I really think #Kbin and #Pixelfed will and should work really well together.
For the memes. and I mean that!
Imagine following a meme subreddit -- directly! -- from your Instagram account, or an Instagram meme page -- directly! -- from Reddit, and not by a reposter account.
Now with the Fediverse (and the #Threadiverse), this is reality.
Long live the Fediverse, and long live the Threadiverse!
#Lemmy now has 135,369 accounts. That is tracking with my expectations.
But while #Kbin had ~7,000 accounts yesterday, it’s just shot up to 30,930 accounts today.
While Lemmy is the 5th most used server software on the Fediverse, Kbin is now in 10th place and it’s growing at a faster rate than Lemmy.
A few days ago, I predicted that the #RedditMigration would result in 150,000-300,000 new accounts being created on the Fediverse. That expectation has already been met.
This #RedditMigration is fundamentally changing the course of the Fediverse. It’s moved the Fediverse from being primarily about microblogging to having more eclectic use cases.
While the #TwitterMigration validated that decentralized social media can appeal to millions of people, the #RedditMigration has validated that decentralized social media has man varied applications – both in the software and use case sense.
You don't have a lemmy account, but kbin gets content from lemmy pushed to it. So you can subscribe to subs that are on Lemmy. That doesn't mean you can't sub to the kbin equivalent; in due time, both may have a memes sub. But if you prefer lemmy over the kbin, you can see and interact with that lemmy content from here on kbin. You don't need to be on Lemmy to do it, the instances are federated.
Likewise, say in the future a sports-only instance is created. It exists solely for sports headlines across all the leagues of the world. It is way better than content on kbin. If kbin federates with that group, you can see and interact with that content.
Say there is a group that doesn't meet your instances ideals. They like to be inflammatory and provocative because they can. Your instance can not federate with them, so you won't see that content when viewing the All section of your instance. Likewise, they won't be able to interact with content you post. This prevents brigading and intermingling of groups that would only argue and conflict.
You can enjoy all the content of any federated instance from whatever platform you want.
I have no idea what’s going on myself honestly lol. I just made a Kbin account so I can see and comment on this thread even though it’s a thread that came from lemmy it looks like considering it states (lemmy.world). I’m confused why I’m seeing this thread. Was it shared to the Kbin server? And why can’t I comment and upvote posts on lemmy.one for example? Shouldn’t I be able to due to everything being connected in the fediverse?
Kbin is federated with a bunch of the lemmy servers as well. If you look at the address of the post it's kbin/m(agazine)/lemmyworld@lemmy.world, so we're seeing a post from the LemmyWorld community (called magazines on kbin) on the lemmy server https://lemmy.world/
I promise it makes sense after a while lol
edit: the users of lemmy can also see what we say over here on kbin because kbin and lemmy talk to each other. This post lives on that lemmy instance
For a sub that’s supposed to promote Reddit alternatives, there sure is a lot of pessimism on there. I see so many people dismissing Lemmy and kbin already for being too inaccessible, the UI is clunky, it’s hard to pick up etc and saying these sites will never take off. But why? Of course a platform in its infancy will have...
Lemmy suffers for the tankie sentiments (i.e. pro-Putin and pro-CCP) of the founder and major instances. Kbin has the benefits of Lemmy without those drawbacks.
There are a ton of places that want to be the next reddit and everyone is trying to get everyone else to migrate to their platform.
None are ready yet and each have concerns. Lemmy, Kbin, and fediverse platforms have been dominating a lot of the discussion but they aren’t Reddit and they probably never will be (especially not by July 1st).
You have a lot of confusion and frustration that there just isn’t another Reddit out there yet. To all those I say that Reddit didn’t happen overnight and it’s all going to take time.
After years of using reddit, i finally deleted everything including my account there. Personally, i am not affected by the api prices, BUT, i couldn't live with me supporting people, who see their userbase, moderators and creators as nothing but noise. The point i'm making? Greetings Lemmy. I joined a few days ago and i'm here...
@jerry@derek
I have not used swarm since the container wars.
It seems that kbin needs the .env just to build the OCI, which means that there's no (easy) way to build a generic image that would work on different installs...
I was wondering why I couldn't find one anywhere, now I know.
I don't know if they are seeing this though. This microblog seems to have been federated here automatically from the inclusion of the "fediverse" tag. Going to the original post on the source instance your reply is not there. I don't think mastodon is federating with kbin at this point. https://mstdn.social/@noellemitchell/110549368670979390
Do you know there's a #fediverse alternative to Amazon-owned #Goodreads? #BookWyrm is a social network for tracking your reading, writing reviews, and discovering what to read next. You can follow and interact with users on different #BookWyrm instances and on #Mastodon. You can import from a Goodreads CSV export. You can create...
@Rainbright@bookstodon@Remillard Bookwyrm works fantastically as a GoodReads alternative! It just doesn't federate quite as well as it could (across different platforms), but that's no big deal. I can read, follow, etc from Mastodon no problem, Takahē misses some posts, and I've not tried from kbin yet (the instance I'm on is having federation issues).
There was a post about how beehaw was defederating from shitjustworks and lemmy.world about 6 hours ago. Are we involved in that, as are we a subset of lemmyworld?...
I actually don't think it's unfortunate, but mostly because the technology needs a shakedown period. Having some barriers that will keep out less technically savvy, or even just the less motivated to learn, allows the people that are more invested to work out the kinks and build something valuable.
Think of the coming months and years as the incubation period that Reddit had before the great exodus from Digg made it a much more mainstream place on the web. The only reason all of the people fleeing Digg went to Reddit is because it already existed with its own community that was (mostly) able to help absorb and train the incoming waves.
We've seen the same thing on Lemmy and Kbin, where people that had already been around are helping others adjust. Eventually the user experience, the differences and similarities between instances, probably some consolidation and splits of communities between and across instances... all of that will be happening as more and more people join.
(If I'm being honest, I would be perfectly fine with some of these barriers remaining in place forever. I don't necessarily need to interact with a billion people to meet my news, hobby and curiosity needs.)
Just a quick and dirty userscript to add some features I feel are super important. I'll probably look into creating some real PRs, but I figure the devs are probably in "put out fires" mode right now....
Saw you post this last night but couldn't get around to testing it until today. Works great! I needed the collapse function, but showing the source domain is a great bonus and adds clarity to kbin.
I mean don't get me wrong, its cool a lot of subs have and still are participating in the blackout, but I think it wouldve been better to link a new home for the subreddits participating somewhere in the private message. Show spez, hey if you dont change, we aren't going to use your site (or use it less).
Same with Lemmy. I think kbin and Lemmy are good because they're relatively uncomplicated. Reddit's been adding junk for years which has bloated out the new site and app significantly. They spend a long time and lots of money developing some NFT thing for example.
I am so sorry if this is not the appropriate place to post this here. I have tried the last few days to get kBin to federate the above listed community. If this is the wrong way to go about it, please respectfully let me know and I will promptly fix it. Thank you!...
Edit: also just lemme know if you want to help moderate! I have little experience managing a community and am not the best person for the job, I just wanted somewhere to post full-size genart gifs
@podatus yeah the kinks are still being worked out... the reddit exodus has put a huge load on the devs and servers
I made a new account because I miss reddit style social media and I needed my fix... my ideal situation would be to port this account to kbin so I can keep my followers
they haven't implemented server migration yet though
since it's a core fediverse feature, I imagine it is coming soon enough
Technically you can follow from masto, but you'll miss the threads (for now)
Confused on how to navigate to the homepage on mobile
When navigating kbin on desktop, clicking the kbin logo at the upper left brings me to the homepage....
language_not_allowed 🤨 WTF?
This is what I wrote....

What’s with the cynicism towards Lemmy on r/RedditAlternatives and Reddit in general?

Anyone else a little disappointed how the blackout is going?
