When we first moved here, 45 made it impossible for foreign spouses to work. So my wife went back to school and today, she’s graduating with her Bachelors in Psychology. Next stop: grad school! (Thankful for California’s excellent public universities system, and resident tuition!)

Sabrena felt she got an excellent education at SF State, and is looking forward to start the clinical psychology masters program to be your friendly multilingual culturally relevant therapist in a few years

I'm at an odd place with my personal website. Before Dec. 2023, it was a "professional portfolio" for my compositions. Now that I'm interested in the IndieWeb community, I want to make something more personal. I don't think I want to make two sites, but I do still need a portfolio for my composition work.

I just read @maggie's post on "digital gardens" and I really like that idea. (1/n)

@alabut ooh I love this! When I get around to releasing a record, I might do this. I did some ASCII bubble letters on this instruction .txt file that comes with the performance materials for this recent piece: https://applytriangle.bandcamp.com/track/if-this-reaches-you

My hobby (film development and printing) is really only possible because of the density of burned out hardware and software engineers with time and money, and a deeply autistic interest in making things work (just spoke to the people who set up my community darkroom. They bought out gear from labs which closed, and fixed it up.. this doesn’t really exist anywhere else)

I have a color darkoom I can use! (They rebuilt some color processors, it was pretty gnarly)

@skinnylatte as an autistic person I really love when people have these kinds of intense interests in things

I'm having a real hard time seeing how, if he managed to get his hands on TikTok, he would transform it into the "good internet". Without losing all the users.

Anybody else see what he apparently sees?

@J12t his most recent idea for a "better Internet" was blockchain nonsense, so I don't see him actually doing anything good with it

Hi everyone! I'm a composer & audio developer. I also like fountain pens, mechanical keyboards, software-defined radio, leftist politics & learning new things.

My music tends toward the glitchy, noisy, microtonal side of things, and I like to use Max/MSP and incorporate audio samples from my software-defined radio hobby. You can find my music at my site, SoundCloud & YouTube:

I have a new track out today! https://applytriangle.bandcamp.com/track/if-this-reaches-you

It's a glitchy, experimental trio for flute, clarinet, and MIDI keyboard/Max. There are Morse code and other ham radio samples, electric piano, and bowed cardboard box, and it's surprisingly groovy.

The full album has 11 different composers, and you can find it here: https://applytriangle.bandcamp.com/album/oxalis-triangularis-vol-2

Unsurprising, but good to have explicitly laid out:

"The overall effect of looking at my Substack dashboard is 'wow, Substack is really getting me an audience! If I leave Substack, half of my subscription channel will dry up.' It’s clear that this is the impression other writers, the media, and investors are getting as well, because they praise Substack about it all the time."

I already don't like Substack and massively prefer reading things on the writer's own website, and this kind of manipulation to keep people there just confirms my dislike

I appreciate that Molly White (for example) self-hosts her newsletter: https://www.citationneeded.news/

I've been feeling exactly like this comic, but I got a cheap retro alarm clock and started keeping my phone in the living room at night. It's really nice

A chamber orchestra composition I recently put on PeerTube! One of the percussionists is placing a contact mic on a large speaker to make flabby feedback; the pianist is using a contact mic/transducer against the piano strings; and there's lots of microtonal/noise sounds from the rest of the ensemble.

I did a write up of setting up Webmentions on my site! I had mentioned it earlier, but there was one stumbling block that took me longer to figure out.

Webmentions let me get notified when people share my posts, respond to my comments on other sites, etc., and lets me use my site for a lot of the kinds of interactions I'd otherwise have to do on social media.
