I thinks it's unnecessary to ask whether you've played Doom 😁
But on which platform you played it first? 🕹️

@repeatro PC was my first exposure to Doom

    @mforester

    Thanks for that. I think I should really give it a try :blobcatcoffee:

    @repeatro @mforester when was a kid playing out in PC I didn't really 'Get' because I just entered the cheats and blasted demons.

    Played it in the years since and it's a good experience. I'd say that the first 3 episodes are the best, some very good level design. Doom2 is kind of more action, but the levels are a mixed bag.

    I was a shareware Doom player back on our first family 486

    @Hundstrasse @repeatro I'm glad you brought it up. Doom 2 is pretty much just more of the same, but for whatever reason, I could never make it through the sequel. Something's slightly off with it, but I can't put my finger on it. I think the level design is just a tad worse, but it might be something else.

    Hundstrasse,
    @Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

    @mforester @repeatro yeah, level design in 2 is very very variable. They also leaned heavily into big open areas, but mostly they feel empty and difficult to navigate.

    Also without episodes, you fully load out your weapon set really early on and keep them for the rest of the game. The original dripped the player the weapons throughout each episode.

    @repeatro I have never played doom. And when I took a look into it, I was overwhelmed with all the different versions.

    What's the most authentic way to play it?
    And what's the most convenient?

    I was thinking about playing one of the console ports because it's easiest to get up and running with an emulator :drgn_think:

    ChippiHeppu,
    @ChippiHeppu@retro.pizza avatar

    @fell @repeatro The best way to play Doom today is by using any of the community-made source ports. GZDoom is the most feature rich source port, but for a more authentic experience with some nice QOL improvements I recommend DSDA-Doom.

    @fell

    I think the most authentic way is playing on PC/DOS, where it was released first. The quality of the console ports differs. The SNES port is really bad, this PS1 version should be fine.

    486 dx2-66mhz with 4mb ram and 249mb disk ;)

    @peturdainn@mastodon.social avatar

    @nxadm @repeatro heh my system was a 486dx2-80 (with the vesa local bus overclocked to 40MHz but both the SCSI controller and video card didn't mind.

    Can't rule out I also played it at an older/slower one too. But that was the last one (+/-) I played games on.

    nxadm,

    @peturdainn @repeatro

    Vesa local bus. Wow, it has been ages since I heard that name ;)

    @nxadm

    cool, you even know the specs 😆
    I have never played it in my life, I am not really into FPS. But I have the PS1 and SNES version in my collection.

    nxadm,

    @repeatro

    I am not a FPS player, but when Doom came out it was revolutionary. So, impressive despite getting a little seasick ;)

    nxadm,

    @repeatro

    I didn't know there was a SNES version or that it had the juice to pull it off!

    repeatro,
    @repeatro@mastodon.social avatar

    @nxadm

    It hadn't the juice 😆
    low framerate and reduced resolution/FOV. It's barely playable. But always nice to have such things in the collection 👌

    nxadm,

    @repeatro

    Certainly. Love the SNES. So many great games. SNES and GBA are top 2D graphics until today.

    repeatro,
    @repeatro@mastodon.social avatar

    @nxadm

    Definitely. But I also like Genesis/Mega Drive. It also has nice 2D graphics 👌

    nxadm,

    @repeatro

    My nostalgia kicks in with the megadrive. I really "discovered" the SNES decades later.

    The MegaDrive has the best beat em ups, but how can you compete with the depth of Super Metroid and Zelda Link to the Past?

    Playing ATM: Metroid Samus Retuns (3DS) on the steamdeck. Not easy to find a last gen 3ds xl around here for a normal price.

    @nxadm

    Yeah, good RPGs and action adventures are rare on Mega Drive. But I like its Sonic Games on other good Jump'n'Runs.

    I also never had access to SNES as a child, started loving the console as an adult collector.

    nxadm,

    @repeatro

    When I was a child you could rent Genesis and games for cheap on the weekend, the same place you rented movies.

    Played lots of Sonic, but also a lot of other gems. Once and a while I try to remember names or google for images.
