The power to Silence accounts, or whole domains of them, is as necessary as the power to Unfollow or Unsubscribe. They're all ways we curate our own social media experiences, avoiding digital pollution like spam, flooding, angry rants, dogpiles, etc.

That said, probably contentious ...

The power to Block is the ability to libel people publicly, but where they can't see it (unless someone passes it on to them), so they can't correct mis/disinformation. I don't think it's socially wise for fediverse software or protocols to offer tools like this.

Here's why...

Imagine a publicly-circulated newspaper that can stop a minority from reading it. Now imagine it's a newspaper run by fundamentalists; white supremacists defending mass shootings or islamists pushing violent jihad or fatwa. They can accuse leaders who oppose them of being pedophiles. If those leaders are part of the minority who can't see the newspaper, they can't defend themselves from these smears and may come under violent attack.

A Block in the verse enables exactly the same thing.
