A long, long time ago, when people exchanged usenet posts with weird dial-up connections (SLIPPP or Trumpet Winsock, anyone? ;) We had some fundamental rules on how to treat other people online — #rfc1855, also known as the #nettiquette [1]. Not that people followed them. That’s why rules typically are written. To document unwanted behaviour :). Maybe it’s time to collectively try to define the #fediquette?
This is your periodic reminder that you will be happier in the #Fediverse and find it more rewarding if you are quick to follow people and also quick to unfollow / mute / block.
Quick to follow is important because that's how to build a community of interest.
Quick to unfollow etc. is even more important, because you don't owe anyone here your time or attention and you shouldn't give it to people who don't spark joy. #FediTips#fediquette
while we are about unions and organising, we are just one instance in the broader fediverse. moreover while we are a topical instance we are not strictly so, and our members may post on any subject within the code of conduct.
when complaining and/or reporting, please look whether you are reporting a local or a remote (with something other than our server after the @) account.
Just a reminder that you can go to the "filter" settings of your preferences to filter out hashtags related to news/media/subjects you don't wish to see on here.
And a gentle reminder to those who are posting about TFG news to use hashtags so people will or won't see it according to their preferences.
A gentle reminder that this is Disability Pride Month—a perfect time to get into the habit of adding ALT text to any pictures you post. There are many sight-impaired individuals that would appreciate it, and even those with excellent vision sometimes need clarity on what is going on in a picture, or what is significant about it. ALT text is also a great opportunity to add more context, humor, or commentary.
I think I've been able to interact with more people in a single day on here than I have in months on the bird app. :welp:
I'll admit I am still apprehensive about getting invested in yet another social media site, but #Mastodon folks have been kind and welcoming so far. It's a pleasant feeling to not be shouting into the void for once. I also like the fact that hashtags are actually pretty useful here.
I have various hang-ups about the official app's functionality: It's quite clunky and keeps dying on me mid-toot. I'm also not fully up to speed on #Fediverse know-how. #fediquette? Also, server-jumping/ #instance-hopping seems like rocket science. I guess I'll figure it out eventually.
Citizens of the #Fediverse:
Be proud to be a new person's first follower on here. Let's welcome our beleaguered new escapees from #Twitter and remind them how friendly a real, authentic social network can be. Adopt a newbie; help them find their footing and teach them good fediquette.
#Fediverse etiquette (#fediquette?) question: If someone makes a followers-only post, what should the privacy setting be for a reply? y default it's followers-only, but my understanding is that then the reply would only be visible to my followers, with only people who follow us both being able to follow the whole conversation. I usually just reply as a DM, but is there a better way to go?
Hey, I just wanted to know if the general user base would be fine with OC content crossposted from Reddit. I have maybe 10 OC memes and I want to contribute to the Fediverse, but try not to annoy anyone, especially since these have my Reddit username as watermark....
What's the #fediquette (#fediverse#netiquette) concerning boosting your own toots CROSS-SERVER? Say I have a backup account on server X but normally use server Y for posting. Is it acceptable to regularly boost the content from Y using the server X account, or is it frowned upon?
"...historical #fediquette, and you deserve backlash if you take the position of "wait and see" and "benefit of the doubt"..."
"For those that can scale infra costs even if not federated, 👉the knock-on effect of backed up queues on other servers that may be #Meta federated willingly or unknowingly is gonna be an unprecedented traffic jam of blown message queues, server hangs and outages.👈"
Most mastodon instances should be dedicated to a specific topic (like fosstodon to free and open source software) to take advantage of the local timeline. This #fediquette is currently being largely ignored.
OC Foreign memes?
