🌍 Heute ist der 22. Mai – Internationaler Tag der biologischen Vielfalt. 🌿
On this #biodiversityday:
The assumption that #biodiversity is a mere add-on and irrelevant for modern economies, is one of the most extreme sectarian ideologies I can think of. Unfortunately, it's still dominant in academic and business circles. The real thing: Human economies are a mere sub-set of the economy of nature, which is based on biodiversity. As long as economists don't make that their starting point, it will become increasingly difficult to sustain human civilization.
Most people (and evidently, AI) think that biodiversity is all above ground, where we can see it. Think again....most biodiversity is in the soil, and overwhelmingly microbial.

Happy #BiodiversityDay! From our archives, Mrunali Sundar speaks to Bangalureans who are passionate about opening their children's eyes to the blossoming biodiversity in the city and beyond:
Within my own lifetime, the last 50 years, nearly 80% of the CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels, and close to 60 percent of all GHG emissions have been released.
There's been a near 70% decline in populations of existing wildlife species; and across the 8 million animal and plant species on earth, the human-induced extinction rate is now estimated at tens to hundreds of times greater than natural rates.
#BiodiversityDay reminds us that the profound crises we confront are just different sides of the same coin, and that our future is truly in our hands. The planet doesn't need us: we are the ones who rely on it for all the air we breathe, the water we drink, the resources we need. That's why our choices matter more today than ever: the path to a better future lies through these crises.
Reading all the bad news and statistics on #BiodiversityDay often makes me feel helpless. I am afraid to resign myself. And if many would resign, where would we end up?
I love what Dr Jane Goodall said: "Let’s think about how we can create a different and respectful relationship with the #environment and with animals, and a new, more #sustainable#economy."
Am reposting this #HistoricalEcology 🧵 I did during #COP15 in Dec’22 - a brief world tour through West and East Africa, Amazonia, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Europe, N America - enoy! I do believe #IntermediateDisturbance is the way forward
French local authorities are putting biodiversity on the map with Biodiversity Atlases — a tool to chart local habitats & integrate biodiversity protection into policy planning!
