This response from @owncast is befuddling.

Not once did I say that running Owncast is expensive. The server software itself isn’t costly to run, and doesn’t require much in the way of hardware specs.

I said that video is expensive. Which it typically is, especially compared to text, photos, audio, etc.

Now if @owncast knows of ways to save on the cost of video, I’m sure everyone would like to learn how. Because it’s not just me who’s concerned about the cost of video. It’s a whole lot of people who would be running an Owncast server but haven’t yet.

So tell me how to do it. If I’m streaming all my video games, I’d rather use than .

@atomicpoet @owncast Hmmm…I wonder if the folks at @matrix could provide live streaming hosting video tips for ‽ Maybe the team too.

Live-streaming can be expensive & easily skyrocket the cost of hosting (depending on the video quality). I currently rely on & as I can afford those, but high quality live streaming is sadly beyond my budget.

@darnell @atomicpoet @owncast @matrix I think Jitsi (and others) are able to do this at lower cost using WebRTC to coordinate streams directly between clients (i.e., P2P), but when you hit a certain point, it starts to bog down the local browsers/network, which can’t handle all the streams, so you need the central server to coordinate, and that’s when it gets expensive.

@atomicpoet I'm feeling like I must have offended you in some way in the past. If that's the case I apologize. I don't know why you have such feelings to go on the offensive.

If you're asking in good faith, it's exactly as expensive as you want it to be for your use case. I don't know what your requirements are or your hosting options are, so I can't tell you what it would cost. It's like asking the price to run Nginx. It depends what you're doing with it.

atomicpoet,

@owncast I'm not offended. I have no ulterior motives. Yes, I'm asking in good faith.

And yes, the documentation you sent me was helpful. To get to the meat of it, you advise to use an S3 compatible storage provider:

https://owncast.online/docs/resources-requirements/#use-a-s3-compatible-storage-provider-for-bandwidth

This is simply an opportunity for people to learn about , and I'm grateful for your response.

@owncast @atomicpoet third party observer. He just applied a commonly known fact (video is more expensive than images, text, or audio from a bandwidth perspective) to a tool he wants to use. No harm meant on anyone's end.

atomicpoet,

@ernie @owncast This right here. This is an opportunity to learn about . And when I learn, so does everyone who's following along to this conversation.

@atomicpoet @owncast The primary factor here being the cost of outbound bandwidth (and maybe data, if such things are capped)?

atomicpoet,

@tehstu @owncast Yeah, that’s a large factor.
