Wow. A microbiology lab at Texas A&M accepted purchased raw milk samples from NPR for H5N1 testing, then contacted the milk producers to seek permission. When the producers said, "don't test our milk," the lab not only declined to carry out the tests but also refused to send the samples on to another lab.

In the age of "you do you" public health, it's not just that the government won't/can't guarantee food safety - this public university won't even let you get it tested. That's how much more value they put on agriculture than consumers' rights/transparency/public health.

Dear unmasked radiation oncologist attending:
When you see your patient is wearing a mask, don't ask if the patient would like you to wear one too. Just put it on.

Dear enthusiasts, what would you recommend for these circumstances?

  • ride on pavement but also a dirt road in poor repair
  • leave outdoors NEAR THE OCEAN for days at a time
  • bring a small dog (15 lb) in some kind of carrier or crate - but, I don't need to bring the dog when I'm training for the
  • in winter I'll store the battery in the basement of an unheated house
  • I'm not very handy but I'll have to try and do maintenance myself bc it's quite rural

Hi, do I know anyone -- or do you want to introduce me to anyone -- who might attend the What Works Solutions Summit in in June?
I'm not interested in traveling (to a climate conference ✈️🤯✈️) but if you are, or are nearby, maybe we could collaborate on an abstract about the relative coverage and value of several bibliographic databases relevant to climate and health.

As much as I hated the NPR "let's guilt my husband into indoor dining" article, there's a silver lining to every cloud: it has prompted a lot of responses that I really enjoyed reading.

Somehow I was not expecting to see this recognition of the behind-the-scenes work that goes in to running a digital library in a book published by Harvard Business School

"When they do their jobs well, they do it more or less invisibly. But without them, there would have been no story."

library collections managers, right down to the students making their way through college by shelving and unshelving books, copying and scanning, and delivering files across the campus had no place in his story. When they do their job well, they do it more or less invisibly. But without them, there would have been no story.

Hi , there was a shop that sold adaptive/inclusive design stuff - pens and cutlery that are easier for people to use if they have tremors, etc.
It was near TD Garden, on one of the little streets running NW-SE.
This was maybe 12 years ago.
Is it still there? Where? What's the name? Any other suggestions about browsing/buying stuff for consumers?

Just got a peer review request from a journal I didn't know, and because the topic was right up my alley I went and looked up the journal -- diamond OA, CC-BY, author retains copyright -- all things I want to support. None of which they mentioned in the request.

The radiation oncology staff? No masks.

LMAO at this

** Please note that some fully open access journals require the submitting author to tick a box agreeing to the standard publishing agreement as part of the submission process. In such instances, authors should tick this box to be able to proceed and the values will then be manually overridden by our Author Service team.

Accept the terms that you legally can't accept, and then we promise we'll override the system to apply the right terms later. Trust me :)

Hi people, anyone want to make a support group for weaning ourselves off Chrome and/or Google Search? I want to switch fully to Firefox in terms of browsers and mostly to... well, I don't really know, Duck Duck Go I guess, as a search engine.

But the thought of figuring out Firefox profiles and importing bookmarks and setting up plugins makes me want to go take a nap. And the idea of switching search engines is even worse.

community, I’m tabling at an academic conference next month to spread awareness of both the Public Health Pledge (@phpledge) and precautions as paths toward inclusivity, and I’m trying to think of what would make this table both useful and appealing to passersby. Does anyone have suggestions on what else I can do, in terms of signage, giveaways, activities, etc.?

Thinking about the inclusion message - maybe you can prompt people to reflect on how many of their students

  • are immunocompromised or at higher risk bc of other conditions
  • live with/are in community with people who are at higher risk
  • already have Long COVID
  • can't afford to take time off work if/when they get sick
Sadly I'm not aware of a convenient interactive tool where you could look that up by metro area or institution or anything....

Because of the steep age gradient of COVID risk, I wonder if you could use these authors’ findings to make an argument against precision public health — why engage in baroque, hard to explain calculations when you could just use age as a risk proxy?
