Twitter has a been a hotbed for fascism pretty much the whole time. I was surveilled on there and then dogpiled by people calling me racial slurs and the like in like 2014. I'm one of many.

Tbh it's telling that some people only think it's fascist now. It's telling me those folks didn't engage with black folks in any meaningful way there and probably won't here either.

Like I don't see how you can get mad at folks for staying on there when you only just realized now that it's obvious. Black Twitter is a historically significant digital cultural space that took years of labor in a hostile environment to build, like many cultural touchstones created by black ppl worldwide.

The kind of diaspora discourse that happened there? The connections made? It's easy to see why people are hard pressed to give that up if you've actually been paying attention.

Redoing my :)

I'm Andrea, PhD student in at UT Austin. Research interests include and . Right now doing a project on Black midwifery and reproductive justice.

Before UT, I taught Spanish for five years. Sometimes, I make , and I would love to be a curator one day.

I am a queer black femme and I prioritize the voices of queer black and indigenous folks. Happy to be here!

Condescension and white/male hostility get muted in these parts.

Saw this meme making the rounds on fb, wanted to share it here along with my commentary. (Spoiler alert: It's a rant about misogyny)

Almost every woman I know has a story about a man making them uncomfortable through inappropriate sexual advances.

We have seen news stories of men harassing, assaulting, and even murdering women because they did not accept their romantic or sexual gestures of flirting/trying to get their number, et cetera.

Yet another black man has been needlessly killed by police. Say his name: Steve Perkins

A very funny gag here is many of the white people who spout social justice rhetoric yet only engage with BIPOC folks to scold or whitesplain them. Using the rhetoric makes them seem safe. At first.

Anyway, I'm ignoring them and working on nurturing mutually beneficial engagement with other folks of color, especially black, indigenous, queer and/or trans folks.

This is actually a huge adjustment for me because from the beginning here on Mastadon I've been the defensive against whiteness.

I have been reading about the 500 refugees who drowned. It looks like the Greek coast guard surveilled the ship for over a dozen hours and yet did not initiate rescue efforts until it was too late to save most of the passengers. There are 104 survivors, and 78 bodies have been recovered. And the EU (and the US and UK) still doesn't have a consistent and safe way to take in refugees despite these countries having contributed to the reasons refugees are needing refuge in the first place.

There should be a green book for Black students looking at US colleges and universities.

But for now I'll tell anyone Black considering to STAY FAR THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE IN KNOXVILLE.

It was a very racist climate when I attended, and it hasn't improved in the decade and change since my freshman year there. I am still recovering from some of the things that happened to me, years after graduation.

Unless you have a deep network of people there already, AVOID.

Are there any threads? Idk I'm starting (another) one. Black Americans put y'all venmo/cashapp/etc in a comment if you're comfortable.

White folks--ESPECIALLY if you're getting today off work as a paid holiday, throw your money at us. We deserve.

Please boost :)

One thing that is worth thinking deeply about is how for black, indigenous, and queer/trans folks, america (hell, both north and south) has always been a fascist hellscape.

As someone who is from the mid south and currently resides in the deep south (I have failed you, Ida Wells! 🥲), a video with black people defending each other from and fighting back against white supremacist violence was healing.

I'm so used to seeing, reading, and hearing about us getting harmed with no recourse. This was heartening. Also the shit was mad funny once the calvary arrived.

The discourse on social media following Tina Turner's death can be read as a case study in misogynoir (a term coined by Trudy and Moya Bailey)

She specifically stated a number of times that the Ike Turner jokes troubled her and yet they were ongoing during her lifetime and I have seen an increase since she passed away. I do not think these jokes would have persisted were Tina Turner not a Black woman.

In today's "I hate it here!" news:

So if you're like me and were wondering why Houston education leaders aren't calling for a teacher strike amid Texas's carceral white supremacist takeover of Houston ISD it's because Texas law prohibits public employees to participate in "organized work stoppage." Basically, striking is illegal for them. Teachers would risk losing their jobs, licenses, and access to retirement. A lot of them have simply left the district.

Catching up on one of my fave podcasts, and dude basically said "it's 2023 and we still don't have teleportation. Maybe we would have it if we weren't obsessed with policing women's clothes and bodies" and I have been thinking about this for almost 24 straight hours.

What could humans do if we weren't bogged down by the troubling obsession with mistreating people because of race, gender, sexuality, ability, nation, religion, etc?

Probably a lot. But here, we got "artificial intelligence" 🥲

Obviously we know the guy who took out a full-page newspaper ad advocating for the execution of 5 black men would be worse than Biden.

White democrats on here, consider doing something more useful than attempting to lecture black and brown people online by telling them things they already know.

Thinking about Darryl George today, whose expression through his locked hairstyles--which are always neat and well done from the pictures I've seen--is being criminalized in the state of Texas. This is a young black man possibly being sent to an alternative school for his hairstyle.

There is a white lawyer in Austin with the most raggedy white "dreads" I've ever seen. His face is on billboards and buses.

people that tell marginalized folks that they "just have to wait for the bigots to die off"

  1. deem themselves worthy of deciding when someone else's dignity ought to be recognized (ps am I really supposed to be comforted by maybe seeing equity at 100, if then?)

  2. presume to know more than marginalized person about the nature of oppressive structures

  3. use this as a response instead of doing the bare minimum work of addressing bigotry in their own lives
