Portland's Street Books, a bicycle-powered library for unhoused folks, has a fundraising campaign going through the end of May. Here's a bit of the program's history, courtesy of Literary Hub.

Words like "hero" and "genius" might be too strong, but I did clean out and refill a fountain pen with different-colored ink this morning without getting any ink on my fingers. 🏅

I bought myself a fountain pen. I like the pretty metal. I'll buy ink later this week.

@NullNoMore I bought this same pen a couple of months ago and love it! It's currently inked with a purple from Jacques Herbin, and it looks amazing.

The Oregon Supreme Court upheld the 2022 state constitutional amendment that if you have more than 10 unexcused absences as a state legislator, then you can't run for office again.

To be clear, if an issue is so important to you that boycotting a legislative session for weeks to prevent the required quorum as a stalling tactic is worth it, you may still do that. You just can't run for re-election.

Olympic marathon trials are streaming on Peacock in the U.S. Men are not quite 10 minutes into their race, women will start in about five minutes.

Science has figured out why moths (and other insects) flit around lights: they turn their backs to it and get stuck flying in loops. Watch the video to see how they do it and why. And also a dragonfly being fitted with a tiny sensor. A fun 7-minute coffee break for today.

Had therapy today, and continue to be wicked grateful for my (also neurodivergent) therapist and her insight. A thing to share:

We talked today about my frustration with myself over failing to build new habits - it's a wicked struggle for me.

She talked to me about some anecdotes that autistics in general are bad at building habits when they call them habits.

And great at building routines.

And it's a perfect recasting for me, because I am great at building routines when I call them that, because I treat it in a much more structured way.

Figured I'd share in case it helps someone else too.

@neurovagrant I am in the same routine-revising situation these days. The problem-solving part of creating a new routine or schedule is fun and intriguing for me, but the actual implementation part is ... not so great.

I gambled on a break in the rain for this morning's run ... and lost. It went from zero to raining buckets in 5 seconds. A real test for the new Janji jacket, which did the job! A little wet at the top of the zipper; otherwise dry.

kristenhg,
@kristenhg@mastodon.social avatar

@arratoon Congrats on the longest run! I try not to fall into the "buy more running stuff" trap, but sometimes the right gear makes a huge difference.

kristenhg,
@kristenhg@mastodon.social avatar

@arratoon Starting slowly is key. It takes your body (and your brain!) time to adjust.
And I have a biking jacket that's not so waterproof, but it is all-over reflective, so it's great on dry dark mornings. All hail the crossover jacket.

This morning's effective motivation:

I just bought an expensive raincoat for running. So I guess I have to actually use it now.

[Follow-up: It worked! It actually kept me dry! It's from Janji, if you have holiday money to blow on running gear.]

kristenhg,
@kristenhg@mastodon.social avatar

@arratoon I do not. I had a pair years ago and didn't like them; they were stiff and felt weird to me. So I keep my rainy runs short and take my wet gear off as soon as I get home. I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, so my winter shoes are basically trash by late spring.

I leave for a couple months of respite at the end of the week (huzzah, and phew!) BUT am redlining my pacing trying to get ready.

Ya'll can help me by tooting yer peaceful moments on the tag and @ me - to hopefully draw me into sit the fuck down and just be for 5mins, or to at least build a lovely stream of soothing toots to scroll through when I do sit down.

This is the soul equivalent of putting on a sweater 'cause mom is cold. I need ya'll to take a breath to remind me to. 💖

🚨RING THE ALARM! 🚨The Eugene Weekly, a free print newspaper in Oregon for 40+ years, is a victim of embezzlement. They found out about the theft just before Christmas, and they've already laid off staff.

But EW isn't dead yet! We can help them get over the hump while the crime is being investigated and -- fingers crossed -- they recoup some of the lost money, including retirement funds and bills owed to vendors.

Xmas gift from @Fuzzy_Doug: vintage inkwell with pen rests. I put Colorverse NGC 1850 in it; you can see a bit of the dark blue-green shimmer. Dip pen is from Goulet; I bought it ages ago to use with fun inks.

Closeup of the inkwell, which itself has scrollwork around the top. It's filled with shimmering blue-green ink.
