So I’ve been trying to use Apple Notes as my notes “Brain” so to say. I keep finding myself wanting to go back to Notion due to the lack of functionality in Apple Notes.

I’m thinking about switching apps. What does everyone use as their go to note taking/organizing app?

Some that I’m considering is Drafts, Bear, and Obsidian.

Plz share for maximum reach on the .

nathanborson,

@kylewritescode Wow, what great responses! I agree with @Doony that your choice depends on your needs. I need back links and block (paragraph)-level linking and embedding, so I use Roam Research (Logseq also does this) (I've never used it, by my understanding is Obsidian links only at the note level). I still have a ton of notes in OneNote, and love that app except it lacks back links .
This may be helpful? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_note-taking_software?wprov=sfla1
Would love to hear what you try!

@nathanborson @Doony I ended up just going back to . I am loving it. Using it everyday. Actually making templates also.

@kylewritescode Obsidian is great. I’ve used it for years. But recently I found myself slowly migrating back to Apple Notes for everything. I was already using apple notes for personal and family things, but found myself also needing the speed on mobile for work things as well. I still use obsidian for some edge cases but mostly these days it’s apple notes because of its speed and mobile capabilities.

@kylewritescode I've used Obsidian for a quite some time now. It has quite the power user system behind it. I also use it on my mobile and desktop. I don't have the sync features setup, but at times, I think that would help.

For something a little simpler, I recently found Simple Note. https://simplenote.com/

@cjerrington Simple Note looks interesting. Especially the cross platform with Windows. I might have to take a look at this. Any idea if they have sorting/filtering?

@kylewritescode I just started using it this week. There are tags and a search bar. It looks like a long run of notes, not folder filtering like Obsidian, but without extra effort, it does sync cross platform better than Obsidian for free.

@kylewritescode
Just switched from Bear back to Obsidian.
Bear is definitely nicer looking, and uses tags to much better effect… but Obsidian does everything I want.

@matthew Thanks for the feedback!

@kylewritescode
@obsidian and @drafts, especially in combination, is amazing.

@kylewritescode @tym Long-time Bear user here. It just fits my particular style and brain, and looks way better than Notes, making it a joy to use.

@kylewritescode I split my digital brain between Notion and Obsidian. Highly recommend Obsidian because it is more flexible and isn’t distracted with adding AI into every corner like Notion is. I find Notion good for databases (I use it for recipes) and collaborative projects (planned our honeymoon with the wife in it) but I think if I could I’d go all Obsidian.
On my phone, I tend to use shortcuts to open specific pages within both apps, but if I need to jot something down I use Drafts.

@maxmm77 I really like the database and sorting/filter functionality in Notion. I use that ALOT.

@kylewritescode Obsidian has a „files instead of apps“ philosophy, so it’s a bit of a different paradigm. That said the app is great.

ewan,

@kylewritescode I personally moved to Obsidian yesterday. I am already finding the canvas feature useful.

@ewan Hmmm, that looks interesting.

@kylewritescode I use @OmniFocus by @OmniGroup as my external brain, according to the philosophy. (I wish I were more. consistent on the use of that one). For other notes, I use GoodNotes, but I'm also looking for an alternative since they moved to a subscription model. If you can tolerate that, it's a pretty good app.

@kylewritescode I use Obsidian. I like it but have not branched out to try other options yet. Followed the great tutorials from @nicole to get setup. My configuration is pretty simplistic. A folder for each project, dragged to an Archive folder when I'm done. Using it for work, home lab, and personal.

@box464 @nicole I have briefly look at Obsidian before. Might have to give it other look.
