Just stumbled across this December 2010 edition of Chess Life (which I'd never seen before).
It has a review by two-time US Women's Champion Jennifer Shahade of the chess fiction anthology MASTERS OF TECHNIQUE to which I contributed. She has some very nice things to say!
Check this interview with her in Vanity Fair about the TV series QUEEN'S GAMBIT:
Vera Menchik, 1st Women World Champion, was born #onthisday in 1906.
Strong players who lost to her were said to be "members" of a "club". Notable members are Euwe, Reshevsky and Colle, while among "candidates" (who drew) there are Najdorf and her trainer Maroczy.
Random thought/ feature request.. I wish chess.com had an option where an AI could play out a game when a irl opponent resigns. Sometimes it would be cool to see how and endgame might play out. #chess
Well, I can't say I'm surprised, but nonetheless its notable that #chess is now embroiled in a discussion of #gender discrimination & #trolling... that would not seem unusual;
this is a rhetorical Q.; I have a pretty good idea about [#patriarchy, the threat any woman might pose to (insecure) men & why actually ever more shrill #toxicmasculinity is a sign of a world changing, not the reinforcement of an existing power structure....]
This is certainly not a new discussion in the chess world. It comes to light in MSM every so often, but my experience is that little is changing to make chess generally more inclusive.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but in #chess, if a puzzle says the opposing king must “fall” in two moves, that means you can make up to two moves to checkmate the opposing king—not that you have two attempts to checkmate them. Right?
@itsjoshbruce It appeared to be counting attempts to solve, but really, I had 3 attempts, and it reset the board after each incorrect move. I assumed I would get to try 2 moves at a time.
11 first-time contributors helped write code for Lichess in January! 🛠️
See what they and others worked on in this month's changelog: https://lichess.org/changelog
@lichess Would sincerely love to get a list view back for broadcasts — the grid makes it much more difficult to quickly scan the page for a specific tournament.
"In one famous game Blackburne astonished those present by announcing mate in 16 moves - surely the longest announcement of mate in the entire history of blindfold chess."
(from: "Blindfold Chess" by Eliot Hearst and John Knott)
