This guy made a tool that beeps every time a website sends data about you to Google. The beeps blur into a continuous buzz: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/tracker-beeper/

I use Privacy Badger (https://privacybadger.org/, blocks trackers), uBlock Origin (https://ublockorigin.com/, adblocker), Firefox, and the SearXNG search engine (https://searxng.ca/ or find instances at https://searx.space/), but it's annoying I have to.

A video of navigating various popular news sites (Daily Mail, nu.nl, telegraaf.nl) in Chrome. A terminal is visible in the background, running a program that beeps ever time the site reports back to Google.

Music platform @mirlo is raising funds to keep running! They let listeners buy directly from musicians, with only 7% going to the platform. They're owned by a worker co-op and open-source too

I really appreciate what they're doing, especially with the instability at Bandcamp

Hi everyone! I'm a composer & audio developer. I also like fountain pens, mechanical keyboards, software-defined radio, leftist politics & learning new things.

My music tends toward the glitchy, noisy, microtonal side of things, and I like to use Max/MSP and incorporate audio samples from my software-defined radio hobby. You can find my music at my site, SoundCloud & YouTube:

Here's one of my compositions I'm particularly proud of. It's for trumpet, trombone, percussion, and MIDI keyboard. There are cheesy Yamaha DX7 synth sounds, microtonal brass, and glitchy, distorted noise.

I got a new fountain pen, and it has the trans flag colors! It's a Hongdian N9 with a "long blade" or architect nib. The nib took me a bit to get used to, but I find it gives particularly nice shading to my inks, and has a wet flow, which I appreciate.

Here I'm using Sailor Studio 024 ink and Cosmo Air Snow paper.

New blog post! I talk about making this "broken radio" sound I posted about a few weeks ago: https://hachyderm.io/@reillypascal/112242684024114281

The sound is pretty involved, so this week I'm talking about just the glitchy looper part. I will make a part 2 soon, to talk about combining the looper with radio noises.

Here's my current collection of fountain pen inks. I've been collecting them for about a year (and some of them were presents from my partner and family). They make me happy.

Demo of some sounds from a piece I'm working on

The [fftz.ether~] object is comparing two sounds bin-by-bin and picking the bin that's quieter. One sound is microtonal (20-EDO) synth chords, and the other is a bunch of chopped snips of a noisy, lofi piano loop.

I also have snippets of FM radio static frequency-modulating the resulting sound, which I find sounds convincingly like the sounds are on a radio.

Them’s fighting words.

Let’s say I fiddle with some knobs on my Eurorack setup (that’s a music synthesizer if you don’t know), and decide to upload it in the background of a video. Am I now making 'altered content?'"

I just got a really pretty new fountain pen! It's a Hongdian N7 "Peacock" with a medium nib and piston filler.

Notebook is Tomoe River 68gsm from Goulet, and the ink is Robert Oster Sydney Lavender.

I did a write up of setting up Webmentions on my site! I had mentioned it earlier, but there was one stumbling block that took me longer to figure out.

Webmentions let me get notified when people share my posts, respond to my comments on other sites, etc., and lets me use my site for a lot of the kinds of interactions I'd otherwise have to do on social media.

Here's the latest post from my blog! I discuss making "composite" sounds using FFT spectra for part of a current composition project.

My site is all hand-written, but I found that drafting as Markdown in my Joplin notebook, and then converting to HTML in the terminal makes me much more inspired to write.

@axwax I have a recent release! This track is for clarinet, flute, and MIDI keyboard w/ Max/MSP. There are strange woodwind noises and multiphonics, ham radio samples & retro electric piano, among other things, and it sounds glitchy and trippy. It's on a compilation w/ 11 other composers, and that's great to check out as well!

"The overall effect of looking at my Substack dashboard is 'wow, Substack is really getting me an audience! If I leave Substack, half of my subscription channel will dry up.' It’s clear that this is the impression other writers, the media, and investors are getting as well, because they praise Substack about it all the time."

I already don't like Substack and massively prefer reading things on the writer's own website, and this kind of manipulation to keep people there just confirms my dislike

I appreciate that Molly White (for example) self-hosts her newsletter: https://www.citationneeded.news/
