I serve on my HOA and our President just called me and essentially cussed me out because I'm having a Q&A for people who want to run to be on the board because, in her words, "You could have just told people to come to me" and "You didnt ask for anyone else's input" despite the fact that I did and she just never responded to my email about the idea.
@BlackAzizAnansi I know a guy who got fined $400 for leaving his trash cans out too long. (He's a professor who was at an international conference.) He appealed the fine to the board at an in person meeting. He put costume eyes, nose, and mouth on the can and brought it to he meeting with him. He said he had nothing to say but the can did. He proceeded to do a ventriloquist routine where the can thanked the board for punishing the man who left him on the street for so long.
Oh btw, she literally called me twice in a row because she took my dog out to poop but went back in and did all of this in front of our neighbor across the street.
@BlackAzizAnansi I didn't want to say anything because I don't know the people involved, but this sorta firms up what I was thinking - she sounds like someone who wants to control who sits on the board through the application of social power; the "you could have asked them to talk to me" bit sounds like unofficial screening. I dunno what you should do, but it sounds like SOMEONE should run against her because that's bad shit waiting to happen.
@AnarchoNinaWrites listen, I had to quit the board at one point because I just couldn't take it but I decided to rejoin because nothing was getting done and when I asked her if she could appoint myself and another neighbor she said she would appoint me but not the neighbor and just gave no reason. Of course I asked her about this and few months later when she said nobody wanted to run and she said "I don't remember that "
@BlackAzizAnansi Ask her to show you where, in the bylaws, you even had to consider talking to her about it. Then check out her property and note any irregularities. There are always some.
@tom_streeter Oh, she's talking about me to one of our neighbors now and accused me of violating the bylaws by not giving her notice of an informal meeting.

@speculater@BlackAzizAnansi I'll only pay market price to not be in an HOA, but I won't make an offer on an HOA property at all, so... supply and demand. I need my bees, flies, RF antennas, and wheelie bins out whenever. And to paint my doors any color I like. And an animatronic Ice Cube singing FTP on a motion trigger. That last one is aspirational, but seems like HOA wouldn't allow it.
@log@speculater I don't mind the HOA tbh because it's a relief to not have to worry about mowing and upkeep of community property, it's just the weirdos with the weird control fetishes who get in positions of power who annoy me.
@BlackAzizAnansi I swear that HOAs are effectively privatized government. But seriously, why would you need to talk to her about talking to people about running for the board?
@gordotango@BlackAzizAnansi that's exactly what an HOA is, a shadow government which doesn't have to achieve the same standards of ethics that the regular government holds itself accountable to. They were created to get around civil rights protections that even a shit government would hold itself accountable to, they are intentionally worse.
@samhainnight oh no, she was emailing me and accusing me of doing things behind her back after I sent the email smile ignoring the fact that the email essentially asked if she would be willing to participate.
