Did you know you can easily search through your own Mastodon posts?

Just include from:me in the search field.

Instead of this, you can include in:library to show posts you have interacted with or written yourself.

If you want to search through posts of a specific user, include from:username (the full username, including the instance)

If it doesn't work, have a look at this:

@metin good use of Edit Older Post !

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@BRicker 🙂👍 I love the edit option here on Mastodon. ❤️

@VoxofGod@mastodon.social avatar

@metin If this has been covered already my apologies but I just need to run to the farmers market quickly before they run out of bread and want to check if anyone has a quick easy answer to how to search through my likes and forwards?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@VoxofGod As far as I know, you can't search your favorites at the moment. You can view your favorites by adding /favorites to your instance's URL.

I suspect you also can't specifically search in your forwards only.

A follow-up post regarding the Mastodon search tips:

If the search options don't work, the reason might be that your Mastodon instance maintainer hasn't implemented Elasticsearch.

Also important: do not use capitals anywhere in the search conditions. E.g.: "From:me" doesn't work.

@help hello can I ask if has configured? as "from:me" gets no results @metin

xrobau,
@xrobau@mastodon.au avatar

@Heliograph @help @metin we do not have search. It has been frowned upon previously, but the tides are changing.

Heliograph,
@Heliograph@mastodon.au avatar

@xrobau @help 👀 should we have search you think? would it be an effort to have it? @metin

xrobau,
@xrobau@mastodon.au avatar

@Heliograph @help @metin It's quite a bit of extra infrastructure and fiddling. I'll have a think about it after the conference is done!

LifeTimeCooking,
@LifeTimeCooking@mastodon.au avatar

@xrobau @Heliograph @help @metin I miss it - even to find my own older posts.

thibaultmol,
@thibaultmol@en.osm.town avatar

@metin is there an 'in:' for just 'from accounts you follow'? Cause 'library' is specifically ones you've interacted with. But I'm trying to search for posts that are just from people I follow but don't have necessarily interacted with.
(and also if it then would be possible to include boosts or not include boost from people I follow)

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@thibaultmol Good question. My tips were distilled from this Mastodon search info page:

https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-search-for-stuff-on-mastodon/

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@metin Oooh, I knew "from:me" but “in:library" is an exciting new option!

nicolegoebel,
@nicolegoebel@digitalcourage.social avatar

@metin doesn't work for me 🤔

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@nicolegoebel See the thread for a discussion. Some Mastodon instances turn out to not support it yet, and the search operators need to be in lowercase.

TildeGartenzaun,
@TildeGartenzaun@mastodon.social avatar

@metin
At least for my instance the "from:" is case snesitive. My phone always starts with a capital letter in text fields and I end up writign "From:" and nothing show up in the search.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@TildeGartenzaun Yes, see the thread for a discussion about that, and more. 🙂

capsulejay,
@capsulejay@mastodon.world avatar

@metin Thanks for sharing! This works for me, but only if I make the "f" in "from" lowercase. Initially, my phone kept automatically capitalizing it, causing it not to work.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@capsulejay 👍

The case-sensitivity has been discussed in the thread.

BlueDot,
@BlueDot@left-tusk.com avatar

@metin

Doesn't work for me in the web interface. Is this something that's implemented in one of the apps? or a new version of Mastodon?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@BlueDot Have a look at the thread / discussion that followed the post. There are a few factors.

bortzmeyer,
@bortzmeyer@mastodon.gougere.fr avatar

@metin It apparently depends on some option on the instance (on mine, it tells me it is not available).

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@bortzmeyer Have a look at the discussion, you might find more info.

pheraph,
@pheraph@mastodon.social avatar

@metin It is worth mentioning that the search string is case sensitive, so “From:me” isn’t working, but lowercase is. So it could be that autocorrect is not your friend in this case.

This could be a nice feature in the @IceCubesApp user interface.

WizardOfDocs,
@WizardOfDocs@wandering.shop avatar

@metin does this work if your posts are unlisted/otherwise excluded from full text search?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@WizardOfDocs Good question. Maybe posts don't need to be set to searchable if you're searching in your own posts? 🤷‍♂️ I've got searchability activated.

MnemosyneSinger,

@metin I can only search user names and hashtags. I guess my instance doesn't allow full search.

pascaline,
@pascaline@mastodon.nl avatar

@metin
Can you also do a search for a post that was in an interaction between you and a specific person?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@pascaline Good question. Maybe you can find your answer in this article?

https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-search-for-stuff-on-mastodon/

smeg,
@smeg@assortedflotsam.com avatar

@metin doesn't full text search need to be enabled server side? I found Elasticsearch was extremely resource intense and not especially effective

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@smeg Don't know the specifics, sorry. I only read it in this page when looking if it's possible:

https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-search-for-stuff-on-mastodon/

maxleibman,
@maxleibman@mastodon.social avatar

@metin Nice! Thanks for that. I do this all the time, but I’ve been using “from:@[username].” You’ve just saved me a bunch of typing every day!

zanzi,
@zanzi@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@metin doesn't work. though should have been expected, "Easily" and "Mastodon" never really go together do they

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@zanzi 🙂 Check the thread. It depends on a few factors.

bamboombibbitybop,
@bamboombibbitybop@mastodon.social avatar

@metin Can I search posts I've favorited?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@bamboombibbitybop I don't know that, sorry. I do know you can view your favorites as a list by entering your Mastodon instance URL followed by /favorites

DeborahLeagueFineArt,

weheartgames,
@weheartgames@tabletop.vip avatar

@metin thank you! Do you know if there’s a way to search through only posts that you’ve liked?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@weheartgames 👍

You can find more Mastodon search operators here:

hrw,
@hrw@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@metin sometimes I wonder does Mastodon has search at all.

Tried to search for "6502" and did not got even my recent post.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@hrw Searching for "6502" should result in having a brand new Commodore 64 sent to you. I'll suggest that to the Mastodon developers. 😃

Peace_out_art,
@Peace_out_art@sfba.social avatar

@metin
I tried several variations using this info but it doesn’t work for me.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@Peace_out_art It works fine here. It might be dependent on your Mastodon instance. Maybe some still run an old version of the Mastodon server software. Did you try it in the Web UI? It might also not work in some mobile Mastodon clients.

Juju,
@Juju@magnificentbeardsfan.club avatar

@metin Looks like it depends on which instance you are. I can't do it.

martinsteiger,
@martinsteiger@chaos.social avatar

@Juju @metin Exactly.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@martinsteiger @Juju Yes. Have a look at the post's comments for more info.

Juju,
@Juju@magnificentbeardsfan.club avatar

@metin @martinsteiger I only see two comments because Mastodon federation is really cool and they're the same as mine 😆

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@Juju @martinsteiger I'll write a follow-up post with additional info in a moment.

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@metin This doesn't seem to work on my instance but maybe I have spaces in the wrong place?

And when you say from:me is that literally the phrasing or should I replace the me with my Mastodon name?

metin, (edited )
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@Kay It's simply from:me , and there shouldn't be a space in the mentioned operators or usernames.

Here's a page where you can read more info:

https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-search-for-stuff-on-mastodon/

ModernDayBartleby,
@ModernDayBartleby@mstdn.plus avatar

@metin Yeah @Kay this doesn't work for all of us in all instances. It all fails for me in mine too & my instance's admins said they're looking into why it doesn't work for me in mine

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@metin Thanks for the page link.

It says no spaces so would that mean
from:meSearchTerm? It seems more intuitive to put
from:me SearchTerm but that may be wrong.

Actual examples on layout help.

FWIW I'm old enough to have learnt coding by punching holes in cards. One space wrong and a programme wouldn't run.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@Kay A space is needed between an operator, such as from:me, and the search keyword(s).

For example:

from:me love

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@metin Thanks for clarifying too. I'm always relieved if the answer to something not working is because Computer Says No, rather than me being unable to follow simple instructions (which sometimes happens).

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@Kay No problem, I know how uninstructive some tips can be. 🙂 And I grew up with 8-bits computers, copying pages of BASIC listings from paper magazines, only to discover that there was an error somewhere, and the program wouldn't run. 😅
