@golgaloth given that Labor has reinstated the Methane Led Recovery I would have to say the anti climate action lobbying is definitely working. #fossilfuels#labor#alp
So the RTA's own modelling showed the Rozelle Interchange would be a traffic disaster—but generating more toll road trips for Transurban was more important.
"The [NSW Roads and Traffic Authority] finalised the first business case for the WestConnex tunnel project in June 2013, with the help of road designers from around the world.
"[Paul Forward, a former CEO of the RTA] said the initial concept did not include the Rozelle Interchange.
...
"In 2014, an expert review group was formed to assess these plans.
"Mr Forward said it was at this point that TfNSW bureaucrats began to question the connectivity provided by the design.
"The RTA's former director of traffic Chris Ford told the inquiry that 15 alternative designs were modelled.
"Mr Ford said the modelling found that another motorway leading to the Anzac Bridge would cause congestion.
"'The issues that we see today were very clearly established in the modelling in 2014,' he said.
"In November 2015, after Mr Forward and Mr Ford were dismissed, TfNSW updated the WestConnex business case to include the tunnel to the Anzac Bridge, despite the congestion concerns raised by the modelling.
"In 2016, Transport for NSW updated the business case a second time ... creating a tunnel linking the Iron Cove Bridge to the Anzac Bridge."
...
"In 2018, the NSW government sold its 51 per cent stake in the Sydney Motorway Corporation, the body responsible for operating WestConnex, to Transurban for $9 billion.
"Mr Forward said the final design would generate a larger number of toll trips than previous options."

This is the inevitable result of an electoral system that establishes the dominance of two similar parties (a #Uniparty ) allied with permission to accept huge amounts of money to these two parties but no-one else. We can see this with new electoral laws in Victoria, which are now being emulated in Canberra to hamstring Independents and minor parties. https://youtu.be/7FLqYpD6eYw?si=smGlZmiT2fsfuC1r
I see another employer has gone to the wall and said to employees: "You wont get paid your entitlements. Too bad, so sad."
So I'm starting to think that maybe employers over a certain size, say 10 full-time equivalents, should be required to pay into an Employee Entitlements Insurance scheme.*
Yes, I know it will drive the Libs and the various chambers of commerce berserk. That's what makes me think it's probably a good idea.
“What we’re doing with this piece of legislation, this important piece of legislation,” Giles says, “is to fill a very significant loophole, a loophole that a small cohort of people who have no basis upon which to remain in Australia, who are refusing to cooperate with efforts to effect their removal.”
"There are words missing in these sentences. The greater holes are decency and compassion. Labor weakened reforms on climate change this week and gave up on the rights of queer children. It refined its punishment of people seeking asylum. Whatever point there is to being in power, it surely is impossible to see now. There is just an orthodontic smile and the slumped form of various ministers who might once have had a spine."
Many thousands gathered today in Hyde Park on #Gadigal land. Members of both the NSW & federal governments had said this event ought to be prevented from occurring, including #ALP Premier #ChrisMinns.
Speakers included Aboriginal, Palestinian & Jewish leaders. They spoke of the horrific violence against the population of #Gaza, and linked this to #colonial violence in these lands (amongst other points). #Antisemitism was vigorously and repeatedly condemned as antithetical to the #AntiRacist convictions of the rally's organisers, the very convictions that lead many people into #solidarity with oppressed #Palestinians.
Mass protest rallies always bring the risk of violence from outside agitators & troublemakers. Sure enough, present on the fringes of the crowd this afternoon were numerous groups of intimidating armed figures in dark clothing, members of a notoriously #racist organisation, responsible for many violent deaths & injuries, and for causing countless incidents at a variety of political gatherings. It's an old organisation that has not (as far as I'm aware) ever publicly renounced its historical participation in genocidal violence. Fortunately, I believe today's gathering proceeded without the #NSWpolice stirring up any further trouble.
Headline quote says that the Australian #ALP government is "missing half the equation" when it comes to taking action to mitigate climate disruption.
While there is federal support for expanding cleaner forms of energy, the Australian government continues to approve new coal and gas projects, and even create new forms of indirect #DirtyEnergySubsidies (such as federal funding for the #MiddleArm industrial hub in #Darwin, representing a substantial gift to the #FossilGas industry). Hence, they are "missing half the equation".
But I would argue that they are missing most of the equation, because stopping the increase of climate-disrupting greenhouse gases from being emitted by winding down the #DirtyEnergy industry as rapidly and humanely as possible is the single biggest aspect of #ClimateAction. Doing so will require replacement forms of energy (and all kinds of shifts in how energy is used), yes, but this is actually a secondary goal required to achieve the main one: an end to humanity's dependence on dirty energy ASAP.
openSUSE Tumbleweed makes for a good desktop and even one for gaming, but for a workstation or server, you're going to want either SUSE Leap or Enterprise.
Sadly, SUSE is really trying to push their immutable systems with transactional updates. And unfortunately, that will soon include openSUSE Leap.
I will give credit where credit is due. SUSE will allow some binaries to run from /home, but /opt is questionable. The development seems to be on the fence on that.
@vwbusguy@johanneskastl@sfalken There will be no SLES 16 and #ALP will definitely offer a non-transactional variant as well. Whichever will become the default, will probably be a source of much bike-shedding in the months to come 😉
