Did we manage get the IIgs to boot over the network? What the what! How far will it actually go?

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

Ohmyglobness! It full-on works! IIgs without any sort of floppy or hard drive attached, running over the network :D

This is using a2server from https://appleii.ivanx.com
It wouldn't install properly from the site's ancient instructions, but grabbing the disk image here did the trick: https://archive.org/details/a-2-server-rtg-152-raspi-2-3-gp

A bit blurry due to using a 2x converter on a very soft 500mm on a cheap tripod with very bad skill, but still very happy with how it came out.

A few years ago, a Reddit user asked for help in finding a “BOTTOM trackball,” which is an anecdote perfect for explaining how completely the optical mouse defeated the mechanical one.

Here’s how it happened: https://tedium.co/2024/05/19/optical-mouse-history-evolution/

@ernie Nice piece. I just pulled from my archive a raw clip of Doug Engelbart explaining how the wheels worked on the first mouse, from when I interviewed him in 2009.

For the latest issue of Make Magazine, I wrote a feature article about ! The online version of the article is now up. Come read about my beginnings as a teenage fan, how I was introduced to the GUS and how I decided to make an emulator for it so many years later. https://makezine.com/article/technology/computers-mobile/democratizing-the-demoscene-picogus-brings-the-90s-tracker-sound-to-the-masses/

A @paulrickards plotter original finally on display, along with three tools that my great-grandfather (and his father) made.

These make me think about the intersection of coding, computational art, and home-built tools.

More Paul Rickards plots in frames. The interaction with the glass reflection is quite nice, too.

Do you have a Panasonic NeoFile business card reader & PDA??

Do you also have the optional serial cable and NeoLink software? 💾

I’d love to play around with mine but the software isn’t archived and the serial port seems unique. 😫

Please share to help me find it! 🤞

Finally found some time to work on my – the clone CPU board seems to work in my original 2/10. However, the Lisa complains about I/O error 51 (parallel ports VIA) or I/O error 1 (undef'd) or hangs with the hourglass cursor. With the clone CPU, I cannot power down using the power button, this works with the original CPU. The floppy needs fixing and my clone parport board seems to have a problem (static on screen when it's inserted, see video) – lots of work ahead!

Unhappy Lisa showing I/O error 51
This time, the Lisa hangs at startup displaying the hourglass cursor

What would you consider as the most recognizable bitmap fonts in tech history?

    I’m imagining stuff like:

    • the arcade/Atari font
    • Chicago (Mac, then iPod)
    • VCR/video equipment fonts
    • Minecraft font
    • IBM PC fonts (MDA, VGA, stuff like that)
    • perhaps System font from Windows 3.x
    • Commodore 64, just because of the sheer popularity of the machine

    What am I missing?

    A long overdue confession:

The upper/lowercase font in the Hi-Res Character Generator routine for the Apple II (Contributed Software No. 3) came from the character generator chip of a Commodore PET, which was just a 2716-format ROM. The Apple II had an empty $D000-$D7FF socket that was pin-compatible. I pulled the chip from the PET, plugged it into the Apple II, wrote it to a disk file, and voila.
