Risk averse, Mamma (not mom), friend. Believe in care and courage, love, kindness & persistent rage. A sucker for good food, good wine, live jazz, and a beautifully crafted sentence. Usually willing to shake my moneymaker. Probably checking out your shoes. I'm trying to be a better person every day - failing frequently. Blackety black

When my sister sold her home, she had her white realtor come to show the appraiser around. She LEFT HER OWN HOME during the process. Right now, my college friend is removing all signs of Blackness from her home before she puts it on the market. All art, photos, statues are being packed. All books are being turned spine in. THIS IS WHAT RACISM DOES.

FitsofPique,
@FitsofPique@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 When we started looking to put our house on the market, I was very clear with the realtor that I knew ALL the data about optimizing offer price. We did an 85% move out before the house hit the market had the house staged and took a trip out of the country for 2 weeks. We only accepted offers while we were out of country. Once we accepted the offer, we made sure to never be visible outside the property.

I had to log back in and share this ridiculous 'magical negro" story. Apparently in some dark fragment of the internet, the young Black mayor of Baltimore is being blamed for the bridge collapse. Apparently he was capable of driving the ship AND also building the bridge. Quite a feat since the bridge was built before he was born. I asked the DEI guests if they were responsible for the Boeing air plug but they denied responsibility! Magical negroes are scary.

Hey . Can you help me figure out a mystery?

I have recently inherited a bunch of pictures from my Mom's estate. I found this picture among her things - a picture of an African-American boy.

My family DNA is pretty much 50% cauliflower and 50% Wonder Bread. So, who is this fine young lad, and why was his picture put in our family album?

Interesting, eh?

@ScottStarkey @genealogy The Newberry Library in Chicago might be a good place to start. They have an upcoming workshop, and you could probably reach out to them on genealogical research librarians with your question.

Last night, the result didn’t go our way. We are disappointed, but not regretful. It has truly been a privilege to run in the district in which I grew up. Each of you trusted in me, and I will be forever grateful. Because you have made all the difference.

I don't have the words to express my gratitude to each of you, but let me try by sharing some thoughts...

@QasimRashid It is my great regret that I’m not in your district and couldn’t vote for you…but I have followed your campaign and you gave me hope. You have support in Chicago and I cannot wait to see what you do next. You make America better and I hope you keep doing so.

“Republican-led senate voted overwhelmingly to grant the right to collect child support for unborn children, advancing a bill that garnered bipartisan support.

The measure would allow a parent to seek child support up to a year after giving birth to retroactively cover pregnancy expenses. The legislation – Senate Bill 110 – won Senate passage on a 36-2 vote with little discussion to advance to the House. Republicans have supermajorities in both chambers”

I read college essays and I know the difference between something a student wrote, and something someone else probably did. It doesn't bode well for a candidate to make me wonder either.

FitsofPique,
@FitsofPique@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 This is interesting…my elder is in college application season now and honestly the “who wrote this” question is muddy. She has written all of her essays…BUT these things have been through (no exaggeration) dozens of iterations. There are no fewer than 4 multi-degreed adults who have read and commented on each one. Essay writing started summer after junior year and there’s a whole professional class of school support to test and reject all of the output.

FitsofPique,
@FitsofPique@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 This whole process is what’s considered base minimum standards for the college application process - and we are neither affluent nor applying to Ivies.

Work product when these kids step on campus will have nothing in common with what got them through the gatekeepers.

FitsofPique,
@FitsofPique@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 This is like therapy to my frantic mind. I actually have been freaking out a bit to see the time/effort in producing this “student package” vs the reality of college work production timelines. So thank you for being the voice of measured calm.

FitsofPique,
@FitsofPique@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 I have irrational confidence that the process is broken for every party involved...and I appreciate your confirmation that y'all remain sane and with a heart for the children involved.

I don't know that I could do it.

I've been trying to be a "stress sinkhole" for my kid here. So far, I've been pleasantly surprised by her maturity and generosity of spirit about it all. But again, it's all so terrible in a way that feels...unnecessary & inefficient.

Niki Haley wants to raise the SS retirement age to 70.

Life expectancy for African American men in the US is 62*.

For men in general? 73.

Enjoy your negative 8 and 3 years everyone.

*This is for black men born in 1960 ... the cohort who would be retiring soon if they weren't dropping like flies.

FitsofPique,
@FitsofPique@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Yes, I've been thinking on this for years. In many ways, African American men subsidize social security and keep it afloat, though they never get draw down the dollars.

They get the double bonus of expensive, sub-optimal healthcare to make sure they never get to access all that payroll withholding.

It comes to mind whenever the boogeyman of "welfare cheats" and "black people living off my taxes" pops up.

Chicagoan here: If you’re not used to cold winters, here’s how to keep warm.

• Wear a stocking cap inside
• Make sure cracks around windows/doors are sealed. Use duct tape if you have to. It doesn't have to be pretty
• Use a heating pad
• Run your pjs through the dryer before you put them on before bed
• Keep your furnace temperature as low as you can stand it — it keeps the energy load low, so you don't tax the grid
• Drink hot beverages & eat soup
• Cover your feet

And I cannot agree more with your point that staying warm is about dressing yourself…and not trying to heat the space.

15 GOP governors have rejected summer food money for children

Indiana GOP has filed a bill to allow 14-year-old kids to drop out of school & work on corporate farms

Missouri GOP is pushing 2 bills that charge women with murder for getting an abortion

The “Pro life” party is proudly starving, exploiting, & killing women & children😐

@QasimRashid I honestly can’t even stunt on this…it just breaks my heart and hurts my soul. My parents grew up in the Bad Old Days. When I try to explain my mother’s life to my daughters they just cannot grasp it.

And the very idea that someone would actively recreate that - in WRITING - I just don’t even have capacity to live through it.
