My career goal is to make better computing. Imagining how things can be different and creating real products out of those ideas. I’ve had some success doing this in the past, and as I look ahead into the near future, I’m as excited as I’ve ever been about what’s coming next.

Spending a few days in the province’s rice fields as the crops are harvested one field at a time and made ready for a new season of planting afterwards. With the world seeing a drop in rice production and a rise in prices, rice may soon go the way of hard to find baby formula. Climate change is a bitch.

At the edge of a rice field a machine used for harvesting rice sits idle
Black and white photo details springs and wheels and pulleys around the engine that makes the harvester machine work

I've decided to ACTIVELY decouple from Twitter: Every day, I go back and DM at least 10 of my followers, telling them I've moved here and to follow me here instead (I remove them as followers after that DM). A number of them have set up accounts as a result.

Please do the same if you're more active here than on That's how you can help the

    Boost if you agree.

In 2004, the web was under threat.

Microsoft’s browser held 95% market share, but failed to protect against viruses and spyware. The internet was becoming more centralized and less safe, stifling innovation.

So a movement began: Spread Firefox. People rallied around open-source software that fixed the problems, building and marketing it together.

Today there is another movement to break from centralized social. But it hasn’t had a name - until now.

    @spreadmastodon and

    (1/3)

    davidslifka,

I hope that @spreadmastodon and spreadmastodon.org will serve a few purposes:

    1. Remind everyone spreading Mastodon that they are serving a noble cause

    2. Be an easy place to send people who want to learn about or join Mastodon

    3. Help people enjoy Mastodon more by finding new follows (see our new tool, follows.spreadmastodon.org)

But most important of all... (2/3)

Amazon Prime Video has introduced a new feature to make its audio more intelligible. It's intended as an accessibility feature for people who are hard of hearing, but also addresses a common complaint from audiences who find dialogue too quiet. Here's a look at why so many people have issues with TV audio these days (it's a similar reason to why so many shows appear too dark for viewers — remember that "Game of Thrones" episode?).

Wrote a short post about Elon suspending @dell under the same policy that old Twitter used to suspend NY Post, and which Elon and his friends had argued was unacceptable. https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/19/twitter-suspends-reporter-dell-cameron-for-reporting-on-twitter-hack-using-same-policy-old-twitter-used-to-block-ny-post-hunter-biden-story/

    chadloder,

@mmasnick @SarahOestreich @dell It is not safe for journalists to rely on Twitter. It is also MUCH harder to build a Mastodon following after your Twitter account is suspended.

A few weeks ago there was a discussion about the need for a instance dedicated to NGOs, nonprofits, and folks in the human rights space.

So I got to work with @happy and @gillo and created https://mastodon.ngo! We're admin'ing this instance together and we'll be maintaining it for the long term.

If you or your organization or someone you know is interested in creating an account, let me know. You can also request an account here: https://mastodon.ngo/about

It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). I propose we talk about CO₂ removal () like a time machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:

Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million trees take us?

A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of CO₂ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.
