How to use Mastodon:

Step 1: Sign up.

Step 2: Do regular social media stuff.

Journalists: Only those with advanced degrees in computer science should even attempt to navigate Mastodon, the frustrations of its complexities will drive the average user to a state of hysteria.

@lowqualityfacts

If Mastodon is hard to understand I don't get how people learned to use web browsers.

All those URLs, bars, nonconsistant design of web pages, thinking about SSL and weird padlocks, so many settings. Only technical people can use it.

I'm 66. It took a LOT more attention and learning to master the home computer in 1988. Mastodon is not "hard." It just takes attention and intention. Algorithms have made people lazy about creating their own social media community and experience.

Mastodon is way to hard. The horror of of having to think about what to toot next. 😱😱😱

52square,

@pkoopmanpk @lowqualityfacts Gee, I know! 😂 And how does anyone ‘find’ anything without algorithms shoving it all in your face? Where’s my ’breaking news’? Here are some nuts for everyone to look at while I worry about the stress of it.

    @lowqualityfacts I mean, they're not wrong about the hysteria bit but that's true of all social media.

    @lowqualityfacts Not sure if making fun of the voices that find Mastodon too obscure/hard is a good thing :)

    As a , I'm super happy to be here. But not 30% (of my twitter connections have made the jump here, and they invoke the very same reasons without being journalists...

    paul,

    @jeremy @lowqualityfacts

    Part of that is, journalists during the migrations last year puffed up Mastodon being hard to use, not because it's hard to use, but because it didn't replicate their experience on Twitter on day one

    It made me question the reliability of some of the with their other subjects

    It's like complaining Burger King sucks because the Whopper doesn't fit in a Big Mac box

    Journalists, esp tech journalists, have been really hard on Mastodon. Still are

    @paul

    You tell em, Paul!

    Most MSM journalists are used to turnkey comfort in doing their jobs. The Fediverse was like extra homework on a Holiday weekend. They might sniff it late Sunday night, but will wait until Monday after dinner to do it, if they do it at all.

    "That's not my job"-disease.

    @jeremy @lowqualityfacts

    jmbreuer,

    @lowqualityfacts to be fair, subscribing across instances, and even more so interacting with posts linked somewhere else (ie also on other instances) could have a way better user experience.
    I know there's browser extensions and bookmarklets and whatnot, but the user experience for sure could be a lot smoother.

    @lowqualityfacts i dont have a cse degree. Nor a journo and i do regular social media stuff

    obi0bi,

    @lowqualityfacts of course that's what they say. They can't monetize mastodon like they can Elron Musk's Ex.

    primalanomaly,

    @lowqualityfacts please, I can’t even click on the profile of someone I like and view who they’re following without being told “sorry users on other servers can’t be shown” which has always been my main way of finding good people to follow. This platform is a UX abomination 🤷‍♂️

    AAae,

    @lowqualityfacts Well I'm confused regularly, especially when I try to follow someone by search and the link takes me to a website and makes me log in again to be able to follow them. But I've decided that I'll just keep reading and watching what falls on my timeline and it's taking me to some new and interesting people. So I've decided to go with the flow and one day to sit and learn a bit more about Mastodon.

    I don't agree. Not at all. I haven't the slightest knowledge of computer science and I feel much comfortable on the than on Twitter or on LinkedIn. I use and as clients on my devices. After a while, it has become one of my most regular connection habits. Almost relaxing.

    @lowqualityfacts I love how they see the whole “you have to pick a server or even self host” but that’s literally step one of getting an email address. Idiots.

    eyrea,

    @jamesholden @lowqualityfacts No, step 1 of getting an email is having someone from IT tell you what your email address will be. Plus years ago they signed up for Gmail and don't remember.

    Mastodon could be better explained, but if someone is a tech journalist, they shouldn't be the ones complaining it's complicated.
