#GreatAlbums1980s - #TheWaterboys – Fisherman's Blues (1988). In one of pop's sharpest left turns, M. Scott recast the Waterboys from big-audio spiritualists to mandolin-plucking folkies on this LP. Bits of the Big Music survive in "We Will Not Be Lovers" and "World Party" (the song). But the LP stakes its main claim in the driving folk balladry of "And a Bang on the Ear" and the infectious title track. A friend of mine called Scott's new genre "Heavy Wood." Perfect.
For this week's #MusicWomenWednesday, check out this amazing sounding album 'Melt the Honey' that comes out Friday. The band is PACKS, aka Madeline Link.
These songs have such a cool, lo-fi feel- they reminds me of early Beck songs or maybe quieter Sonic Youth or Sebadoh songs, with Link's cool, unaffected voice and some great lyrics. It's folky and catchy as hell.
'Melt the Honey' comes out Jan 19 (Friday) and it's definitely a contender for my top favorites of this year. Listen/grab it here:
The Roseline get through relationship difficulties in the most tender way (really) on their new song "I Was a Gun." At once familiar and iconic, The Roseline are one of the best bands in Americana right now.

"I think I owe a lot to Kirk Hammett because I learned a lot from him."
An excellent recording of our frantic version of #SuiteJudyBlueEyes by #CrosbyStillsandNash. The first half is a pretty straight cover but the second half is a bunch of kids throwing off a lot of piss and vinegar with wide open improv over a ground in E.
🎸 New Model Army - First Summer After [from the upcoming album 'Unbroken' (January 26th, 2024)]
"And when the madman stole the keys in the dark dead of the night
Our luck we couldn't believe, like a strange shift of the light
It’s the kindness of other people we have built our lives upon
It was the first summer after and the last summer before"
