All of my most serious problems in the last decade have been directly caused by the housing shortage in the Bay Area.

It's so hard to be at home. I'm in my backyard where the bad roommate never goes but it's like I have a constant ache moving across my back & chest. When I'm out & about & busy I can stop thinking about it but when I'm home alone... 😮‍💨

@divya I hate the framing of that. We should be limiting oil production because of climate change. This just demonstrates they'd make more money if they limited it even more. Going car-free should be incentived.

Don’t ask ‘what happened to you’ as it can make some people relive their traumas," she penned. "Instead, wait for them to share their story with you when they feel ready. And if they never tell you, that is their personal choice. Respect that. Disabled people don’t only exist to talk about our disabilities."

@msquebanh yep I think this is the general way one should handle trauma of any kind. There's so many painful things in the world and we're not always going to be in a space to talk about them - from a minor thing to a major we need to give people space to talk at their own pace.

I got real mad at a journalist who described e-bikes like they all cost $5000+ a couple years ago because I've had 2 e-bikes that each cost under $1000 and regular bikes that cost the same.
I am absolutely lusting after fancy e-bikes that cost more than $5000 but that's like.. a high luxury e-bike that can fit my golden retriever in the basket in the front for rides across the Golden Gate Bridge to campgrounds. I remain annoyed that those are depicted as normal - they're a totally different class of bike.

Hail Freya, it's Friday!
For this week’s I'm reviving an age-old pagan debate.
This is a two-part question:

Do you think cursing/hexing is an acceptable practice?

Have you done it?

thesquirrelfish,
@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social avatar

@Cat_LeFey
I was talking to my mom about this and possibly cursing/banishing a bad roommate I have that refuses to move out. Mom says she thought the cursing would be unhealthy for my soul/karma/chi/energy and I agree, but I think an eviction would be at least as bad.
Our souls don't just suffer from the things we know as magic or power, but from the whole of the energy we put into the world whether it be in our day to day practical or in our spiritual practices.

@vfrmedia @Aviva_Gary @StillIRise1963 @crazybutable @LenW @_L1vY_ it's already happening. Road rage shootings are pretty common, and parking spot shootings are a thing. When I was bartending in Austin a bartender down the street had a gun pulled on them for cutting somebody off...

@vfrmedia @Aviva_Gary @StillIRise1963 @crazybutable @LenW @_L1vY_ re-reading and I realized cutting people off could have meant in traffic in that context... I meant the bartender said the person couldn't have another drink because they were too drunk, and the drunk pulled out a gun and demanded another drink.

@intermobility @jackofalltrades @thomasgoldberg @immibis @gerrymcgovern @tobi82 @SheDrivesMobility @uanrah we have to do both - vote for taxes on things that cause climate change & stop giving money to the corporations that are causing the most climate change. Carbon footprint doesn't really capture that, but neither does ignoring the impacts of our individual decisions. Who we bank with doesn't fit in the old carbon footprint model but absolutely makes a difference to the future climate. Similarly I only vote every few years, but when I bike to work or use a local credit union instead of a big bank:

  1. I'm not giving money to a corporation that will be used to lobby my government against climate change
  2. I'm making a visible choice in my own neighborhood
  3. I'm making it easier for other people to make the same choices
    Like not everybody can do everything, but we should all be doing something.

Not going to lie, I'm skeptical. Very skeptical. But there is a chance CO2 emissions will have peaked in 2023.

"We find there is a 70% chance that emissions start falling in 2024 if current clean technology growth trends continue and some progress is made to cut non-CO2 emissions."

Regardless of if it actually happens, it is important to recognize the progress we are making, which are more rapid than most realize and many predicted. There is hope.

thesquirrelfish,
@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social avatar

@rythur
I'm not sure what kind of shock that would be - we've shown that the current system is remarkably immune to the real world. Which is kind of why I think it's gotta be a lot of individual actions for now, until we can get the cultural acceptance of punitive actions for climate arson. As long as we continue to self justify our own bad behavior we're going to tolerate bad behavior at scale by elites.
@_noelamac_ @FantasticalEconomics

thesquirrelfish,
@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social avatar

@rythur
I think the problem is much bigger than that - as long as a few people are both influential and able to insulate themselves we're not going to get change on climate policy.

That's why I don't think climate policy can be separated from inequality, individual empowerment/equality/rights/influence on government, accountability and corporate governance.

As long as people are buying gas, Exxon execs are going to be able to influence every election.

We have to either get rid of the influence or get rid of the insulation to get change.

See, I think you're being overly optimistic here - some factories will shut down, but meanwhile others will be reopening and being built new as long as there's any one with any kind of currency capable of going back & forth. It's definitely possible the location of the factories will change, but as long as there are rich elites with money there will be factories... And those elites can helicopter away from any given disaster. They're insured.
@rythur @FantasticalEconomics @_noelamac_

thesquirrelfish,
@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social avatar

@GhostOnTheHalfShell
I think it will be less profitable, but it's going to be a return to the early corporations and treasure ships of the colonial days - lots of big investments, many of which will be unprofitable and fail, but a few of which will make people rich.
Yes, just in time economics isn't going to work any more, but it's not like we haven't had globalized unpredictable extractive economies before. Reading Vaclav Smil or conservative futurists you can see they have every intention of increasing GHG use and trying to insulate wealthy elites through a new version of colonial extractive policies.
If you're "good enough" you can get a visa into the protection of the US/EU, and we'll send military escorts to bring your tribute with you. Just expanding the Mediterranean refugee crisis to a global scale... And the products from Israel keep rolling in as the people of Gaza die.

That's the image of before we had a stable industrial base. I absolutely think housing values & everything that rests on them are going to tank but I think there's still going to be people producing things and there's still going to be shipping, and there's still going to be insurers.
Whether it's more like the 1700s with elites/external capital controlling it or something new is yet to be determined.

It's not that we're so different from other girls, or boys for that matter. We've had our brains so infiltrated by gender stereotypes and ideals from such a young age, that by the time we get old enough to realize we are unique humans with our own distinctive character, we feel like we need to shout this from the rooftops. Every person is unique, no matter the gender, some just get more of a chance to exercise the right of individualism than others.

thesquirrelfish,
@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social avatar

@RickiTarr yep! I don't want other people's expectations & gendered laws & separate pay scales for women to be applied to me.

The tighter the rules on what a woman should be the less I want them to apply to me. I have no trouble with my body and feel very cis until I interact with people who have strict gendered social lives.

Oh, it's a party and all the men are in one room and all the women in another room? It's a woman only party? I'm supposed to be friends with the wife (known 5 years) but not the husband(known 20 years) because gender?

All of that just makes me want to nope out of being a woman... as long as I don't have to identify as a man or change anything about my gender presentation or body.

News is such a confused industry. In order for it to be successful, it needs the majority of people to find value in the news that it produces. Most people are not old, wealthy, straight, white, men, but most news stories are framed from that perspective, even when the framing is false and easily debunkable.

Most news rooms don't look anything close to the people that they need to buy their papers to have a sustainable business.

Failure is inevitable.

thesquirrelfish,
@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social avatar

@mekkaokereke yes! I think about this everytime I hear some kind of "stocks are up" bs repeated as if that's good news. No! That means wealth inequality is up and relative wages are down! That's bad for most people!

I remember an NPR story where they were like "energy companies in the Northeast reported lower than expected earnings this quarter as mild temperatures reduced energy consumption" as if that wasn't great news. People saved money and reduced their contributions to global warming!
