English mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing died #OTD in 1954.

During World War II, he played a crucial role in deciphering the Enigma code used by the German military, significantly contributing to the Allied war effort. In his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," he proposed the famous Turing Test as a criterion for determining whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human.

A THING I DO NOT LIKE ABOUT PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE ERROR MESSAGES

Language: NullReferenceException, the object was null on line 37

Me: Which object?

Language: The one on line 37

Me: Yes, but which of the objects on line 37?

Language [patronizingly]: It was null

Update: Florida was one of four states with a lifetime ban, the others being Iowa, Kentucky and Virginia. On November 6, 2018, 65% of Florida voters approved Amendment 4, which automatically restores the voting rights of people convicted of a felony—except murder or sexual offenses—after the completion of their sentences.

My favorite thing about tethering is

nothing

nothing is my favorite thing about tethering

Please, cellular Macs already!

(Today's anti-favorite: if the phone loses reception for even a moment — common on trains! — it disconnects tethering and never reconnects. You're just offline until you notice. Then you need to reconnect from the Mac's Wi-Fi menu again, after waiting for the option to become available, a process that's almost as slow as dialing up your ISP with a modem in the 1900s.)

bamboombibbitybop,
@bamboombibbitybop@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment (assuming you're doing wifi hotspot with mobile data) On some cell carriers, you can massively increase the speed by increasing the TTL on the network packets coming from your laptop by 1 -- they throttle by inspecting the TTL. Assume TTL=64 for your phone and your laptop, when packets from your phone hit the satellite, TTL=63, no throttle. Laptop, TTL=62. Increase the TTL to 65 on laptop and bypass the throttle. No idea if Mac lets you do this. Trivial on Linux and even Windows.

I decided to check if gaming distros gave you an edge in terms of performance, compared to something based, and of a specific gaming distro would perform better than another.

Since I had a @tuxedocomputers mini ITX desktop on hand to review, I decided to combine the two, so I checked whether gaming distros are better for gaming, with 4 game benchmarks I ran on the Atlas S:

@robsonfletcher Pop_OS! is solid and offers good NVIDIA compatibility.

You'll need to download the .iso, available here (if you have an NVIDIA card, select the NVIDIA one): https://pop.system76.com/

After that, you'll need to flash it to a USB stick. You can do this with RUFUS, available here: https://rufus.ie/en/

Then, you'll have to boot your computer with the stick. Usually when you first turn it on, it says "press [key] to view startup options" -- depends on hw. Boot the stick + install

"using linux is difficult. i think it would be simpler for me, a lone consumer in a mid-sized city, to bend the corporate behemoth that is microsoft to my will" is an absolutely wild take.

bamboombibbitybop,
@bamboombibbitybop@mastodon.social avatar

@ghorwood What Linux is missing for everyday folks to adopt it is normal people don't want to install an OS. If you could go into Best Buy and buy a laptop that had Fedora with KDE pre-installed and configured, people would quickly realize that it's actually very solid and usable for non-tech people.

"It's simple -- just download the .iso of your favorite distro (oh, also, pick one), boot into your BIOS, partition your disks, pick a DE, click install"

No, it's not. That's too much for most.

When you talk to people about JIRA, many will say something like "it'd be an awesome tool if it just got rid of all the annoying features and focused on the most important ones". Which is probably true! The curse of JIRA is of course that no one seems to agree on which features are important vs. which ones are annoying. So you end up with all of them anyway.

While the App Store is far from perfect, seeing Delta sustain its position at the top of the App Store is a lovely reminder of its best feature.

That an indie developer can dedicate years honing their craft and then create something so compelling that it beats out apps from trillion-dollar companies, enriching the lives of millions of people along the way.

That’s beautiful. That’s inspiring. And just plain awesome.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have my career at a time when that is possible.

As someone who has taught Git to (literally) several thousand people over 15 years, most of them without CS backgrounds, I am deeply grateful to @b0rk and others for producing cheat sheets and being honest up front about how bad its ergonomics are. It is the opposite of gatekeeping: it tells newcomers who are unsure of themselves that it's not their fault when things go wrong (as they invariably do with Git because of the aforementioned ergonomics).

bamboombibbitybop,
@bamboombibbitybop@mastodon.social avatar

@gvwilson @b0rk Two things can be true at the same time.

  1. Git is a big, complicated, and confusing system with some questionable naming decisions and sprawling documentation.

  2. Git is probably the best VCS anyone's cooked up so far, and it's an extremely valuable skill to learn.

I liken it to Awk, Vim, Emacs, or a lot of other old-school Unix tools. Steep learning curve, huge payoff.

I've reached a breaking point with this current role where I have decided to quit in July no matter what.

Is this stupid? I am well aware of the market and the risks, but my sanity is waning and I need out.

My plan is to get my life back in order re: fitness, diet, sleep, etc while aggressively applying and pursuing IT certs. This feels right, but am I being naive?

After I realized I didn’t use my SteamOS console all that much, because most PC games I’m currently playing are more keyboard and mouse than controller (which is annoying to do on my couch in front of my TV), and after a failed upgrade to the immutable version of HoloISO, I decided to repatriate this desktop in the office and use it as a gaming PC (keyboard / mouse instead of controller), and installed Nobara.

It’s been great so far!
