If you take all the energy buried deep in the earth and under the oceans via photosynthesis and animal metabolism, energy from the sun that was packed away over a span of 500 million years as coal, oil, and gas… and then burn through that fuel in the brief period of about 200 years, what will happen?

Think about it.

We’re igniting all of the stored energy from half a billion years of life activity in only two centuries. That’s a ratio of 2.5 million to one — which means we are using this energy two and half million times faster than it was created and stored.

You know what that is? That’s a BOMB.

@atomicpoet I predict Twitter 3.0 will be called X.com.

When you log in, you'll be greeted with a tab featuring the latest updates from Elon himself! X.com gold members can watch his livestreams, and premium plus members can even submit a question!

The next tab is finances, where you can see your account balance, apply for a loan, insurance policy, credit card, or pension plan. $5 a month is added to your balance each time you renew your monthly subscription.

There's the X.com marketplace tab, where you can buy a range of physical products, content from your favourite creators, and services.

There's tabs for Tesla and SpaceX. If you want to drive your new EV, you'll need to subscribe to the silver tier of X.com first.

There's the "for you" tab, where you can access the content you purchased, as well as get personal recommendations for financial products, products from the marketplace, and exclusive content from Elon and his businesses you might have missed.

Wait, you ask, where do I post a Tweet on this thing? Oh honey, that option only appears if you registered for the creator plus or X.com marketing bundle.

As for the newsfeed? I think it's still accessible. You just need to activate it in settings, then go to the "more services" tab, then tap on the hamburger menu, then switch into developer mode. But to access it, you need to have the developer subscription bundle first.

This random comment has given me my new favourite argument for removing fares from public transit.

I've updated the inner-city bike route map to include modified routes in Port Phillip, updates to St Kilda Rd, and expansion in Footscray.

The map can be saved to your Google Maps app and can be used on the go.

I'll keep updating but may not publicise.

I'm still not talking about Black history. I'm still talking about white US history.

Q: Why do Black kids not do well in school? Is it because their dads are uninvolved and uncaring parents? Bill Cosby and Herschel Walker told me that, and they are good and wise men that we should listen to! It's Black dads' fault! Boo Black men!

A: No. Black kids only do poorly in school in extremely racist countries.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

The typical education experience for a Black boy in the United States, is to have almost all white teachers, mostly women, more than half of whom vote for the most racist candidate on any ballot, and no Black teachers. The teachers have low expectations of you, punish you more than your classmates, and threaten to call the cop who works in the hallway on you at any moment.

I don't know how to explain more clearly, that this is never going to work.

I got into programming for idealistic reasons, try hard to hold on to that feeling. In spite of everything, I still believe computers can be empowering. But you can't delegate their care to a mechanic, certainly not a mechanic with millions of customers. These days I try to create programs that run anywhere, show off their inner workings, are trivial to modify, let you make mistakes and help you understand what went wrong. I call these freewheeling apps.

I'm going to keep sharing this info until it sinks in.

Young voters do not get significantly more or less politically activated. Voter suppression gets more or less effective. Ballot drop boxes and mail-in voting, prevents suppression.

People do not become more conservative as they get older. There is not an increasing difference between white GOP and Dem voters as they get older.

Black people don't live long, and many brown voters aren't born yet.

A group of charts showing the difference in Democrat leading and Republican leaning US citizens by generation and race. The chart show that for white Americans there is no significant difference in republican or democrat leaning by generation.

Hot take: Journalists already have websites and blogs and newspapers and magazines and TV and podcasts and newsletters to report in, is it essential that should cross into social media as a publishing platform when social media is (or should be?) inherently a social space and not a publishing space?
Imagine a public forum of old (pre-internet), you'd expect people to bring articles within that space from outside to discuss, not a big newspaper rack at the centre to direct the conversation right?

Shrigglepuss,
@Shrigglepuss@godforsaken.website avatar

What I'd rather see is an RSS renascence, so social media can happen here in the social realm, and news consumed in the way more appropriate purpose-built space of feed readers. That separation is way healthier and works better for all involved surely?

I’m seeing some posts about the fediverse along the lines of “we welcome our new venture capitalist and Big Tech overlords… what could possibly go wrong?”

What could possibly go wrong? Oh, I don’t know… take a look at the whole damn web. Take a look at email. Take a look at any resource that was originally part of the commons but was then enclosed/captured by corporate interests. Read up on embrace, extend, and extinguish.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

Look, I’m not saying we’ll be able to keep the fediverse from going down the same path. Architecturally, it’s compatible. Mastodon and nearly every other fediverse app is built on a traditional Big Tech stack and inherits its success criteria (and scaling characteristics). But there is value is resisting for as long as we can. Because the fediverse is a stopgap and it would help those of us working on longer-term solutions to have it around for as long as possible.

Manyverse isn't part of the Fediverse, because it works very differently. It's part of the SSB (aka Scuttlebutt) network, and is trying to make SSB more user friendly.

However, the aim of Manyverse/SSB is very similar to the Fediverse: to decentralise social media. You may want to try it out!

Manyverse have just released their first desktop apps, so Manyverse is now available for all major platforms (Linux, Mac, Windows, Android, iOS). You can find out more and download the apps at:

https://www.manyver.se

They also have a Fediverse account at @manyver_se

I've previously posted that Manyverse is serverless, but this isn't quite true. It can be very difficult to reliably connect internet users peer-to-peer, so Manyverse uses special servers called "Rooms" to connect users. However, actual user data is not stored online, so data storage is still serverless. There's a video explaining Room servers at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5p0y_MWwDE

    "i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision.
    "actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux."
    i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux."

    the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!"
    coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long."

    with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death.
