It's so weird to me that one of the oppositions to a stunt Oscar is "How can a layperson know what goes into this?"
Do they think laypeople know anything about editing? Or the nuance of what constitutes production design? They don't know much about the technical categories. And that's okay! At their best, the Oscars are a great teacher.
Conversely, big stunts often constitute water cooler talk. "Did you see that?!?! It was AWESOME."
