I've been reading the threads of pundits punditing about the future of the #Fediverse, saying that it will only succeed if it gets taken over by Google, or Twitter becomes an instance, or the app gets a no-choices-required signup, or the current users stop being protective of "their" network.
But as long as they keep talking about "the Mastodon protocol" and "the Mastodon network" and fail to see the bigger #Fediverse then they don't know what they're talking about and I'm gonna ignore 'em.
@dekkzz76@bobjonkman@strypey@lispi314 my innermost plaintive mewling is that there is a thread of insight in the awful obliviousness of the suggestion that Alphabet, or Twitter, or someone needs to Own the fediverse for it to be competitive with other web products. Companies who are members of the world wide web consortium, which defined activitypub, being the set of web requests of a context json that make mastodon, peertube, etc etc. Why wouldn't web megacorporates dominate web products?

Very kind of him to funnel all the nuisance account-creators into his servers :P
I think it's possible for the admin of Server X to silence Server Y, preventing its accounts from appearing in the notifications of accounts on Server X, but still allowing users to follow each other and see their posts on an opt-in basis. If so, that might be the solution.

Well that's happened now with the official Mastodon app, which will dump new users into the under-moderated sewer of edgelords and spammers that is masto.social. I expect growth to slow down considerably thanks to this, and turn to more of a mycelial 'from the edges' mode of growth, which may well be a good thing.

I wondered what happened to the GNUniverse. I assumed all the surviving Gs instances had upgraded to an AP version by now, or migrated to a different AP software. But it did seem like a whole bunch of cool people have been quiet since John Mastodon turned off OStatus.
