I've been awake for who knows how long. Since 2 hours before my alarm is set to go off, anyway. So, since I'm unwillingly awake, here's something further about , the tending-fundamentalist denomination I grew up in. Something I found out yesterday about the eldership of one of the local congregations.

A eldership, if you don't already know, is a group of men selected by the congregation to lead and make decisions for the congregation.

One advantage to growing up in the is that has always been a secular holiday (except when it gave the a chance to bitch about the ofc).

So I don't have around the winter holidays, thank the gods.

Wow… I can't recall how long it's taken, but tonight Whartson Hall reached the end of Masks of Nyarlathotep. Although I've played it before, I never made it very far into Egypt before meeting a grisly demise, so this has been quite a trip. Did we succeed in saving the world? Well, you'll have to check your newspapers for 1926 to find out (or just listen to the episode when we release it on Friday).

According to @RogerBW we played our first session of Masks of Nyarlathotep in September of 2018. There were pauses in the run, naturally, but five years later—and with two of the original characters heading into the finale—here we are. Huge thanks to @lordof1 for taking on the cyclopean task of GMing.

My friends, today I learned about a rather horrid condition called "the Jake Walk" that afflicted quite a number of people in 1930s America.

The ghastly details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaica_ginger

"In 1930, large numbers of Jake users began to find they were unable to use their hands and feet.
Some victims could walk, but they had no control over the muscles which would normally have enabled them to point their toes upward. Therefore, they would raise their feet high with the toes flopping downward, which would touch the pavement first followed by their heels. The toe first, heel second pattern made a distinctive "tap-click, tap-click" sound as they walked. This very peculiar gait became known as the jake walk and the jake dance and those afflicted were said to have jake leg, jake foot, or jake paralysis. Additionally, the calves of the legs would soften and hang down and the muscles between the thumbs and fingers would atrophy."

I would love to see this show up in a Call of Cthulhu module.

This morning, I read Bryce Lynch's latest review of a Miskatonic Repository scenario (spoiler alert, he hated it). He made some great points about its, and by extension, most CoC scenarios', verbosity and user unfriendly layout. That never bugged me much b/c quite frankly, I'm used to it, and I've always been able to memorize tons of info. But now I'm imagining CoC scenarios utilizing layouts/formats used by modern trad games like and .

nukehavoc,

@lextenebris @Tim_Eagon @NinjaDebugger I ran a one-shot at my local game convention earlier this month.

Originally, I figured I'd run one of the many pamphlet scenarios, but my brain had a hard time with the lack of structure and plot info.

I ended up writing my own scenario because 1) it was easier to hold the scenario in my brain that way and 2) it helped me understand the rules.

nukehavoc,
@nukehavoc@dice.camp avatar

@lextenebris @Tim_Eagon @NinjaDebugger That said, I was reading the anthology at the same time, which does a great job of packing narrative details
and timelines into its adventurers (I particularly liked its mystery-setup flowchart).

It led me to include less information in my notes than I usually would for a . It got me thinking about what my adventure should I decide to release it. Just how much detail would I need for it to make sense to others?

nukehavoc,
@nukehavoc@dice.camp avatar

@lextenebris @Tim_Eagon @NinjaDebugger All of which is to say ... I get how someone would look at a traditional mystery and think "too much!" while I'm reaching for my index cards to start understanding the mystery's flow (and thinking that's totally normal) while I look at a beautifully laid out, 1-page adventure and think ... "how the heck would I run this? I'll just make my own thing."

lextenebris,
@lextenebris@vivaldi.net avatar

@nukehavoc @Tim_Eagon @NinjaDebugger The pamphlet format is definitely not newbie friendly. Newbies will always need more infrastructure and framework in order to understand more of "how is this expected to work" so they can pull the switches and push the buttons of making the machine go.

Or, I suppose, technically I should say not newbies because some people really take to the structure and format incredibly well. Less is more for them. I tend to lean far harder that way naturally that a lot of people I know, which is why I find things like solo and journaling gaming to be so fascinating. I don't have a problem coming up with the filling parts. I never had a problem running more traditionally architected , which is part of the reason things like scenarios feel heavy to me. I'm going to have to ignore three quarters of it anyway.

But as a experience, the consumption of those COC scenarios is pleasurable and fun. I get why other people enjoy them. They are extended pieces of artistic work in and of themselves.
