@panton41@mastodon.social

I hold a B.Sc. in Journalism Informatics with minors in Writing and Journalism from Indiana University. I've mostly used my education to write better quality smut that I sell on Kindle as Hara Surya.

Single adopted mother of a very strange teenage daughter.

Approach with caution. I am the one you warned me of. It is entirely possible that I am a figment of my own, or some else's, imagination. Do not taunt Happy Fun Sarra.

It’s been 17 years since Mitch McConnell started filibustering everything and like 15 or 16 years since political reporters began treating that as totally normal and writing that routine legislation did or didn’t have the 60 votes necessary to pass.

panton41,

@JoshuaHolland If they want to filibuster, then they need to get up there and talk, non-stop, for as long as they can. This whole "we filibuster" then they go home for the weekend need to stop.

@gamingonlinux I'd really love the ability to tell it to pause charging the battery at 80% to preserve its life. There's a Steam Deck mod program that can do it, but it causes the system to constantly crash and reboot.

And, I could do basic car maintenance 20 years ago when cars were simpler, but these days it takes 30 minutes just to get to the point where you can begin changing your spark plugs because of so much crap piled on top of the cylinder head cover.

There has been a lot of talk about the problems with so-called "AI" but one I don't feel gets enough attention is that "AI" products are surveillance products. "AI" is inevitably run in a cloud service, and in order for the AI to know what to generate some amount of the context within your application— usually it's not clear to the user what context, or how much— has to get sent to the cloud. The more of my local app state that gets transmitted over the Internet, the less comfortable I am.

panton41,

@mcc I use latent diffusion image software that runs completely locally. I won't touch LLMs until I can do the same (which isn't far off).

Edwin Hubble announced in 1925 that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were in fact separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell.

The Universe was far larger than what many astronomers had allowed themselves to imagine. It was more than just our little island of stars.

Hubble built on observations by Vesto Slipher, collaborated with Milton Humason, and relied on Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s Cepheid variable work to reach this conclusion.

panton41,

@RickiTarr @SimonCHulse @RealJournalism Honestly, I think it's telling that in the Pew Religiosity Survey that 24% of respondents were "No strong religious belief" but only 3% (of the overall total) called themselves "Atheist." I can't help but think some of the more vocal and militant Atheists give the whole concept a bad name.

I was trying to read "The God Delusion" a few years ago and Richard Dawkins just came across as an asshole who likes the smell of his own farts.

Nativity-style statuettes found at Pompeii said to suggest pagan ritual

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/24/nativity-style-statuettes-found-at-pompeii-suggest-pagan-ritual-experts-say

Totally shocked and baffled that Xtianity (which is basically iron-age Pokemon for gods) could have "borrowed" the nativity scene tradition from the cult of Cybele

panton41,

@cstross I was researching Zoroastrianism for a novel and read about the birth and life of Zarathustra.

He was born in a barn, angels announced his birth to shepherds, animals bowed to him, he was a farmer until he started preaching at 30 and by 33 he'd caught the ear of a king and converted him.

Keep in mind, Zoroastrianism might have been more than a thousand years old at the time Jesus was born, and the story was well known in the Levant.

Sure.

If you just browse, watch Netflix, shop, net banking, etc, Linux distributions like Mint or Ubuntu could save you money. It is an environment-friendly option.

In the late 80s ‘concern’ about childhood obesity caused complaints about fast food advertisements directed at children. Happy Meals if ordered without modifications contained more calories than was recommended for a meal for a child under 12. This is why Wendy’s McDonalds and other have “apple slices” — if you replace the fries in a kids meal with apples the meal comes just under the limit. The funny thing is i love fast food apple slices they are my guilty pleasure. 1/

I’m old enough to remember when smoking (and smoke) was everywhere, and the idea that smokers might ever be asked or made to stop was seen as absurd. Many kids (including me) got horrible bronchitis every single year and had other sorts of breathing problems all the time. Many parents (and other adults) died early.
