I learned more about templates, which we would call "cookie-cutter" if we were able. Gathering environmental data from the fine folks at the National Weather Service and putting it into a monitoring system next to in-home sensors. With a smidge of shell scripting and a little XML by hand, on and .

Rare opportunity to reply with software!

Thinking about writing up some usage of esoteric/under appreciated operating systems.

  • Please do suggest some that will run on either: a standard amd64 PC or a Raspberry Pi 4. Not interested in virtual machines.

  • Please do not suggest: Windows, macOS, Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora Linux or things based on them (like Kubuntu, or Linux Mint)

Please boost this so I can get lots of good replies.

is a nice classic Unix. Also . is great, but it feels like it's in between the other BSDs and Linux.

Also check out on x86/x86_64. Very neat OS.

Checking out 10 RC6 on Raspberry Pi's, looking at wifi and A/V mainly. More about user testing in a subsequent post.

10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Could do With Nano Editor

OK, you probably do know at least one or two of these, but I’ve added the auto backup, line numbers, mouse support, and scroll bar to an alias for every time I start up nano.

See https://itsfoss.com/nano-tips-tricks/

@danie10

Not a huge fan, as I find that #Vim
is usually much faster for me, but I do use it in a pinch here and there, although I alias nano to #pico ;)

On #NetBSD, at least at #SDF, nano is still the default install from the U of Washington contribs (not pico).

The other half of that equation is #pine (alpine). When running #mutt, I do use nano over that of #vi for authoring my emails.

Thanks for sharing those #ProTip's Danie :)

It was surprisingly easy!
Most of the desktop tools that I use were included as packages.

I used and reused my dotfiles.

My dotfiles were almost enough. Weirdly didn't like the TOML config file format. Had to use YAML.

Fonts, icons, etc have almost the same names as in Arch. Emoji fonts worked! I honestly didn't expect the emoji fonts working lol

The only thing that I miss is . What is the alternative for NetworkManager?

Still going strong at Europe 2024.

And I discovered the Linux kernel has eBPF. Just like NetBSD with lua... 10 years ago? 🤓

@joel

Yeah, funny how THAT works, right?

(A bit old, but...)

I will note that lua support is disabled in by default...

Decided to install on an old RPI I had laying around. I go to look into how involved the process is.. Naturally it's just "image this onto your SD card and boot."

Thanks NetBSD!

Nerd-Advice needed: Lots of software does not work on my old (2011) anymore. Any Idea what to install? Simply ? Or should I try , or ? Or something esoteric like Plan 9? The device in question is not in heavy use, rather a kitchen-computer for simple tasks.

New #NetBSD vulnerability just dropped:

NetBSD Security Advisory 2024-001: Inadequate validation of user-supplied hostname in utmp_update(8)

No CVE or CVSS assigned, but the vulnerability seems pretty minor to my naive evaluation. The interesting thing is that it affects all versions of the OS up to 10.0RC4.

I'll try updating my 9.3 vm and report. :netbsd:

Any NetBSD dev reading this, please feel free to comment before I make a fool of myself. 😊

I managed to mung my RC5 test system and could not reinstall from the last ISO I had because RC1 has rolled off the archives. Downloaded and burned a CD and a DVD with RC5 so I have a better recovery point. Yay

Finally got time to do a clean install of NetBSD10_RC5 on my with an eMMC module.
Previously I had RC1 running for several months.
I have a PCIe M.2 card and a 500gb SSD; hence a breeze to backup key config files from RC1 and then restore once RC5 was up and SSD mounted.
Everything looks great 👍

users: looks like you'll have (optional) extended attribute support soon in NetBSD 10!

But does not support that on NetBSD, a PR would be welcome!

Implementing this might be rather easy, because there is already xattr code for FreeBSD, Linux and macOS.
