It seems that is getting some traction, so it's good to summarize the facts:

  • it's centralized (99% of users on one instance),
  • it has insufficient moderation,
  • it's not easily publicly browsable,
  • it has terrible terms of service (you grant them broad rights to all your content).

The only thing that makes it different from X in principle is that it's not run by a mad man (yet)... Ah, I forgot it's Jack Dorsey's project, nevermind.

The plugin for is an absolute game changer when it comes to reader engagement. I published a post yesterday and it already has 8 comments and 7 of them are from . The total number of comments is actually much higher, the plugin doesn't handle reactions to comments yet.
Meanwhile the blogpost has received 4 views from and 2 from .

I keep hearing that is not likely to replace . To that I say: so what?
I've been contributing to the desktop for the last 15 years not because it's likely to replace , but because providing people with free desktop is the right thing to do.
I use and support Mastodon not because it's likely to replace Twitter, but because it's a social network done right.

The just-released 120 for opens up to add-ons. There are already 50 of them available and the number should grow quickly as more add-ons get verified.
I've installed to get rid of cookie pop-ups. What a relief.
If you are not using Firefox on Android, I highly recommend giving it a try. It's been my daily driver for years and it's gotten really good and no other relevant mobile has such a wide variety of add-ons available AFAIK.

Now I can follow high-volume accounts such as reporting from Ukraine and not have my home feed flooded with it. 👍

Prices on are from different times. Cakes for €0.4, coffee for free, beer for €0.7...
I remember an interview with the founder and CEO where he was asked why they sell food and beverages on trains so cheap. And his answer was: we're in the business of selling tickets, not in the business of catering, we don't intend to make money on it.

My mother-in-law just called me and asked if she should invest in the "new Bitcoin". She saw a video on FB where a famous Czech actor praised it on a talk show. Clearly a deepfake scam.

And she would definitely do it if she didn't have me. Some time ago I defended ad blockers as tools of online security and this is a real-life example that it's really the case.

Until Google, Meta and others get their act together, their ads should be blocked.

I keep reading that #GoogleSearch changes are killing small sites. They are indeed.
Last year I figured that the only way to keep my blog somewhat relevant was to strengthen the direct commucation with readers. I bet on #RSS and #ActivityPub.
Year over year, Google traffic share went down from 46% to 25% and direct traffic share went up from 37% to 54%. And the total traffic is up!

is a great educational tool for kids. Our 4 year old daughter is used to touch screens and I just couldn't find a way to teach her how to use the mouse. Gcompris managed to do it in 30 minutes.
She is also learning letters, basic math, etc. in the process.

Paper Plane (formerly Telegrand) is a really nice #Telegram client. It still misses a lot of features of the official client, but if you're fine with that, it gives you really great native experience on #Linux. And it works great on phones, too!

You can find it in the beta channel on #Flathub.

It's safe to say now that isn't going to make a revolution. User growth has basically stopped at 5 million (less than 1/2 of what has), the number of active users is also lower and declining.

The key difference is that has proven to be fine in this "small" mode while Bluesky is VC funded (hence the "go big or go home" approach). Let's see what the investors will do once they realize it's not even remotely a Twitter killer.

offers as a service (called Storage Share) with a 1TB of storage for only €5.11/month. That's a really nice price for a privacy-respecting, Europe-based personal .
They also offer a 1TB of just storage for 3.89/month in case you already have an instance of Nextcloud and want to expand its storage capacity.

When our 4-year-old daughter was told that Little Jesus (our equivalent of Santa) was always watching her and deciding whether to bring her presents under the tree, she replied that it wasn't OK to be watched all the time and that she didn't let anyone do that.

I never thought of it that way as a child. A child of the GDPR age.

@honzajavorek Zrovna mám o tom rozepsaný dlooouhý článek na blog. :)
