The hardest thing to learn in geology is how to think about deep time. Before studying geology, I never thought about how a billion was really a thousand millions, and what that really meant.

@BlackenedGreen the one thing I have found that KINDA works is toothpaste. No, really, spreading it on the CD and then gently wiping it clean seems to work? It's been a while since I've worried about CD preservation tho

Geography question:

Am I correct in understanding that Pebble beaches (as opposed to fine sand) only occur in colder climates not Caribbean type temperate zones?

I have a very shaky understanding of Earth Geology tbh..

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@Faintdreams My immediate reaction was "this is more geology than geography" because whether a beach is sand or pebble depends on the slope of the land as it meets the sea, which is itself a function of the geological history of the landmass in question, and especially of how long it has been adjacent to the water. So I did a little poking around. I'd be shocked if there were no pebble or cobblestone beaches in equatorial regions, but you are correct in saying that pebble beaches are more common in northern/southern climes. This is because of the previous ice age, which had both land and ocean locked up under glaciers until about twelve thousand years ago. So the coastlines of previously glaciated areas have had less time for erosion to work on the materials at water's edge. Basically, the older the landmass, the flatter it is likely to be. And the flatter the landmass, the more likely it is to have sand deposits along the coast, rather than pebble or cobblestone deposits.

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@Faintdreams I'm still learning about the geology of Jamaica but from what I understand it's a combination of those. 140+ million years ago*, there was no Jamaica because there was no ocean in between Europe/North America and Africa/South America. When that supercontinent started splitting apart, there was plenty of volcanic activity, and the rocks that formed from that are part of Jamaica, but part of it is also pieces of that old continent. So it is mountainous but also pretty old. And, a large part of the land there is made of limestone, which is highly erodible, so that may contribute to the preponderance of sand as well. Just speculating about that last part though.

*edited to correct myself: the supercontinent (Pangaea, which you may have heard of) existed 300 million years ago and its breakup lasted from 150 - 100 million years ago. I initially put that breakup at 50 million years ago, but I was getting the Pangaean breakup confused with the collision of the Caribbean plate with the north American plate which took place about 50 million years ago, and which really put Jamaica into something resembling its current form.

I love geology! Please continue with the questions if you have more.

Jonathan Chait is real mad that leftists aren't taking liberal shit anymore. I got the link from archive.is to avoid giving his BS any extra clicks. It's way longer than it needs to be. This paragraph caught my attention though because it's at least an attempt at clarifying what liberals see as leftism and why they're wrong (which is why they should shut the fuck up, because they have been proven so very fucking wrong, so often, and for so long):

I don’t want to bore you...

lol

by attempting the umpteenth definition of liberalism,

Funny how liberals hate defining liberalism

so I will lay out the distinction as briefly as possible. On economic questions, leftists have an overwhelming bias for state action over markets, while liberals are more selective.

This is incorrect. Leftists differ radically on how much state action over markets is needed. What unites leftists is the belief that we need democracy in economic realms as well as political ones. (I personally don't accept fully authoritarian MLs as leftists, one can debate that, but that's where I stand.) Liberals think it's just fine for us to have democratic politics but for most people to work for institutions that are run as dictatorships.

...On politics, liberals take very seriously notions of individual rights and universally applicable principles, while leftists tend to criticize political liberalism as a recipe for maintaining inequalities of power between the privileged and the oppressed.

Sort of true, but Chait tellingly leaves out the substance of the leftist critique, the reason why they think that political liberalism is a recipe for maintaining inequality, to wit: the lack of democracy in most people's workplaces. If economic power is concentrated while political power is distributed, then inevitably political power will become concentrated as well. Because money is power.

Anyway, Chait hates "Solidarity" the book and he also hates solidarity the concept. Of course he gets paid to represent left-of-center thought at major USA publications. Feel free to discuss your disgust for this type of guy further in replies.

There is no war that can be fought with a trapped civilian population. That is not war. If you destroy all infrastructure, bomb the hospitals, ban all media, disrupt the food supply and corral the remaining population into a tiny area and then go after them. That is not war.

Had a weird day. Accidentally killed my car battery by listening to my audiobook (The Last Days of New Paris, China Miéville). I called AAA. They took ~2.5 hours to respond because the one guy who operates in my area of remote small towns was sick so this guy drove from the next county over. And my phone was dying. He did get there eventually, and I passed the time by alternately walking, dozing off, reading a paper book (Whipping Girl, Julia Serrano), and observing this bunny.

Now I'm eating tamales and watching Discovery with Pixie. Spouse is working late.

Jay-Z's "My First Song" is in 3/4, right?

Jay's flow is in triplets, but when I try to count the beat I feel a 4/4 sometimes and a 3/4 others.

I don't know much about music theory and time signatures, so help me understand this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=colv2Wy2q7E

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@docpop I would characterize it as 6/8. Rather than 1-2-3, 1-2-3, it's 1-2-3-4-5-6, 1-2-3-4-5-6. Speed it up a bit and it's an Irish jig meter. But in places, especially the chorus, he starts acting like it's 2/4 and the groups of 3 within the 6-beat measure are triplets within the 2/4. Like this:

1-2-3 | 4-5-6
1 | 2

If that makes sense?

It's called a hemiola when people superimpose rhythms like that (not to be confused with a hematoma which is when you have a blood bruise). African polyrhythms are famous for this

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@docpop Talking about this reminded me of this Nas song, "Heaven," which is also 6/8 and uses hemiola quite a bit.

@aidan @docpop rap is pretty solidly 4/4 most of the time. Makes it easier to rhyme over the beat I'm sure. Someone has probably done a rap song in 5/4 or 7/8 but I can't think of any off the top of my head

Can economic growth be decoupled from emissions? Yes, for sure, easily even.

Can economic growth be decoupled from environmental degradation in general? Absolutely not. The sheer throughput of materials through the economy, from extraction to waste disposal, must decrease. If we address GHG emissions in isolation from topsoil and biodiversity loss, we will fail to preserve the ecosystems on which we depend for life.

Watching the bear vs man in forest stories & I remember when our 9-year-old son said some boys at recess offered to play with him if 'he hugged & kissed a girl.'

He replied, "No, that's inappropriate," & told us he didn't mind not being able to play with those boys after all. Later his teacher shared she was happy he stood up to peer pressure.

Y'all—it's never too early to teach boys about consent & boundaries. Have the convo. Then again. And again. Boys will be the boys we teach them to be.

When Black people say "White people are dangerous," I don't feel "demeaned" by virtue of being a member of "a certain group." Because I understand that generalizations are just that, general statements that aren't meant to apply in every single possible situation. What's stopping you from developing the requisite emotional intelligence to do the same when you hear negative generalizations about men?

I would still appreciate an answer to the question of why you keep likening men to oppressed groups instead of dominant groups.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon
