What is the thing(s) that attracts you to a person romantically or otherwise?

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr They don't tell me what TF to do and don't treat me like they're my dad.

Sadly this never occurs in real life and I am hopelessly straight so I remain single.

I stand to come into a very modest amount of money in the near future and plan to let most of it sit in savings for house expenses

but I'm also considering putting a small portion into professional editors and cover artists and seeing what happens.

Writing community, how many zeroes am I looking at? There are 7 books at the moment, 5 with rough covers, could be up to 8 and about a million words by the time this happens.

And advice on vetting people for this?

When my sister sold her home, she had her white realtor come to show the appraiser around. She LEFT HER OWN HOME during the process. Right now, my college friend is removing all signs of Blackness from her home before she puts it on the market. All art, photos, statues are being packed. All books are being turned spine in. THIS IS WHAT RACISM DOES.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 When my (white) family bought a house in Houston, in the 90s, the first realtor told us "oh you don't want to live there, Black people live there!"

We lived there for as long as anywhere thanks to a different realtor and I just

I don't even know, man

we lived before that in Duri, Sumatra Indonesia

oh you don't want to live there, BROWN people live there

My recent diagnosis is explaining a lot for me.

For instance, I've always been super confused why a waiter appears to crack a tiny amount of black pepper from an enormous pepper mill.

It's hardly a precious spice and why can't I just do it myself?? :blobawkward:

@actuallyautistic

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@Claydisarray @actuallyautistic I have an almost feral reaction to shoe salesmen trying to put shoes on my feet. I hate it, I HATE it, I will kick you in the snoot, get your hands away.

My mom had to explain at length that it was a form of pampering.

I think the waiter offering pepper falls under the same umbrella. I feel like it's a huge boundary violation, they're just trying to do their jobs.

@TexasObserver @mloxton Apologies, I spent long enough in Houston to get het up to this day when I feel like someone is leaping to conclusions about its residents from a standing jump. And sometimes end up catching myself defensively doing the same thing in reverse.

24 April: When older novels use outdated or racist language, should they be edited for the modern world or left alone and viewed in context?

I think unless the author wants to change their own work, it should be left alone. Sometimes it makes reading an old work unpleasant. But who really benefits from believing that (i.e.) the British Empire was jolly good with no racism to be seen anywhere?

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@AimeeMaroux I will go on recommending Christopher Hope's Darkest England to everyone who will listen. A bushman from South Africa attempts to bring civilization to the English.

It insane to me how often women are not given pain management for gynecological procedures, because many many years ago a male doctor who's never had a vagina, cervix, or uterus decided that there weren't enough nerve endings up there to hurt significantly. I think it's time to put this fallacy to bed. It most definitely does hurt, and people who have literally no experience with female equipment don't get to decide this for me. Trust me docs, you don't want to taste your own medicine on this.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr And women docs can be even WORSE in this sick hazing kind of way, like "well I went through worse, I've had three kids so quit belly-itchin'."

To a sobbing teenager in a paper gown.

This is why I don't go to doctors anymore. Just let me die.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr One (woman) doctor icily instructed my mother to "STOP SHIVERING!"

It did not inspire a lot of confidence in her medical credentials, I tell you hwut.

I read an article a while back about an oncology prof who made all his students spend overnight visits in a teaching hospital just undergoing the first basic screening tests, as patients.

They came out shook.

@alhatch @amwriting Heyooo! I write basically for mental health reasons to give fictional characters happy lives together. Getying back in after a bit of a dry spell. Welcome.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@alhatch @amwriting Thank you! It sounds much nicer the way you put it, vs me being like "oh, I'm not safe alone with my own thoughts."

Even my "villains" are good people dealt a bad hand. Camille is a prolific poisoner-assassin. But... he's also a jubilant, exuberant fun-loving guy! He has a job, that's all. It's an avenue to restore his family's good name and he tries not to think about it.

His cousin Merveille really DOES love Phon, who constantly trashes her to all who will listen.

18: How important is social media in promoting your work?

I mean, first I'd need to actually promote things... I don't really use any social media except this either.

I have noticed that when I do freebie promotions, I get a lot more uptake if I post about it here than if I don't, so there's that.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@PaxAsteriae Yeah, I wonder how many free downloads translate to readers, though.

I know I've nabbed books during free promos without a real plan to read them soon, but only when their author asks for that for metric reasons.

I might get a spike in downloads but it sure doesn't show up as reviews later, which is disheartening.

But it's fine. Personally I'm writing for me, not for money. It'd just be nice to have some indication that someone, somewhere is reading.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@PaxAsteriae I've churned past half a million words at this point so if somebody is invested enough to actually read those, I figure I have a friendly audience in them anyway.

I crave connection with people who have found something they needed in my writing, but I am coming around to the fact that I'll never get that.

It's fine. Maybe one lonely person will like them, I guess. It's still healthy for me to write.

Claydisarray, to art
@Claydisarray@socel.net avatar

Life as an artist with a chronic illness is HARD. I've been mulling over the idea of a Patreon for a while but I think unless you have a sizeable audience, it can be a whole lot of work for little financial reward.

So instead, I've set up a shop to sell affordable digital downloads of my work. I've added a few iPad wallpapers and will aim to add a few items each day.

Any other ideas for low effort income streams are welcome! 😜

https://ko-fi.com/claydisarray/shop

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@Claydisarray Idk the only person I support on Patreon has only fulfilled his "end" once in like two years, I don't care. I got a sticker one time, it's cool.

I'd rather he take my money and be busy with creative stuff, which he does seem to be, so I feel like it's a good investment.

I rarely look at the Patreon updates but if he has another movie or something bouncing around in his head, I want him to put more energy toward that than worrying about rent.

But that's me, shrug!

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Will say that as a white girl currently living in America, I have been repeatedly negged by men in this way. "Well we don't all sit around reading the thesaurus all day." ... neither do I? I just ... read ... books?

Delve is not even an obscure word! It's part of a common nursery rhyme!

Not discounting the experiences of colonized populations at all. But yeah we have a man problem.

Ha, I like this one! Ok, let's see.

Phon has a big library of cryptid bestiaries. ("So, fairies are real?" "Here and there on the odd reserve. Protected species." "Huh.")

But he is also sort of an idiot and I wouldn't put it past him to try children's cereal as bait.

He'd probably leave out things he personally likes (including cereal) in a snap-trap because he's too rich to care about gold.

16 How much do you edit as you write, and how much do you leave until the second draft?

I write electronically, not using physical media that set boundaries around drafts. My writing process is fractal and recursive. Sometimes the story grows like coral or shrubbery, with new bits sprouting from existing stems, sometimes it feels like I'm adding another ply of yarn along the full length of an existing cable.
The nearest I have to a 2nd draft was the post-alpha version.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@elysegrasso Yeah I tend to revisit previously-written chapters any number of times as I go along.

I use WriterLite for Android on a cheap tablet with a BT keyboard and it does what I need. Once a story starts to find its feet I start "outlining" by way of chapters, easily split or rearranged as needed. (I have so many chapters numbered things like 12.05.)

But then I write a hangout series and sometimes I'm just spending time with my goodest boys. No formal process really.

If you see somebody described as "he's just like that" or "he can't help himself", ask if he's like that when he might be held accountable. E.g., in front of his boss, his mom, at church, when a video camera is recording.

Occasionally, he really can't help himself. But it usually turns out that he can, and that there's a pattern to when he can't. E.g., he's a jerk to juniors and peer women, but perfectly controlled in front of his male boss. That's when you know it's not illness, it's abuse.

pelielios,
@pelielios@mastodon.social avatar

@williampietri Right up there with, does he ever break his OWN things or is it only yours that get wrecked when he's having a bad day?

Honestly this stuff should be taught in HS health classes.
