Has anybody written on the influence and impact of people on the & ?

Looking for sources for a piece I'm writing.

@actuallyautistic

river,

@mariyadelano @actuallyautistic I would assume that the impact is that it exists.

ablackcatstail,

@mariyadelano @actuallyautistic I haven't written on it but I have casually observed that the is an acceptable and safe place to discuss our at length and detail and have people genuinely intrigued by what we have to offer. Some of us (like myself) are experts in the minute details of the way networks and communications operate.

It's been a place of education and teaching for me: A real respite from the skullduggery and exhaustion that being in a work can really and truly be.

anthonytordillos,

@mariyadelano I feel like I've seen @atomicpoet talk about this at least a few times? Managed to find this post on how many early adopters of the Fediverse were autistic, and I vaguely remember another post on the neurodivergent people who helped build the Fediverse.

@anthonytordillos thank you! I remembered seeing some of those posts but couldn’t find anything @atomicpoet

So far, haven't found anything. Been searching this entire time.

I will stop looking for this and assume that unless someone does reply to this thread with links, I should proceed based on my own observations.

Kind of a bummer and I hope something turns up... but I can still write about this

giulia2575,

@mariyadelano Brain injured here. I had to use Ice Cubes for disabling autoplay, which is a real problem for me. I also can't find news about the situation in Belarus and resources for helping political prisonners. Now, Twitter is way too unsafe for this kind of job https://nafo.uk/@giulia2575/110645597392433420 #Mastodon #accessibility #NAFO

@giulia2575 @malleegirl57 that's so important. I tend to disable autoplay everywhere I can too because it can be such a cognitive drain.

I can look for news on Belarus for you later today / tomorrow once I'm done with this piece. Would love to help!

giulia2575,

@mariyadelano @malleegirl57 Thank you. Already found Viasna account here. But can't find Andrei Vaitovitch, a Franco-Belarusian journalist. Nor Tsikhanovskaia, nor DissidentBY. I can't go back on Twitter for my friend's safety: she was a political prisonner in Belarus.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@giulia2575 @malleegirl57 yeah, people covering anything to do with Eastern Europe have been a bit slow moving here. I'll help you find whatever I can! (Don’t have a Twitter account at all so we can locate some alternatives)

giulia2575,

@mariyadelano @malleegirl57 Thank you. I have no idea if Andrei Vaitovitch will move here.

avuko,

@mariyadelano I can imagine it is difficult to find people who publicly identify as ND, and have an impact on things around here, and can or want to tell how it all meshes together.

But I’m pretty sure this is a thing, so very curious what you can turn up!

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@avuko i'm surprised mostly because so many people here ARE public about being ND and a lot of us have blogs / newsletter / write all the time. I kind of took it as a given that there would be tons of pieces on this topic!

avuko,

@mariyadelano Maybe it is so blatantly obvious to us, we forget it’s not normal? :P

I did find an interesting academic paper about neurodiverse users on TikTok. Just skimming so far but I do see some common themes: https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3579490

Found two more interesting papers about neurodiversity and social media (no clue about bias or conclusions, still quickly skimming for now):

Pretty basic paper from 2020 but does provide some grounding:

Benefits and Challenges for Social Media Users on the Autism Spectrum - https://stirlab.org/wp-content/uploads/2020_Benefits_Challenges_Autism.pdf

@tg9541@mas.to avatar

@mariyadelano I agree, it's pretty basic but some of the observations look familiar. Strategies like joining hobby/interest oriented groups should be discussed, too. It's possible, however, that observations would be similar.

    @icg937 yeah, the combination and differences throw a wrench into talking about… any of this. I was looking for papers on both ADHD and autism + other kinds of neurodiversity (brain damage, for example) but studies focus on one type versus another.

    Will be considering all of this as much as I can

  • cytokine_storm,

    @icg937 @mariyadelano this might stem from them previously being described as separate disorders and you couldn’t have both. Obviously ridiculous for anyone with lived experience of having either diagnosis! But often these things are dictated by people who talk about us, not as one of us.

    You both might find it interesting that large genetic studies of both diagnoses indicate significant overlap. Similar to the much more complete studies showing that schizophrenia and bipolar are two poles of one thing.

    mariyadelano,
    @mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

    @cytokine_storm @icg937 yes, I’ve been following the new research and it seems that they could be the same condition with ADHD as a particular manifestation of ASD… of course more studies need to be done but it’s kind of fascinating. I often don’t think of them as all that separate

    cytokine_storm,

    @mariyadelano @icg937 its an easy one for me to reconcile because I have symptoms of both. Its a good Rorschach test to see what a given person would label me with 😂

    I personally think the bipolar schizophrenia link is less ambiguous but I think that reflects the severity of mania and hallucinations. Where as ADHD and ASD present as much broader spectrums(s).

    @mariyadelano For exploring outside Masterdon there is an excellent email discussion list of disabled researchers (both researchers with a disability & researchers investigating disability issues) that are very helpful & with access to all the expensive paid research databases http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/DISABILITY-RESEARCH

    sleepysnorlax,

    @mariyadelano @actuallyautistic id love to know about this, too :blobcat:

    ls,

    @mariyadelano Just saying the stuff you've been talking about writing recently about is all really intriguing. Keep it up—and I want to read it! 👏

    mariyadelano,
    @mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

    @ls thank you! Trying to do this justice but it's pretty ambitious, hence the time it's been taking.

    ls,

    @mariyadelano Good writing is like fine wine—it takes time, but it's worth it!
