Back in the day, game developers needed to explain and justify each and every file that came with a game. The user was respected as the local system administrator and owner of the computer.
I just received this from eBay USA: "SimCity Classic - Deluxe Edition for Windows". Pretty much the definitive version of SimCity Classic. The Deluxe Edition will install both the official SimCity graphic packs and the Terrain Editor.
i seriously love how much craftsmanship went into Maxis games. in addition to its 200 page tome of a manual, SimLife came with a laboratory notebook to encourage you to do experiments and document them.
you can totally tell this was made so an enterprising science teacher would xerox 30 of these and hand them out to students for lab assignments 😂
Compared to the classic MS-DOS version, SimCity 2000 for Windows 3.1 did have a vastly superior resolution! At least, if you had a huge, badass monitor back in 1994/95!
I just made my 154th contribution to archive.org! Scanned and uploaded the complete German SimLife manual for Amiga and MS-DOS from 1992. Featuring 244 pages, 300dpi quality.
Time to start digitizing a new retro manual. I haven't seen a good pdf version of the German SimLife manual yet, so this might be worth the effort. I will upload this to archive.org as soon as it's done.
I just unpacked an Amiga version of Maxis' SimClassics in mint condition. Everything looks brand new and appears to be perfectly readable. I also got pristine manuals and quick-start guides. A true classic to add to the collection!
#EA and #Maxis really have to clarify is Project René is Sims 5 or not, because it looks more and more like a multiplayer mobile game (it is 100% compatible with mobile after all) and seems to have no build mode, extremely cartoony graphics...
Point is the official Sims community is burning up over this and if it's NOT Sims 5 the studio(s) need to put their foot down before rumors take over completely.
The game gained controversy when it was discovered that designer Jacques Servin inserted an Easter egg that generated shirtless men in Speedo trunks who hugged and kissed each other and appear in great numbers on certain dates, such as Friday the 13th. The egg was caught shortly after release and removed from future copies of the game. He cited his actions as a response to the intolerable working conditions he allegedly suffered at Maxis, particularly working 60-hour weeks and being denied time off. He also reported that he added the “studs”, as he called them, after a heterosexual programmer programmed “bimbo” female characters into the game, and that he wanted to highlight the “implicit heterosexuality” of many games. Although he had initially planned for the characters to appear only occasionally, the random number generator he had created malfunctioned, leading them to appear frequently. Servin was fired as a result, with Maxis reporting that his dismissal was due only to his addition of unauthorized content. This caused a member of AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), a gay AIDS organization, to call for a boycott of all of Maxis’ products, a measure which Servin rejected. Some months later, a group named RTMark announced its existence and claimed responsibility for the Easter egg being inserted into the game, along with 16 other acts of “creative subversion.” Servin stated that he had received a money order of $5,000 from RTMark for the prank. It was revealed later on that Servin was a cofounder of RTMark.
I have to post something though, so here's SimCity Classic. The game that got me into city builders in the first place. I'm old.
Those requirements though. :win3_computer:
