When my sister sold her home, she had her white realtor come to show the appraiser around. She LEFT HER OWN HOME during the process. Right now, my college friend is removing all signs of Blackness from her home before she puts it on the market. All art, photos, statues are being packed. All books are being turned spine in. THIS IS WHAT RACISM DOES.

@StillIRise1963 And unfortunately depending on where you live that only does so much, damn it.

Why is it so difficult for some people to wrap their heads around the idea of systemic racism? How can the fact that houses in Black neighborhoods are consistently undervalued be anything BUT systemic racism?

@StillIRise1963 But here's the good news: it can be different.

'According to the study’s findings, the net value of all owner-occupied homes increased from $4.2 billion in 2014 to $8.1 billion in 2022, a $3.9 billion/94 percent increase in housing wealth over these nine years. It also estimates Black homeowners realized the vast majority of that gain in wealth, with their home values rising from $3.4 billion in 2014 to $6.2 billion in 2022, a $2.8 billion jump.'

@researchbuzz This is good. I always wonder about Detroit.

@StillIRise1963 When we started looking to put our house on the market, I was very clear with the realtor that I knew ALL the data about optimizing offer price. We did an 85% move out before the house hit the market had the house staged and took a trip out of the country for 2 weeks. We only accepted offers while we were out of country. Once we accepted the offer, we made sure to never be visible outside the property.

@StillIRise1963 My very blue state neighbor just put her home up for sale. She was having her home staged and told me with a chuckle, "First, they have to unblack my house." Of course, it was no joke. And she was right - all her beautiful art and her treasured furniture is gone, and it is a cold, sterile look meant to appeal to a majority of buyers (white). I know neutral is good, but this was extreme. Sad.

@StillIRise1963 where I live there are still whites who won't live in a house that was ever occupied by a black person

@StillIRise1963 When my (white) family bought a house in Houston, in the 90s, the first realtor told us "oh you don't want to live there, Black people live there!"

We lived there for as long as anywhere thanks to a different realtor and I just

I don't even know, man

we lived before that in Duri, Sumatra Indonesia

oh you don't want to live there, BROWN people live there

wtf

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@pelielios White realtors wouldn’t show my Black parents houses in the neighborhood they wanted to live in. They had to get a Black one to see the houses.

@StillIRise1963 Oh, yes. It sells for a hella lot more if you whitelist it.

@StillIRise1963 @lovelylovely That’s crazy and sad. We just moved (within the same “purple” SLC area) and as much as I want to fill the yard and porch w/UT Dem candidates & Biden/Harris 2024 signs, a BLM sign, a pride flag and hang our mezuzahs in the doorways, I’m hesitant until I get a better feel for things. I’m encouraged by what I see and who we meet on our neighborhood walks w/pup, but don’t want invite hate and/or vandalism either-big bummer to feel that way.

@StillIRise1963 You're friend should keep the home, it's probably worth more than what the realitor can sell. but I'm not a professional.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@NovaCora My friend is moving to a different state.

NovaCora,
@NovaCora@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 Many people moved out of country with how chaotic the U.S is but I still believe that it's pretty bad that your friend has to go through the racism and discrimination to sell the house.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@NovaCora 99.9% of us are still here and it’s always been this way. Never been different, not even for a second. We learned to do this from our parents. Before that, it wasn’t an issue because of segregation.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@StillIRise1963 that’s really awful.

gentrifiedrose,

@StillIRise1963 Its also bad because white people racialize us so we have to be their stereotype of ethnic or they don't know what we are.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@gentrifiedrose Yep. If one doesn’t fit into their stereotypical, racist tropes, it’s very confusing for the majority.

gentrifiedrose,

@StillIRise1963 Jesus forbid that we are unique individuals outside of our ethnicity, like they are.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@gentrifiedrose I can’t tell you how many times I’ve screamed at people that we’re not a monolithic community.

gentrifiedrose,

@StillIRise1963 They don't understand that concept at all. They literally don't. I can't tell you how many interviewers ask me what language I speak, assuming that I speak another language and when I tell them I have no foreign language skills they get angry. Now tell me that ain't trifling 😂

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@gentrifiedrose 🤣 These fucking people. Jesus.

gentrifiedrose,

@StillIRise1963 Maybe their asses are trifling but they determine if I live or die and they choose death. White people deny they do this but I've overheard my white partners and friends say they'd never be black because of the way they're treated or that asians are treated white...giving away that they know politics very very well. But then deny it 😅

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@gentrifiedrose White people know a lot of things until they get called out. Then, it’s denial or tears.

gentrifiedrose,

@StillIRise1963 white tears I know it well

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@gentrifiedrose I can’t with the tears. It’s so fucking juvenile, it disgusts me.
