You are going to make love to a Cereal Mascot, who do you choose?

I'm going Snap, Crackle, & Pop.

wilpercy,

@RickiTarr No one mentioned Ready Brek? There’s no mascot but any cereal which leaves you glowing is worth considering.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr I live in Mito, Ibaraki. We are 130 kms NE of Tokyo. This region is famously flat but mountains where you can hike and ski are 2-3 hours away. Mito has a lake and 300 hectares park (Kairakuen) which is the second largest urban park after Central Park. Good galleries, concert halls, good food. It’s peaceful. This beach is a 30 minute drive.
Cons: earthquakes.

Awww this takes me back! What has been the most important in your life?

wilpercy,
@wilpercy@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr for me it is undoubtedly digital photography. The freedom to take lots of photographs as my daughters grew up, to share them with distant relatives and latterly to copy old (1910 ~) albums and ‘rescue’ damaged images. This transformed my interest in family history and inspired conversations with elderly relatives about their childhood memories. Oral history, restored photos, Wikipedia and Google Earth. What a combination!

Okay, a little mystery also for today. After the Toxic Club, my
brother and I got a strawberry limeade at a little drive inn, and drove around this Conservation Area, but then we start seeing this fence with these signs, it's like 8 foot tall with lots of the fence totally blacked out, and these signs placed on them that say:

Saline Valley Ranch, No Hunting, No Trespassing

This fence went for miles, and miles had to be incredibly pricey to put in, it reminded me of the fence they'd have at a minimum security prison, but we didn't see cows, horses, crops, nothing but woods and hills and miles and miles of giant fence.

We try to find information about what it is, but there's basically nothing. My husband looks it up on Google Earth, and finds Little Saline Ranch, and I look it up, and it says permanently closed, and even less information is available about that. Google Earth shows lots of wooded land, a lake, and a few open fields, but we couldn't see any buildings or animals, nothing like that.

So, looking up that I find this article about mysterious happenings in the area:

https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2018/10/31/hunting-ghosts-miller-county-other/9408986007

It mentions several people seeing a Bigfoot type cryptid in the area, so obviously the fence is to keep it in. My other guesses involve a government blacksite, as it isn't too far from and airforce base, or a doomsday cult, what do you all think?

@RickiTarr cracked me up! She touts a single Swiss Army Spurtle in part because it will replace a draw-full of kitchen implements and assorted clutter. She then goes on to throw in a mini Spurtle, Spurtle tongs and lawn mower-Spurtle in the kind of bargain offer which will probably break the same drawer.

Truly and honestly, I have a great time here, because you all make it great. You boost, you reply, you encourage, and inspire! It is crazy to me that I get to talk to people from all over the world every day. I get to be friends with people I'll probably never actually get to physically meet. I was born into a pre-internet world, and this still feels a little like a miracle to me.

@RickiTarr interesting about how memory for faces declines after 30. It reminded me of reading about who are used by the police to identify face in crowds. You can test your own powers of memory and recognition here. It takes five minutes.
