I am getting a new computer for an elderly and to be able to support it, I'm removing the Windows and want to install a #Linux distro. They have previously used Ubuntu Budgie for about 4 years. Which one of these distros do you suggest for lower maintenance burden in the long run?

@Mehrad
I think you should clarify #fedora atomic desktop, not server or workstation.
#bluefindesktop and #Kinoite are specifically designed for low maintenance.

Hmm got a response from CPUC saying that they're not responsible for enforcement of AT&T's Carrier of Last Resort obligations, and referring me back to AT&T. How is this actually meant to work? (Yes, I know all they're nominally obliged to provide is a basic copper landline service, that's all I'm looking for here)

In my part of Massachusetts, the copper 48v POTS network is no longer active. I think that is actually not unusual.
I wonder how your situation will work out.

The reason why we would love to see more accounts talk about composting on the is simple.

You will be able to focus on your area and explain to local people what they can compost and where they can get their organic matter.

You can create a local community that will help your local area make a better place.

If we started this account it is for a main reason. Make people understand that by choosing to compost they can have a positive impact and do something about the .

So creating a multitude of local accounts that will allow people to organize and make their area a better place is a very powerful thing to do for the .

Incoming! A severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm is expected to arrive around 02:00 UTC Friday night / Saturday morning.

At least 5 Coronal Mass Ejections took place over the past 24 hours, directed towards Earth. These originated from a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664).

There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

And bright auroras as far south as Alabama!

As we make our five (now four) year plan more concrete, we want to come back to the high level goal and measures that help us to understand what we are doing, why, and if we are being effective.

TL;DR - Weโ€™re going to double the number of contributors who are active every week.

Thing is, โ€œAshkenaziโ€ doesnโ€™t even mean โ€œEuropean Jewโ€. It just refers to a specific tradition of practicing Judaism.

Besides Ashkenazim, other Jews have lived in Europe. Guys like Benjamin Disraeli, Baruch Spinoza, and Peter Sellers arenโ€™t even Ashkenazi. Theyโ€™re Sephardi.

Not that this matters to anti-Semites, though.

blaise,
@blaise@fosstodon.org avatar

@atomicpoet
I was surprised to find that Jews in the US are usually unfamiliar with sephardic Jews at all and often surprised that the first Jews in the new world were sephardim from Spain and Portugal.

Apparently there was a lot of rivalry between Ashkenazi and sephardic Jews in Europe.

blaise,
@blaise@fosstodon.org avatar

@atomicpoet
Yes, I agree with your assessment as far as Jewish scholars are concerned.
My anecdotal experience with secular Ashkenazi jews tended to represent sephardim as mizrahi as oddities and less relevant to Jewish history.
I don't have any experience with Israel.

On my mother's side, we have an awareness of our sephardic heritage as recently as her paternal grandparents.

It's impossible to conceive of Hispanic culture without sephardim. Even though the identity was driven underground

The origins of Spanish (a portmanteau of Castilian, arabic and aragonese to span the unified territories) are steeped in Ladino, the language of the sephardic community.

So, Iโ€™m curious: thereโ€™s a growing number of hosting platforms specifically for the . For those involved in this, who are comfortable with answering: is there a particular set of tools you use for managing, monitoring, and spinning up instances?

Are those tools open source?

Iโ€™m mainly wondering about whether thereโ€™s some kind of open platform / dashboard / infra tools that could serve a particular need for hosting / managing / provisioning Fedi servers, and whether the existing hosts in the space would benefit from a shared project of some sort.

Well, I have been on this soapbox for the past 8 years at least.

Fwiw, @getsentry has excellent dev rel staff and there are some stars who work there (although as I sink into my nap, the only name that springs to mind is Anthony Sottile.).

The folks at @hachyderm have done a lot of research into care & feeding of mastodon servers, so it's feasible to put together an opinionated collection of signals as a default config.

Contest cultures ("constantly prove you belong! Prove you're smart! Everything here is a dog eat dog competition!") tear people down under the guise of "toughness" and "identifying brilliance." In psych, we know this is destructive to long term sustainable work and mastery. We know it's systematically leveled at marginalized folks more.

These beliefs are at the heart of it all. This cannot be what we continue to let define who belongs in technical work and cultures.

I get that it makes some stuff easier, but I'm not a huge fan of the fact that we've replaced virtualenvs with docker containers.

I guess I need to adapt the way I work and learn new tools, but I really hate having so many layers between me and my files. Makes debugging such a hassle ๐Ÿ˜ฟ

(this toot brought to you by a 2h fight with docker that I apparently lost)

blaise,
@blaise@fosstodon.org avatar

@hjwp @oinopion @bmispelon @carlton @vossisboss @_chrismay @ghickman

Having read the various threads and having the deepest respect for you all, I'll offer a different take.
To put a finer point on @webology s comment, tools solve different problems.

The benefit of Docker is portable version control for your venvs and interpreters.

The drawback of Docker is that, like git, it's easy to do badly.

It breaks my heart to read comments like "I spent xx hours fighting with Docker".
๐Ÿงต

blaise,
@blaise@fosstodon.org avatar

I have been there. It sucks. The APIs are numerous and inconsistent. App devs should not be expected to make decisions about how to network their containers or how to cache their layers.

Civilians find the difference between Dockerfile, docker-compose, docker-machine and kubernetes bewildering.
So Docker becomes "works on my machine"-as-a-service.

I don't think the answer is to revert to the most familiar.
