Don't get me wrong, I love Mastodon and everything it's done for the fediverse

That being said, I don't want Loops to become the only short form video platform, or the only well known one

I'm working with @stux on his own short vid platform called #GoldFish and PeerTube to enable seamless interop

We're stronger and better together

There is no reason NOT to work with "competitors" because when you have the right mindset and goals:

You build for the people, and listen wisely.

100% agree!

This is the approach I'm working on too. We don't need one single Goodreads replacement. Readers want different things, and there are so many alternative services that take different approaches.

Heck, I list them on my own site, and I'd love to work with many of them on interoperability between systems.

@libreture @dansup @stux open source projects in the same space are friends, not competitors. They can share ideas and code and developers, and all parties benefit. A much healthier and more pleasant situation than commercial competitors :-)

I agree we need choice so each of these platforms is excellent at what it does, or the device it runs on, e,g some could be optimised for mobile others for desktop and another for both.

@dansup @stux yet another vine project. huehuehue

@dansup There are a couple of projects out there I am working with one called

tizian,

@dansup @stux I'm loving your energy and do also advocate for diversity in the fediverse. However, doesn't this also inflate the development and maintenance cost since for every service their own apps for every platform has to be developed and maintained? Isn't this quite costly over time? :Blobhaj:

@tizian @stux It does, but PeerTube is already established, and I'm working on reducing the storage costs associated with running Loops by using the latest video formats which use less storage.

It's all about compromise, but in this regard, I think the diversity in short videos is something that should encourage growth and experimentation at all costs

heluecht,

@dansup @stux @tizian I don't think that "costs" is an argument with systems that are build by volunteers. Having a bunch of groups working at a similar problem ensures that the solutions will most likely be better suited for different target groups. Also each developer group can get inspirations by the stuff that other teams did.

Well, there's cost in time and effort. Or blood, sweat and tears, if you will. To go the extra mile and facilitate good interop beyond project scope.

Then there's also the cost-savings of avoiding a whack-a-mole driven development situation, if interop were to depend on 1-by-1 adaptations to different app-specific protocol flavours, and integrations against moving targets.
