Welcome to Autumn 2023 Day 07, 6 Sep, Wexford - Rosslare - Fishguard - Cardiff – London

Today I’m crossing these borders

Here’s today’s intro video from a foggy Wexford https://urbanists.video/w/2Jfa4J7yEDqpmAuFC9zTpu

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Top tip: DON’T take the 06:45 bus from Wexford to Rosslare. It gets stuck in traffic. I cycled 2km past the traffic jam and will get my ferry 💪

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Rosslare Europort clearly can’t handle 3 ferries departing simultaneously.

ToniScott,
@ToniScott@mastodon.scot avatar

@jon
It handles them several days a week, without problems. 🤷‍♀️ I think you were unlucky.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@ToniScott I spoke to a guy on board. 2 it can handle, not 3. And Wednesdays there are 3…

ginnygilmore,

@jon It may have been waiting for the bus you didn't take.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@ginnygilmore it was waiting for cars stuck in the traffic jam - that blocked my bus too! But it worked. We’re docking shortly in Fishguard.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

I’ve 65 mins to get the connecting train in Fishguard. But the ferry was meant to depart at 08:15 and I’m not even on board yet… let’s see how this works the other side!

mikerspencer,
@mikerspencer@mastodon.scot avatar

@jon from personal experience the defining feature of trains in west Wales is delays or missing them and then waiting 3 hours for the next one.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@mikerspencer if I miss it I can’t get beyond Cardiff tonight… not ideal!

mikerspencer,
@mikerspencer@mastodon.scot avatar

@jon Best of luck! It's a nice corner of the world, but the neglect of public transport stings.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@mikerspencer Right. I know it well - from long ago. My parents live in Newport (Gwent, not Pembrokeshire) but we often went to west Wales. But that was all 20+ years ago!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Ok. Departing Rosslare 40 mins late. I’ve got 65 mins to connect in Fishguard. This ought to work…

Mobile now off. See you on the other side on Brexit island!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Credit where credit’s due

Stena Line (Boat: Stena Nordica) has useable free wifi. And the boarding experience was the best so far - they take your heavy bags on for you in a van. And there’s no bag scanning either (something to learn, Roscoff!)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

This is the ship I’m on - Stena Nordica. Rosslare Europort - Fishguard.

Pic taken yesterday at Rosslare Europort.

It’s not quite as nice as Pont Aven (Brittany Ferries) that I took last week for the longer Roscoff-Cork crossing, but it’s perfectly fine. And unlike Brittany Ferries it has free (limited) wifi throughout the crossing.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Ship departed 40 mins late from Rosslare. But docked more or less on time at Fishguard. But as there are no gangways we have to let cars and trucks off before being allowed off as foot passengers…

I’ll easily get my connecting train though.

ScottAS2,
@ScottAS2@mastodon.scot avatar

@jon Is that not a gangway in the picture? Or is that the vehicle ramp?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@ScottAS2 it perhaps once was. But it isn’t connected to this ship.

ScottAS2,
@ScottAS2@mastodon.scot avatar

@jon Yet another entry to the list of transport company mysteries…

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@jon on the Greek ferries, they let foot passengers off first in these situations

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@chrisbegley but on a gangway?

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@jon no, they just hold the cats back. They couldn't get through anyways. The foot passengers are clustered at the front!

Kilometer780,
@Kilometer780@bahn.social avatar

@jon I think the only time I’ve arrived late off a ferry was on a Harwich Hook run. And we were massively late - 3hrs or so. Luckily I didn’t have to rush off the ferry as I was going to the Ruhrgebiet. Meant extra time in bed!
Might ask TfW whether they have a connectional policy if it is late… Got my Performance Manager hat on! 👍🏻

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Kilometer780 I’ll ask the guard. He’s a friendly guy.

th,
@th@v.st avatar

@jon our ferry from Barcelona to Ibiza was literally across the street from the terminal, but they made us take a bus to get there and then we also had to walk through the car loading ramps.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@th sounds sadly typical

th,
@th@v.st avatar

@jon at least they had this delightful waiting area with no signage or accommodations or personnel to tell foot passengers where to go.

    K1ngdaKa88,
    @K1ngdaKa88@zug.network avatar

    @jon weird, at the ferries I‘ve done so far, the footpassengers were always allowed off first if it’s the same ramp🤔

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @K1ngdaKa88 here we had to wait for a bus to take us off…

    K1ngdaKa88,
    @K1ngdaKa88@zug.network avatar

    @jon Lol? As if walking down the ramp is too dangerous or so 🤔😅🫣

    Autumn 2023 Train 14

    12:50 Fishguard Harbour - Port Talbot Parkway 14:47
    Transport for Wales

    Distance: 134km
    Average speed: 69km/h

    Train type: Class 153 Sprinter, 2x1 carriage
    ⛽️
    🚲: ✅ (2 per carriage, but a tight fit)
    🦽: ✅ (ramp on platform)
    🛜: ✅
    🍽️: ⛔️
    🧳: 🤔 (narrow doors, small overhead racks)
    🧽: 🙂 (train is old, but it’s clean)

    Borders crossed: None

    MartinJBreen,

    @jon it’s great that the train station is still on the quayside but a shame that no foot passenger gangway is in use.

    The train looks suited to shorter journeys and certainly wouldn’t entice Irish passengers away from air travel if their destination is further afield than Cardiff.

    At least there are still some direct services running from Holyhead to London.

    elizatech,

    @MartinJBreen @jon although re Holyhead - London, far from smooth going as @robincafolla can attest today. https://mastodon.ie/@robincafolla/111017909702388052

    MartinJBreen,

    @elizatech @jon @robincafolla oh no, that’s painful!

    When I was in Holyhead last month, I saw a Birmingham train depart without any foot passengers from the ferry - our shuttle bus arrived in the terminal at exactly the time of the train’s scheduled departure (it left three mins late).

    AFAIK Eurostar have no obligation to take you on an alternative service if you’re delayed.

    We need a Brusssels/Paris SailRail through ticket!

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @MartinJBreen @elizatech @robincafolla the MDMS regulation ought to help fix this stuff. Forthcoming this autumn.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @MartinJBreen it’s noisy but not uncomfortable inside. This thing is almost 40 years old. There’s wifi too.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @MartinJBreen I take it back. It’s so damned noisy I’ve needed to put on noise cancelling headphones. And the wifi doesn’t work well.

    MartinJBreen,

    @jon oh dear!

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    I’m on a 40 year old diesel train with no air conditioning on bolted (instead of welded) track. The bushes are close to the sides of the train. The train is almost 40 years old.

    No it’s not Romania, but UK… Fishguard-Cardiff on a Class 153 Sprinter

    ag_tn21,
    @ag_tn21@mastodon.green avatar

    @jon 'Great' British Railways. 😉 Perennially underfunded and London-centric. Cymru is another country for these purposes.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    In all the trains I’ve taken I’d not think I’d need to measure sound levels. But here we are. UK, on a Class 153 Sprinter, windows open, hot day

    partim,

    @jon Running over bolted track qualifies as music for sure …

    Alon,
    @Alon@mastodon.social avatar

    @jon This is domestic, right? You're in Britain and not in Ireland, right?

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @Alon domestic indeed. Wales. Fishguard to Cardiff.

    ag_tn21,
    @ag_tn21@mastodon.green avatar

    @jon You'll want to avoid London Jubilee Line. Sunday we had a very rare trip Green Park to London Bridge and sound level was (subjectively) approaching pneumatic drill level.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @ag_tn21 i can handle it if I have to. I’m not especially sound sensitive. But it’s not pleasant over long stretches.

    ag_tn21,
    @ag_tn21@mastodon.green avatar

    @jon Having bought some noise cancelling headphones a while back I was surprised at how effective they were at blocking out most background noise on train or bus even with nothing playing. Probably at least as good as custom earplugs used for motorbike riding.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @ag_tn21 I have some. They help. But are struggling here!

    ambrosen,
    @ambrosen@hulvr.com avatar

    @jon Even on recently upgraded welded rail, I've had some truly deafening experiences on 156s.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @ambrosen that was on welded rail. After Whitland the infra is better.

    ambrosen,
    @ambrosen@hulvr.com avatar

    @jon I guess the advice for anyone travelling from the Severn basin to Dublin is to stick with the Holyhead crossing then, no matter how much they'd like to occasionally see non-Dublin Ireland.

    Also, I did 2 hours in a 3+2 156 Bath to Weymouth recently, and it's amazing that's considered acceptable.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @ambrosen Rosslare only works for Wexford and - sort of - Waterford.

    pony,
    @pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

    @jon i have no idea how loud that is and no calibrated setup to measure for myself, but i find it difficult to believe that the various non-ac regionals of central-eastern europe aren't much worse

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @pony the motor under the floor sounds like it’s constantly struggling / under powered.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    Now a dude has taken his shirt off because it’s hot. There are announcements telling you all sorts of things here, but there’s none against that…? 🤔 And no, I’m not going to try to photograph it

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    Ah he posed

    Squig,
    @Squig@eupolicy.social avatar

    @jon I had to look this up on a map. The railways of south Wales are more complex than I realised.

    How much of the UK rail network have you not yet travelled on?

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @djm_black I’ve travelled rather little of it!

    djm_black,
    @djm_black@mastodon.scot avatar

    @jon I keep an old rail atlas and highlight the lines I have travelled on.

    I have done a fair part of i) Scotland ii) East Anglia iii) in and around London iii) the lines between London and the first two.

    There is plenty I haven't done.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @djm_black I used to do that on paper. I’ve now for the past two years switched to digital - umap.

    djm_black,
    @djm_black@mastodon.scot avatar

    @jon I use OpenStreetMap regularly, but annotating digital maps is not a skill I have yet developed.

    I will take a look at umap, thanks.

    h0m54r,

    @jon There’s only a handful of trains per day along the Swansea district line, it’s a special treat.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    I abandoned the stinky sprinter at Port Talbot instead of Cardiff. And caught a delayed Swansea-London service there instead. Listen to the noise of this thing departing!

    @jon @yrrsinn I am on an air conditioned ICE train in Germany that was probably made in the 90s and refurbed in the last decade, and … actually, I feel your pain? Every express train we've caught in Germany yesterday and today has been delayed, and a third of our booked trains were cancelled! It makes a Sprinter look efficient.

    cstross,
    @cstross@wandering.shop avatar

    @jon @yrrsinn Also, the air conditioning is struggling, there are no windows that open, the noise level on the platform peaked at 98dB, half the toilets are out of service, the wifi fails at random, and the ride is as bouncy as a 40 year old InterCity 125 at speed. It's British Rail! Only German.

    @grrrr_shark @cstross @yrrsinn @feorag Underinvestment hasn’t done DB any favours. It’s still 100% owned by the German state. (Preparing it for privatisation - that never happened - was the start of the rot)

    @jon @cstross @yrrsinn @feorag Ah, right, but they have also sold large portions of regional rail off - sorry, I get the whole mess confused in my head.

    @jon @cstross @yrrsinn @feorag (I became German after it started, so I could probably use a good history lesson ;)

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @grrrr_shark @cstross @yrrsinn @feorag there has been competitive tendering of regional rail. Which has been mixed. Some places better, some worse. But the track, and any trains labelled DB are still state run.

    @jon @cstross @yrrsinn @feorag Thank you for the info!

    PGLux,

    Fiscal austerity has also had its impact, way more than the roadmap to listing with Deutsche Börse.

    In the early-2000s, Frankfurt21 was ditched and there were even plans to cancel NBS Leipzig/Halle- Lichtenfels, even after the works had slowly begun.

    Not to mention Karlsruhe - Basle😬 😬 😬

    yrrsinn,
    @yrrsinn@chaos.social avatar

    @grrrr_shark @cstross @jon @feorag indeed. making the DB ready for the stock market broke it's back.
    Meanwhile trains and tracks in the former east block seem to be in a better shape than in some western countries

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @yrrsinn @grrrr_shark @cstross @feorag you get what you invest in. Germany is mid table in Europe in investment per capita in rail. France is very low - that’s why other than TGVs it’s horrid. Main lines in PL, CZ, SK have improved quite a bit in the last decade.

    marcas,

    @cstross @jon @yrrsinn I'm afraid that's routine. And frustrating, as when travelling on business I try whenever possible to use trains rather than planes.

    The upside, I suppose, is that all those people worried that a reunited Germany would yet again become a bullying tyrant can relax -- these days, the Germans can't even make the trains run on time.

    @marcas @jon @yrrsinn My father used to observe that Americans are Failed Germans at heart. If he could see them now he'd peg today's Germans as Failed Americans, and today's English as Failed Period.

    trantion,

    @jon TfW have had problems with their newer trains this year, I think it's both new trains not working and less old (20 years old 170s) breaking down en mass. So they've fallen back onto more of the old trains, and it's caused cancellations and overcrowding due to shorter trains.

    Still, at least they actually try to run something, which is more than can be said for any of the English TOCs who aren't allowed to reach a deal with the unions

    hestes,

    @jon I feel your pain. New Jersey Transit is still running trains built in the 1970s.

    @jon Ah, like all Scotrail :) I always feel transported back to GDR times when closing my eyes

    @jon Just like the west highland line. I invested in a decent set of noise cancelling headphones to make the three hour journey to Glasgow less headache inducing.

    cwmagee,

    @jon The Soviets didn't electrify Romania's rail?

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @cwmagee main lines in Romania are electrified.

    shipscrewunscrewer,

    @jon tbh it makes a pretty good beat 😅

    @pauljrobinson but that assumes ferries care about foot passengers. Here they don’t.

    @jon Oh, you mean a Ferry. I was following the railroad off Rosslare, but that's how you arrived there, right?

    jon,

    @Zugschlus I’m on Stena Line Rosslare - Fishguard. On this ship - Stena Nordica

    @jon it was never expected to have such volume, and no push to upgrade. Until Brexit. Apparently not straightforward to expand the port due to tides, seas etc (but I'm open to correction here) so intent is there, but it'll be slow.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @derekbrauders the docking space is ok for 3 ferries. The problem is there aren’t enough check in lanes. More are being built.

    @jon ah, the (in) famous N25 roadworks.... Yes, good job cycling there.

    jon,
    @jon@gruene.social avatar

    @derekbrauders not that actually! 3 ferries departing simultaneously caused the road to clog up
