After a long long hiatus, I'm trying to finally get back a bit into / development a bit.
Started by tackling with a minor nuisance I had with @kasts, which didn't display the URL of a link so far when hovering it.
Once https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kasts/-/merge_requests/186 is merged, that should be a thing of the past.

This implementation is 90% blatantly copied from @neochat - that's the power of 😊

Fedora KDE Spin - Wifi Bug.

In the taskbar, by the clock, click on a WiFi of your choice and enter you password.

For example, mine was called 01_localhost and the password was Hi_0007

Go to System Settings
Go to Wi-Fi & Networking
Select (highlight) you listed Wi-Fi

On the General Information tab, check All user may connect to this network. Changed Metered to NO. On the Wi-Fi tab, change MTU to 1408. On Wi-Fi Security tab, change to WPA3 Personal. On the IPv6 tab, disable. Now click, Apply.

1st, notice you can NOT click on the export selected connection.

2nd, if you reboot, you will NOT be connected. Notice in System Settings (KDE) to connect.

3rd, if you click the + and manually add the Wi-Fi, still no option to connect.

4th, if you connect using the icon in your taskbar, by the clock (again), you will connect and a new copy of your Wi-Fi will be listed in System Setting each time you do this (after reboot). - You never reboot with a working connection and need to enter your password each time.

continued...

I have repeated this bug on both an upgrade from v39 to v40 and later on a fresh installation of v40 Fedora KDE Spin and Ultramarine Linux (both distros).

It also decided to try, Universal Blue, Aurora, an immutable distro, also Fedora KDE Spin based, with the same results (bug). I configured the network during setup (during the installation processes).

irfan, to Steamdeck

This is wonderful news but seeing the list of patrons, why does not join the sponsorship programme though? - I know (or I think at least) that they often/occasionally sponsor (as an org, or devs) to do some work for them, and I'm not denying that they contribute a lot through funds/code to /, but seeing that the comes shipped with (which I still think is a really smart decision) and since Plasma is a huge part of the Steam Deck (literally half of the software exp), it'd be great to see Valve commit to a recurring sponsorship programme to the KDE folks.

They certainly have the money for it, surely. I hope this will be true someday.

Hi all. Hoping there are some users out there that can help me out. I'm using an old computer, not the one I mentioned in my previous posts, but a different one, and isn't speaking. I originally installed Mate, but Orca was freezing a lot, so I switched my to . It seemed like a lot of things were inaccessible, though, so I decided to try . I installed Gnome, chose GDM as the display manager, and restarted the computer. Now, Orca works on the login screen but nowhere else. It seems to be running, and when I run "orca --replace" in the terminal, I get an error about something only working with X11. I've been able to tell that by scanning the screen with on my . I need to get Orca up and running again so I can use my computer. What's the best way to do this, preferably without sighted help, as my mom and stepdad aren't good with .

Well I guess you'd substitute "focus your attention" for "look" and "notice" or "find" for "see"...

pitbuster,

@RareBird_15 you should be able to pick the type of session on GDM and there should be one called Gnome on Xorg or Gnome on X11 @mastoblind @main

Linux, to KDE

An "old school" Linux user, the same user who will try to get you, a Windows user, to try to use the terminal for everything, comparable to trying to get you to use Microsoft PowerShell for everything, will tell you Gnome is this wonderful graphical user interface (GUI).

You want KDE Plasma. Trust me. Most of the basic settings and point and click functions, you're seeking, are not going to be in Gnome by default, out of the box. Can it be customized and included with some effort? Sure, anything can be changed with some effort. But as a newbie, I'm assuming the word "effortless" is something you may favor a little more.

Linux,

That same, "old school" Linux user is likely someone who told you: "Linux Mint is great for newbies" I am sorry to say, you were incorrectly informed.

Have you ever tried to make a copy of a copy? That's Linux Mint. It starts from Debian which is forked to Ubuntu, which is later forks to Mint Linux. You have far too many upstream developments, and like any software, occasionally bugs happen, but in Mint it happens more frequently because you have the issue from Debian or Ubuntu or Mint or a random combination of one or more into a "hot mess".

On top of this, most of the people within the Linux Mint community are "old school" users who will insist you learn and use the terminal for everything, within that "hot mess" of a broken up system. That is comparable to a 1st computer user, being told to use Microsoft PowerShell for everything. Sure, you can, but would you want to?

There are far better alternatives, for example, Ultramarine Linux (I suggest the KDE build).

1st, all the drivers and firmware and non-free media codecs and repos, are already included. You don't have to set any of that up. 2nd, if you know how to use an app store, you can use the one provided with Ultramarine Linux. 3rd, everything from adding a printer to changing user settings or setting up an optional firewall, DNS, VPN, etc. just with a mouse click. 4th, go ahead and download an RPM package, and double-click, it will install just as easily as a Windows Setup File.

Ultramarine Linux is just 1 out of many possible distros you can use, without all the nonsense. There really are better alternatives than Linux Mint.

"But... but.... I used the Debian Edition of Mint"

Which they hardly support. The problem with their Debian Edition is they make their modification and then that's it. You're getting all your patches from Debian, which sounds good on principle, as it doesn't have so much upstream, but those modifications which Mint made are outside Debian, and whatever may be broken, stays broken, long-term, and are exclusive to Mint Debian, while they focus on their Ubuntu based copy. And of course, it is the same "old school" community that want you, a newbie, who knows nothing, and wanted an easy experience, to use the terminal for everything.

As a newbie, Mint Linux or Linux Mint (however you call it), is not the newbie friendly Linux distro you have been led to believe. I can build Linux from source, something I don't expect a newbie to do, but even I have found Mint frustrating at times, because it is a "hot mess".

But I digress. There are (many) better alternatives out there and if your 1st experience with Linux was Linux Mint and you gave up shortly afterward, I can understand as to why.

IN before the Linux Mint groupies claim how wrong I am, but YOU, who gave up after trying Mint, decide for yourself, by trying something else.

@Linux
If you use LMDE, what the heck have to do Ubuntu in all this?
Let me remind you, ultramarin is based in another distro that is based in another distro too ......
Why would you want to use the terminal? cause when you break your system, the terminal usually is the only way to fix it.
Anyway, I'm glad that you found a distro that suits you. Enjoy it!!

I’m using on one of my laptops and I’m just a bit bummed that we won’t be getting in this month’s semiannual OS release and would have to wait for the October Kubuntu 24.10 version. Then again, I remember the huge uproar that accompanied the release of Plasma 5 a decade ago, so I think I’m okay with waiting a few months for Plasma 6 (and especially the Wayland support) to be extra stable before upgrading.

Nice thing about : if you rename a file, and try to use the name of a file that already exists, the file manager asks if you want to replace that file.

Which, yes, is exactly what I want. Most file managers won't let me do that, but this one will.

I ❤️ KDE.

I love my new setup (Fedora and KDE plasma)
It all feels so nice and clean. and new.
And smooth.

Too bad I'm only gonna use it once a week :(

Oh, and Powershell. I love powershell.
It's my default shell now.

@kohelet Fedora just works very well :) I've been running it for years now, and since leaving my job at Microsoft it has become my main driver on my gaming rig, my workstation and my Surface Go 3 - and of course I'm running PowerShell for my automation tasks :)

I really heard a lot about fedora being stable and working, so it's also why I wanted to try it.

irfan, to Nvidia

Accidentally updated my entire system yesterday (instead of just my apps which I normally do for regular updates), which also updated to version 6. The first exp was broken, no doubt, since it defaults to , which isn't great for my GPU (the entire desktop was slow to a crawl, like it's being rendered using my CPU). Even after switching to tho, while that slowness quickly disappeared, I found that there are some widgets I rely on that are broken on Plasma 6, and even my Plank dock wasn't behaving properly (i.e. not identifying existing, open windows).

Thankfully, years ago when I first moved to full time, I had set up to create a system backup every midnight and every pre-update in case an update goes wrong (like in this case). Never had the need for it, and never bothered to test if the backups it made would work fine, until yesterday. Launched the Timeshift app on my desktop (didn't even need a safe/live environment), selected one of the recent backups, click the restore option and it was done in a second and prompted me to restart. Restarted my PC, and I was then back in my perfectly stable system on Plasma 5.27 like nothing happened <3

So please, for system backup purposes - use Timeshift! For personal file (user home directory) backups, use a based backup solution such as (which I also absolutely love). They absolutely will save your ass someday!
