What's the ( ) concerning boosting your own toots CROSS-SERVER? Say I have a backup account on server X but normally use server Y for posting. Is it acceptable to regularly boost the content from Y using the server X account, or is it frowned upon?

(boost for reach kthnxpls)

@oblomov glad to see top choice narrowly in the lead (I don't have two accounts myself, but let people like what they like, do what they do! ) In my feed I can always hide boosts if in my opinion they overdo it. It can be a good way to increase visibility without algorithm.

@oblomov if it's a backup account I don't see what it'd be good for. Presumably you don't want anybody to only follow the backup account, so they see everything already from the main account?

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@HeNeArXn yeah, the original intent was to have the boosts as a way to mirror the content to the local timeline of the other server, except that in the mean time I learned that boosts to not, in fact, appear on the local timeline, so the usefulness of the plan has kind of flown out of the window. It would work better if Mastodon supported distributed/nomadic identities.

RolloTreadway,

@oblomov I would say it's acceptable as long as you're reasonably considerate. If you think it's worth sharing with folk on both servers, then boosting is just easier than retyping the post on the second server.

But I don't think it would be acceptable to routinely boost every single post you ever make.

@RolloTreadway that's the thing. The other account is basically a backup of this, so I don't actually use it. Anyone following me there might just as well follow my main account. If they don't they're either dormant (and wouldn't care about the boosts) or don't care about what I post (in which case they might just as well stop following me).

(The other server also has stricter lang requirements, so I would only post by native-language posts anyway.)

@oblomov
People decide for themselves whether they follow either or both of your accounts, no?

No worries, then 😃

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@notsoloud yeah, the poll made much more sense when I thought boosts would appear in the local timeline.

@notsoloud@expressional.social avatar

@oblomov
They do on my instance, I think that's standard. But either local timeline will only see the local boost.

In any case, there's a function to "hide boosts from this user" - maybe that could be useful?

yuki2501,

@oblomov I have a dedicated account in another server for my novel. When I post a rather interesting post concerning that, I boost that post from my novel-related account.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@yuki2501 I think that's a bit different though, which is why I specified “regularly”. The scenario I'm thinking about is more about using the secondary/backup account like a sort of “mirror” for the main account.

Velveteen,

@oblomov I boost my pixelfed posts to my akkoma account here, I don't see why not unless it's particularly spammy.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@Velveteen I think the case of different services is … well, different ;-) though. The case I'm thinking about is more “same to same” (like Mastodon-to-Mastodon or more in general microblogging to microblogging).

Velveteen,

@oblomov yeah. That's why I opted for a reply and not a vote, didn't want to mess with the data set 😅

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@Velveteen I mean, you can still express your opinion on the in-service mirroring 8-D

luca,

@oblomov not on a regular base.
I understand it if it's just to occasionally say "hey, look at this picture! or my long form! or my video, or my different topic content"

Like boosting/reminding your many different identities

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@luca I think I was missing the fact that boosts don't go into the local timeline, so they would only be useful to those that follow account X but not account Y. OTOH, those boosts would be hidden (if done quickly) if they follow both, so they shouldn't be too much of annoyance.

@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

Note here that I'm talking about netiquette independently from server rules. I understand that specific servers may have more lax or more restrictive rules about this than the “general attitude” towards the practice.)

(Also why do people vote for “qualified” entries but then don't specify the qualification?)
