I learned more about #Zabbix templates, which we would call "cookie-cutter" if we were able. Gathering environmental data from the fine folks at the National Weather Service and putting it into a monitoring system next to in-home sensors. With a smidge of shell scripting and a little XML by hand, on #NetBSD and #FreeBSD. https://jspath55.blogspot.com/2024/03/weather-or-knot.html
10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Could do With Nano Editor
OK, you probably do know at least one or two of these, but I’ve added the auto backup, line numbers, mouse support, and scroll bar to an alias for every time I start up nano.
Decided to install #NetBSD on an old RPI I had laying around. I go to look into how involved the process is.. Naturally it's just "image this onto your SD card and boot."
Nerd-Advice needed: Lots of software does not work on my old #MacBookPro (2011) anymore. Any Idea what to install? Simply #Debian? Or should I try #freebsd , #openbsd or #netbsd? Or something esoteric like Plan 9? The device in question is not in heavy use, rather a kitchen-computer for simple tasks.
"In retrospect, it seems clear that open source was not so much the goal itself as a means to an end, which is freedom: freedom to fix broken things, freedom from people who thought they could clutch the source code tightly and wield our ignorance of it as a weapon to force us all to pay for and run Windows Vista."
NetBSD Security Advisory 2024-001: Inadequate validation of user-supplied hostname in utmp_update(8)
No CVE or CVSS assigned, but the vulnerability seems pretty minor to my naive evaluation. The interesting thing is that it affects all versions of the OS up to 10.0RC4.
I'll try updating my 9.3 vm and report. :netbsd:
Any NetBSD dev reading this, please feel free to comment before I make a fool of myself. 😊
I managed to mung my #NetBSD RC5 test system and could not reinstall from the last ISO I had because RC1 has rolled off the archives. Downloaded and burned a CD and a DVD with RC5 so I have a better recovery point. Yay #fsck
New #NetBSD BulkTracker release. Packages that failed to build now include a list of failed dependencies (if any) and packages broken by them (if any).
Finally got time to do a clean install of NetBSD10_RC5 on my #RockPro64 with an eMMC module.
Previously I had RC1 running for several months.
I have a PCIe M.2 card and a 500gb SSD; hence a breeze to backup key config files from RC1 and then restore once RC5 was up and SSD mounted.
Everything looks great 👍
Hey there #FPGA hackers! If you want to do open source FPGA development on #NetBSD, now you can! I've just made pkgsrc packages for YosysHQ's icestorm, nextpnr-ice40, and yosys.
