So, I’m curious: there’s a growing number of hosting platforms specifically for the . For those involved in this, who are comfortable with answering: is there a particular set of tools you use for managing, monitoring, and spinning up instances?

Are those tools open source?

I’m mainly wondering about whether there’s some kind of open platform / dashboard / infra tools that could serve a particular need for hosting / managing / provisioning Fedi servers, and whether the existing hosts in the space would benefit from a shared project of some sort.

@deadsuperhero I don't know of any, not yet, and such tend to be proprietary

@deadsuperhero

SpaceHost has some custom tools we created, BUT —

We still have more work to do. There are still a number of more tools we need to create. It is on our (internal) road-map to create them.

But we haven't created them yet.

...

For example, we still need to create a tool that monitors when a server's drive space fills up, and do something about it.

Right now it is @rjbasitali manually monitoring things. Which is not ideal.

It needs to be automated.

Which will happen later.

@reiver you've not gone for object storage? That seems like an interesting choice to me.

Would be interested in hearing insights from @mastohost @spacehost @hosting @raphael @stux if any of them are comfortable with shedding insight on this stuff.

In case y’all are only seeing part of the thread: what tools do you all use for customer management / server provisioning / deployment / etc?

Would an open source platform for deploying, provisioning, and managing Fediverse platforms benefit you? Or am I grossly misunderstanding the domain area?

Have you already dropped into the Matrix room ?

mastodon_moderation:matrix.org

Might not be the right one, but they may have suggestions.

@raphael @mastohost @stux @spacehost @hosting

@blaise who runs that? I'm continuously learning of new matrix chats that seem to further fragment conversations & community

@thisismissem
I'm not certain who runs it and I agree that we lack a useful directory of admin communities.

I wonder if a solution might be to adopt someone hashtags, similar to well known tags like FediTips and FediHire ?

I meant to withdraw my previous suggestion when I considered that moderation and hosting are quite distinct admin activities.

@blaise well, we are working on IFTAS Connect as a hub for moderators with lots of information; IFTAS also has matrix channels for moderation and implementation of moderation tools

@deadsuperhero Well, I'm kinda uhh "oldskool" in this perhaps :blobcatgiggle:

I am a super fan of standalone installtions of basically everything! Somehow I feel a lot more in control and know exactly where to look and what's happening

All my instances are setup from source without any manage tool so to say

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@deadsuperhero I kind of feel in a similar way as @stux, meaning I prefer to have control over what I am running and to understand anything going wrong.

Now if an amazing tool (or set of tools) existed, then sure I would probably use it. But for example, on an infrastructure like mine https://masto.host/infrastructure/ I doubt that a tool could support it without any custom changes.

Honestly think there are other tools the Fediverse needs more than this. The number of new installs is not that high.

@deadsuperhero @mastohost @stux @spacehost @hosting

Not fully automated yet, but a short description of my setup:

  • Docker Swarm cluster to serve instances
  • Customer support via email / matrix / website / discourse
  • Ansible to deploy/update/decommission customer instances depending on their configuration
  • Logs aggregated via Loki, alerts and observability with Grafana

I also think that every Fediverse server would greatly benefit from open source telemetry tools, like Sentry, to highlight exact details and context when something breaks.

A service that could give someone a Fedi server and automatically set up Sentry tooling with good defaults for each stack / server type, maybe even make it easy to hook into a Matrix room for alerts? That could be a big deal for server operators as well as hosting companies and developers.

@deadsuperhero sentry.io?

deadsuperhero,
@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

@jonoabroad Yeah, it’s an amazing tool for finding root causes and errors, surfacing context, and even showcasing what commits / changes caused a particular issue.

I’m a former employee, and don’t have the most positive things to say about the company. But, the product is open source, and it’s really good.

@deadsuperhero this is always the way.

@deadsuperhero
Well, I have been on this soapbox for the past 8 years at least.

Fwiw, @getsentry has excellent dev rel staff and there are some stars who work there (although as I sink into my nap, the only name that springs to mind is Anthony Sottile.).

The folks at @hachyderm have done a lot of research into care & feeding of mastodon servers, so it's feasible to put together an opinionated collection of signals as a default config.
