I've been trying to get off of that ass site for like 10 years now but got sucked in to some of the smaller communities and as everyone knows, for hobby info, reddit is unmatched (unfortunately). It tracks that big subs have tons of people who don't give a shit, anyone else moved to discord or here or kbin or tumblr or tildes or raddle or squabble
I haven't used reddit in a week and a half (I started early) and once boost shuts down I won't even think about it anymore
Right?, it feels rewarding to add the discussion, to help solve issues in the code (if you can), helping people navigate where they want to go.
At least for me, reddit failed in something, making me feel part of its community, kbin is succeeding at this so far.
Edit: Obligatory plug of other kbin instances for new users to join: fedia.io, readit.buzz, fediverse.boo,
By joining them you are spreading the load so we can keep all instances stable.
There is a substantial amount of spam and NSFW posts on the All page coming through already. Most NSFW posts aren't being tagged as such and are coming right through. I am not sure how this can be weathered but we need something in place fairly soon, I feel like we are days away from rivers of bad stuff, especially via some of...
For me it blurs the thumbnail correctly but I have preview media on and it does not blur the preview. I wish this was an option as I like having the larger preview on mobile but don't want random porn while I scroll out in the world lol. Otherwise kbin has been nothing but wonderful. So glad to be here!
I disagree. I really think closing ourselves off to a bunch of places goes against the spirit of the fediverse. I want to be getting content from a lot of places which I can then filter out and control myself, and I feel like kbin supports that mindset well. I understand why some would want to defederate and close themselves off, but I don't want kbin.social turning into beehaw. If you're looking for a more controlled instance, join them
These platforms are still pretty early in their infancy and I don't think they were quite mature enough to take on this sudden influx of users (through no fault of anyone). There's going to be some growing pains but we'll get through it and this platform will get better from it
Looks like #Lemmy and #Kbin keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the #threadiverse — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉
@csolisr@GoatJamesAz@rysiek what I'm wondering is how compatible these are? Lemmy and kbin, but also those with mastodon. Can I somehow subscribe to lemmy topics on mastodon?
When I visit kbin.social, I see new posts regularly. On other servers posts stay on the frontpage for multiple days. This is also true if I switch their sorting to "hot". So that is probably not the difference....
That's the magic of ActivityPub! It's a federation standard that Fediverse services utilize to sync data. That's why you can also view Mastodon posts on kbin (and elsewhere).
Their post announcing it, has comments disabled. I have been going on reddit looking for polls to vote "yes" to continue to participate in the blackout. This was kind of a bummer....
Yeah, I'm basically done. I log in every couple of days to just kind of keep tabs on things and then log back out - it's gotten particularly unpleasant as it feels like the active users on bigger subs are now largely trollish and inflammatory. (Obviously running the risk of being trollish and inflammatory myself by saying that.) I've deleted Apollo from my phone, and am mostly focused on figuring our Kbin and the Fediverse.
Over the last few days, it seems that filtering by Hot or Active just makes me see the same posts I've seen over the last few days (stealing memes meme and $4k fridge)....
The problem with kbin is that navigating to individual subscribed "magazines" is a shit experience. You have to go into your settings. Also why is it called magazine? It just doesn't match with any mental concepts IMHO.

Same discussion all over again. (This is not a “dunk” or anything. It’s a valid concern.)
It’s about fair use as much as anything. After all, it’s always been possible (and allowed) to quote (short bits of) and link back to web pages from all over the internet. (There are rules too it, of course.)
I thought I'd never want to leave that party... the smell of shit is too strong though, and I'm never going back. I'm marching into kbin with a better party hat!
This tiny tricycle stall selling steamed buns in Sungai Chua, Kajang has been operating for decades, I’ve been enjoying it since I was a kid and am happy to report that it’s still as tasty as my childhood memories.
The buns are made with time-consuming traditional methods that make it taste MUCH better than most of the pau available out there.
Here’s a video about the old uncle who owns the stall:
@cendawanita@rakyat it will most probably never be possible to keep track of all posts worth to find their way to a magazine - that's why kbin magazines should be tagged properly
Ok, #RSSFeed being built into both #Kbin and #Lemmy makes moving a lot easier as part of the #redditmigration just point the feed at the rss for Magazine (Kbin) or Community (Lemmy) and read away in your RSS feed reader of choice.
@testing Why I think I'd like to see #Kbin use Magazine specific #RSS feed files. Right now it looks like it has a sitewide RSS function that just pulls the data from a database, but then the #RSSFeed generated all are named a generic kbin.social even though the data properly displays for the Magazine feed. Right now, ANY magazine you add to a RSS feed reader will have the generic kbinservername Title. That feed seems correct though. You can just rename the feed kbin.social magASEAN

Playing around on smaller platforms like kbin, Lemmy, and squabbles this week has been the most enjoyable time I've spent on forums in YEARS. I had no idea just how toxic and unhappy I was with reddit until I got away from it all.
I've peaked my head in a few times to see how things are going over there and every time I noticed how unhappy I was being there. I even noticed myself becoming more defensive, toxic, and hostile the longer I spent on there. I'm done with all of it.
Is there an option to move the magazine description to the top of the page, so i finite scrolling doesnt continuously push the unsubscribe or subscribe buttons further and further down? if not, could this be implemented as an option?
@Lols The magazine description etc. seems to be a sidebar if your window width is high enough. Not saying your problem is invalid, ofc, but it may only be an issue on mobile web. Edit: removed imgur link, the upload to kbin did work after all
Holy fucking shit, even though the restore is bad enough on its own, the evidence that reddit has not deleted this data even though GDPR would compel them so is even more damning
That lawsuit is fucking incoming, especially with the badwill they've accumulated this past month

Almost 5K Pirates migrated to lemmy. We're now 4th in lemmy communities browser! (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
Incredible growth. just goes to show how little we needed to be in Reddit....
Kbin.social passes 30k Monthly Active Users
It's still tiny numbers in the scheme of things, but also quite a big number for a site that had ~30 users this time last month....
Spam and porn are flooding kbin already

Why does the frontpage of kbin.social work so much better than any other server?

Is there a way to see kbin microblogs from Lemmy?
This has probably already been asked before, but:...
Filtering by New seems to be the best way to view Lemmy.
Over the last few days, it seems that filtering by Hot or Active just makes me see the same posts I've seen over the last few days (stealing memes meme and $4k fridge)....
What is one thing that you miss the most about reddit?
I miss that i could google something, write reddit in the end and the results would be honest and not ads or trash
