Tbh, I'm on a proactively moderated server that has preemptively kept a lot of the worst folks from being able to reach us queers here, and the feedback from a handful of black users here is that #blahajzone has also been generally been harassment free in comparison to other servers they've been on.

Imo, it's actually not to hard as a queer or trans person to find #servers on the #fediverse that will protect you from harassment, but that it is harder to find servers that will also protect indigenous, black, Asian users from racist harassment. And too many queer white folks get a free pass for ignorance tbh, a privilege that many of us have had for far too long.

It's much the same on #Bluesky where I haven't been harassed for being #queer and trans - again there's large communities and plenty of allies - but anti-black racism has been in the spotlight again recently and the devs called out for lagging behind on safety and moderation features that bigots exploit for harassment campaigns.

Far too many fediverse projects are led by men, mostly white men, who are lionised, promoted and financed by another layer of mostly white men. They ultimately get the veto on minority protections.

jo,

@maloki No, they're hoping that those found on Oliphant's Tier0 blocklist are being blocked but can't seem to even locate a list available to view by users on firefish.social much like we have here on blahaj.zone and as do many mastodon servers. Unfortunately Misskey forks like and don't support the import of blocklists, though Iceshrimp is keen to implement that. I do understand why some servers keep their blocked list private - sometimes public or privately viewable blocklists have enraged the bigots and they then brigaded the server from other servers and encouraged more bigots to join them - but then that should be communicated somewhere newbies can find it.

One of the problems with inadequate search is that I hear echoes of something that happened but getting to the facts is really hard. I don't know that this has the positive effects on community culture that some people suggest. Fact-checking seems important.

So, uh, what happened with ?

csolisr,

The developer committed the grave mistake of:

  • hosting his repository in the same server as some alt-right developers (something he immediately amended as soon as he found it out, but you know, historic memory is eternal)
  • not block alt-right nodes in his main server, and even repost a link to a news post one such server made, without actually going and checking the profile first

And so, guilt by association applies, to the point of causing a fork of the fork already: https://iceshrimp.dev/iceshrimp/iceshrimp

As a bonus, there is a company already registered in the UK, so the rebrand was, in fact, legally necessary for .

Firefish is the hot new social platform in the Fediverse right now. The best news of all? It lets you move your posts and other data over with you.

So after Firefish comes Iceshrimp and I am so tired of Fedi drama bullshit y'all.

I'm not averse to Forks. I'm on one right now: Hajkey, a fork of Calckey. But, man, it's gotta be done for the right reasons and I'm not seeing alot of those from the Iceshrimp folks.

However, Firefish IS already trademarked so....there is kind of a point here? You can't grow on a name someone else is using.

Hey, is "Twitter" now free for use? Let's call ourselves that.

But yeah, seriously y'all, if anything is going to kill the Fedi it's the ability of devs to keep getting into playground squabbles.

I hope keeps developing for blahaj.zone and similar communities, particularly the long sought after features that never seem to arrive on the and become more important as greater adoption occurs and user culture changes - like the amount of transphobic users that Lemmy has brought here and the dev bros think this is progress. @maegul

Ultimately what I use depends on FEATURES. I don't care about fedidrama.

If Firefish develops features faster than Iceshrimp I'll switch.
If Iceshrimp develops features faster than Firefish I'll stay.

So FAR, I'm finding very hard to run my own dev version with Iceshrimp while with FF it's damn easy.

I might drop them both and use the one of my goddess since she's much better coder than I'll ever be, and she'll merge whatever's good from either anyway.

    We'll see.

I gotta admit, Misskey is kinda fun and fresh compared to the Calckey stuff. I feel like / / / whatever else forks all kinda went more for a focused, simple, English-language software while Misskey wanted to be different and have a little fun, not worrying about the people who say "THIS IS BLOATTTTT AAAAA"

So as it turns out, there is a new "commercial-free" #Misskey fork in the neighborhood, called #Iceshrimp. I like the intentions (except the whole "not infringing on UK trademarks", IP is bullshit), but… why "Iceshrimp"? That's an even stupider name than "Firefish"!

If there's anything I hate in symbols and branding, it's when you settle on one just because it's the opposite of something you hate. Like, why do so many autistic people want red to be the color that represents them? Only because Autism Speaks chose blue. I think that's bullshit.

The quest for purity in the Fediverse creates drama and fragmentation.

In short, / admins made odd decisions.

    • Pitching a name that creates confusion re: trademark (Firefox and more).
    • Moving their repo to a Gitlab hosted by alt-right people (resolved).
    • The main dev boosted a neutral post by an (alleged) harasser. Contradictory screenshots and clarifications circulate.

The project emphasizes it values diversity. But ways depart. And we have a new fork, .

    Uraael, (edited ) to random

If the Iceshrimp devs had launched focused purely on what they bring to the table I'd not have had any issue with them whatsoever. More forks that feed into the whole are always welcome.

But this whole "we're the outfit that LISTENS to our users" is sticking in my craw a bit. It feels petty, vindictive and kinda arrogant for an outfit that has just started. Oh, and you're going to accept every user request you receive, are you? Of course you arent. No dev can or does. And it really is rude to suggest that the Firefish devs haven't listened to anything after the months of hard, hard work they've been visibly putting in to make things better or even just keep things running.

I mean, which of the following statements reads better:

A: We're not like Twitter. We're going to be better than them in terms of user safety.
B: We're focused on putting your safety at the forefront of everything we do.

It's B, of course. The tonally-neutral, non-accusative, wholly positive statement.

Also, if you don't want to be Firefish or associate with Firefish don't name yourselves using their naming convention? It's a bit like hating Twitter but calling yourself "Tooter". (I'm aware of Firefox/Iceweasel before anyone feels the need to educate) You're describing yourselves as a "Fork of Misskey" so why drop the *key convention? And which codebase did you actually fork off? If it was Misskey then that makes the name choice doubly confusing? As well as being weirdly close to what Firefish have done it's also really lacking originality. Firefish is too but this was your chance to be better than that and you blew it in favour of a cheap shot.

I saw the spat between the lead devs of both 'fish and 'shrimp prior to shrimp's launch and ignored it as yet more Dev Drama, but this very much feels like that bad feeling spilling over into Shrimp's work, an attitude that, in concert with other recent attacks on the 'Fish devs, is now leading some to recommend leaving Fish to go to Shrimp or repeat vindictive Shrimp statements in their own messaging. It's absurd how frikkin bitchy the Fediverse can be sometimes, and we still flatter ourselves that we're better than Centralised networks or the behaviour of their spiteful billionaire owners.

    Iceshrimp's Project "Anti-goals":

    No Flashy marketing

There is nothing wrong with having a professional approach to your work or using some of the tools of corporate environments, especially if you're keeping your hand in to ensure you can still be employed by those same outfits. The new name launch was an event that had Calckey users buzzing.> No Commercialization of any kind

There hasn't been any in Firefish. Look up the word?

These aren't things just plucked out of the ether; these are both specific criticisms of Firefish that have been aired by some, privately held by others, written as a project descriptor.

I'm aware the devs of my current home Instance have made the choice to disassociate from Firefish in favour of the Shrimp codebase, and I approve of their decision based as it is on the commitment to deliver more safety for their very marginalised community, though I do feel the loss of Firefish DNA-sharing is a real shame. However, I personally won't be recommending Iceshrimp to anyone until they can focus on not being passive-aggressive jerks about what/who they are very clearly and obviously reacting against. Projects that succeed stand on their own merits; shitting on an adversary to make yourself look better is the realm of Politicians and Corporate Bullying.
