So why use #MFM (#Misskey Flavoured Markdown) and all of the animation power it provides (on #calckey eg)?

... Because where we're going ... we don't need words!

This was literally the top of my #calckey timeline just now (the actual animation goes on much longer than this):

5 second video (GIF) clip. Footage of a screen recording of Calckey, where the same post is being viewed twice (because of boosting). The post contains only emojis, including jellyfish, fish and cats, that have been animated to jiggle and float around the whole post window as though they are in an aquarium.

laurenshof,

@maegul Im probably overanalyzing this to death, but I do feel like these MFM aquaria are pretty important.

masto has super serious culture, that results in both good (tons of discussions/awareness about societal issues) and bad outcomes (hoa racism).

Calckey introduces itself in the blogpost as "Calckey is an open source micro/macroblogging platform that we wanna make sure is enjoyable and fun.", and makes that immediately clear by throwing MFM aquaria at you lol.

I'm really curious how this less serious approach by calckey impacts calckey culture (and eventually, fedi culture at large)

@laurenshof
Me too. I don't need to be convinced that vibes, set and setting matter. And, like you, suspect random aquaria can be strangely very important!

Another factor is combining the fun vibes with starting a new place from scratch together without feeling like you're crashing someone else's (serious) party that maybe doesn't entirely want you there.

[insert fun MFM animation here]

laurenshof,

@maegul also, you saved me the effort of making a gif of the MFM aquaria, that was on my todolist for this weekend for an article about calckey, so thanks!

laurenshof,

@maegul nothing makes me feel more like a true millenial than unironically doing vibes based analysis lol

totally agreed tho

unattributed,

@maegul While I appreciate the creativity that is being put into the use of MFM, I have to wonder how it affects people with accessibility concerns. I've been told in the past that things like Wordle result posts are a PITA for screen readers.
