Remember the reduction of shows and movies were going to happen anyway, since studios were spending like drunken sailors on projects they mismanaged long before these strikes.

People blaming this on new WGA or SAG rates should be given the side-eye. Many will use this as an excuse, just like the companies that raised prices during the pandemic because they could, not needed to.

@virtualbri The studios will almost always find ways to make below the line amounts vanish into the ether.

@virtualbri Are people still doing that? Streaming has been canceling things at an annoying rate for a couple years now.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@tptigger Oh yeah, the whole "Look what the actors and writer's have caused" was instantly an accusation as soon as the strikes started.

@virtualbri No more free money for the studios to blow on $500 million adaptations of JRR Tolkien's lesser farts.

@brianvastag Yes, or shows like Baz Luhrmann's "The Get Down", which spent 120 Million of their 90 Million dollar budget to deliver 11 episodes of the expected 13.

We all remember that show right? Classic work of all time? No? No recollection? Nearly crushed a few companies trying to address notes on it?

@virtualbri I worked on it, so at least I got paid? @brianvastag

@MattMerk @virtualbri @brianvastag Did you enjoy your time working on it?

MattMerk,

@CStamp @virtualbri @brianvastag All we do now is 3D tracking and Matchmoving, which I love to do, so yes!

Putting my creative energy into my own art projects is where the real joy happens, but doing purely technical work on other people’s projects is very, very enjoyable to me. I get a balance I never had before. ;-)

@MattMerk @CStamp @brianvastag That's fantastic!

@virtualbri Oof. Didn't see it.

Btw just looked at your IMDB and see you worked on Legion. I loved that show and the visuals were so innovative.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@brianvastag Yeah, it was a nightmare to work on. But it looked cool and had interesting story elements.

@virtualbri I have a friend who does sound design, in the past for film and TV, now mostly for video games, and he has said stuff like, "You would enjoy these shows less if you knew the pain involved in making them."

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@brianvastag Heh, some are more fun than others! Star Trek is a lot of fun actually, even the hard parts.

Honestly, I don't know the spending habits of drunken sailors, they could actually be more fiscally prudent than an exec starting a streaming channel.

@virtualbri The fantasy was based on people paying the same for a streaming service as they do for cable services -- for EACH individual streamer. Totally nuts.

tptigger,
@tptigger@starbase80.wtf avatar

@lauren @virtualbri You must have pretty cheap cable, but yeah, the days of people paying hundreds of dollars a month for TV are gone

lauren,

@tptigger @virtualbri No, cable around here is outrageously expensive.
