Any thoughts on what to do with an old tablet?

It is the original (?) Nexus 7. I've resurrected it with 15 - but it runs slow as molasses uphill. Scrolling on the web is pretty stuttery.

Anything cool you've seen done with obsolete tech like this?

@Edent I ran a homeassistant server on a nexus 9 for almost a year and it doubled as a control dashboard

@mrpresidenttom @Edent Curious how fast it was compared to say a @Raspberry_Pi ?

mrpresidenttom,
@mrpresidenttom@mastodon.social avatar

@santiago @Edent @Raspberry_Pi just from my experience with it, I didn't run any tests or anything. But I would guess it was slower than the pi 3, with significant drawbacks being the lack of storage options and the inability to use any usb devices. Also homeassistant wasn't able to run in supervisor mode

At the time though, the pi was going through a shortage and so it was much more economical, but completely not worth it tbh

@mrpresidenttom @Edent @Raspberry_Pi I wouldn’t try it as I find my Home Assistant runs a bit slow even on RPI 4 ( I may suffer from Home Automation compulsion)

@santiago @Edent @Raspberry_Pi
Yeah, I definitely wouldn't recommend it. This was early on in my usage of homeassistant and I had like 4 light bulbs and a couple switches

If it has unattended NTP clock sync working, turn it into a Broadcast Studio Clock:

@Edent Moonlight gaming client.

agf102,

@Edent a home assistant dashboard?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@agf102 the browser is, sadly, far too slow for that.

@Edent I'm planning to instal @postmarketOS on mine, and let it as a @homeassistant dashboard :)

@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent One thing you can do to help a bit is to root it (on old versions like that you install a su binary via TWRP) and put Greenify on there. Any apps that don't need to be running all the time (eg things you don't need notifications/etc from) should be "greenified" so they don't stay running, taking up RAM. Your biggest issue on this one is probably going to be the RAM in fact, so you may want to see if it's possible to setup some zRAM (I think I remember it being possible.)

@Edent I have one of those lying around too. It was unimpressive even when new, so it's no surprise it performs terribly now. Annoyingly, the screen has too low resolution to make a decent e-book reader.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@mansr I'm running https://koreader.rocks on it - seems perfectly readable. Although not as nice as eInk, obvs.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@Edent It's usable, but text is a little too jagged for my liking. The second generation N7 was much better.

@Edent let it tun 24/7 as a snowflake server.

@Edent I just got mine out and the battery is swelling. I’m not sure I’d trust any of them with original batteries now.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@jackbrewster
Luckily the battery is pretty easy to replace. I unplugged mine in order to get it charging again. A bit warm, but not fizzy.

@Edent Some single page dashboard for home? Weather, todo list for the day, transport disruption information...

@Edent I believe the 2012 version of the Nexus 7 (codenamed grouper/tilapia) had problematic storage (eMMC) chips which will run slow over time, not much to do about it.

The 2013-version of the Nexus 7 (codenamed razor) had this fixed and it unaffected by this.

IIRC the support for TRIM and proper all-flash reset was introduced with that 2013 version and Android 4.3 which eliminated that slowness over time.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@gertvdijk
Yup, it is a Grouper. Going to try to find a way to stop it being ewaste.

@Edent I have one too! Here's a conversation I had about it with a friend:

D:
which nexus 7 is it?

S:
Ummm good question. It has wi-fi and sim slot. 2012 maybe?

D:
'does it have a camera on the back' seems to be the operative question

S:
no camera

D:
in short, it's a goner

the flash used in the 2011 nexus 7 doesnt support TRIM

so it just degrades over time

S:
Sad

D:
it is, but it's also gonna run pretty horribly even without the flash issues

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@Edent

S:
Interestingly the interface and all OS stuff is slow af, but the game app for the boys is pretty nippy still

D:
well, indeed

anything running out of RAM is gonna be fine

it's just getting to that point that sucks

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw
Yeah, looks to be a common complaint.

@Edent thought I'd share the specifics of what was said in case it was useful to you :)

@Edent @LevelUp Maybe Postmarket os is better ? https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Google_Nexus_7_2012_(asus-grouper)

Put web+ssh server and maybe show some stats ?

moogal,
@moogal@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent I've got one of those hanging around too - I pretty much entirely use it as a way to watch TV shows/films on the train with VLC, as similar to yours it's far too slow to do anything particularly useful.

@Edent my Nexus 7 2012 spent a few years as a hacked up Carplay reciever and is now enjoying retirement as a Harmony remote and occasional Amiibo cloner.

Ooh, I hadn't thought of adding my remote control apps to it. Good plan.

urbantrout,

@Edent just had the same "problem" with my Nexus 7 v2. Installed latest lineageOS and now use it as a baby monitor (combined with raspberry pi + motion eye + infrared camera)

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@urbantrout
First I shall need to procure a baby!

alistairmacdonald,

@Edent I have found that not installing Google Play Services speeds things up a lot, but yes that can be very limiting. My 1st gen is used for a ZX Spectrum emulator with an OTG connector to connect a real keyboard. I have used older devices as status displays with a custom Android app. I also use them as prompt devices instead of cards when running workshops. So, yes, if you can cope with Android Studio the world is your oyster.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@alistairmacdonald
Even without Google is is a dog.
But I'll look at emulators. Good plan, ta.

alistairmacdonald,

@Edent It may or may not be relevant, but July's build for flox (the repartitioned 2013 Nexus 7) appears to have been somewhat slow and unstable. A upgrade to this months build serms to fix it. I wonder if it was something like that that was giving you bad results.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@alistairmacdonald
I'll give it a go, ta!

davebriggs,

@Edent no idea. But just want to say - I LOVED the Nexus 7

joshaspinall,

@Edent it isn’t currently a supported target, but check out https://postmarketos.org/. The documentation is good and support is available. I have one too I haven’t got around to trying!

Edent,

Let me know if you get it running.

joshaspinall,

@Edent consider me motivated! Shall attempt a build later today.

joshaspinall,

@Edent Success!
