I am so tired of hearing about the "privilege & #ableism of the bike community" as an excuse for not investing in protected low-stress bike infrastructure. Those assholes buzzing you on a path (or when you're in the bike lane on streets with no sidewalks) are #drivers on bikes, not members of my bike community. I'm taking my kid to a doctor appt and #CarSupremacy is squatting on 130ft and 65ft swaths of asphalt while we share scraps of space with people walking their dogs. #BikeTooter

There is not a path to reduced #ClimateChange emissions and a sustainable #transportation system that allows our species to survive #GlobalWarming while maintaining #CarSupremacy with its glut of empty passing lanes and free #parking where all options to choose #eBikes or #transit have been cut off by walls of traffic (cars always either at a standstill or moving at deadly speeds, averaging 20mph.) Many people need to change their plans and stop driving, many car lanes need to be repurposed.

Either you adopted a policy to immediately prioritize people and tell cars to get bent, or you're just stalling and propping up #CarSupremacy while talking about "safety" or wishing for "safety funding" that won't reduce the number or speed of cars. What is it going to take to get through to elected officials and progressive transportation planners, that they're working with a machine that's been designed to build freeways through poor neighborhoods and coerce anyone who could afford it into cars? A machine made of #trafficEngineers and #police which then accreted a century of CYA, cultural, legal, and bureaucratic armor against change? Giving the DOT more money for safety won't ever get us out of #carSupremacy. It's designed to not.
@activetowns we need to rethink the notion that "better road designs and public transit will require significant up-front investment" and learn to see the 3-5 redundant overbuilt car streets that are available to serve any given trip vs the unbuilt bike/walk networks that are largely disconnected by the #carSupremacy of these 4-lane stroads. Network-wide quick-build bike connections and bus/turn-only the outside lanes of stroads by shifting operational funds to prioritize people, then iterate.
I'm having a hard time believing, not that a #transportation agency would come up with a plan that was to sweep the broken glass and gravel off of the sidewalks and leave it in the bike lanes for a few days before sweeping it up, just that it wasn't done with intentional malice or disdain toward people on bikes.
