Taking my new (to me) ThinkPad 450 out for its first stroll. Using it while waiting for the car to be serviced. #linuxmint, #firefox, #emacs, all working like a charm. Keyboard and touchpad are almost perfect, battery life is super long. Screen is a little dim but hey. For under $100US I'm not complaining. This is exactly why I got it and set it up with linux, etc. Oh, also doing some journaling with #orgmode and it seems to be syncing to my home computer with #syncthing. Just about perfect!

After listening to @amolith on the @linuxlads I am giving a decent go again: I'll try it for 2 weeks and see where I end up. I wrote in my Bullet Journal once this month, so I can't be worse than that. I am using my folder already set up with between devices, and it seems fine with that.

Obsidian lasted... not long, but I think I was trying to be too rigid with it. So I'll try not to be so much this time.

I have not said it in a while, so I have to say it again:

#Syncthing is a wonderful piece of software. Even with only local connections and all the automatic finding things disabled it works like a charm and I can keep a family's count of devices in sync, get local backups from phones, send MP3 files across devices and sync password manager files that I do not want to see in the cloud.

Thanks, Syncthing!

Installed on my 2 linux machines last night. Seems to be working so far, though I haven't yet figured out exactly how it all works -- what syncs with what, how often, etc. But they can see each other and share.

Next is trying to get it going on my Win10 machine. For some reason, that makes me nervous! But if I can get all 3 synced, and working on all of them, I'll be pretty jazzed.

I remember how nervous I was when (in early 2020) I went to the post office with my 📱 to drop off a 📦 and present the barcode on the phone. (Having previously scp'ed the pdf to the phone to show it in evince).

Would the 🔋 last? Would it overheat? Would the display stack hold? It worked.

Nowadays I don't spend a thought: Fill in the data on my laptop, save the pdf, have it synced automatically via to 's ticket-box folder and show it at the counter. ✅

People love recommending and raving about #Syncthing - it's a really cool project but honestly despite thinking hard about it, I still have not found any use for it (which is a lil frustrating ngl). I think the issue is I'm already used to syncing stuffs through #Git anyway lol and I kinda prefer it since it's a lil more "explicit" or intentional + you could add notes/context to the commit if needed.

I wish the #Odysee sync was faster, but it is what it is eh…

I just got a notification from @ordinarygamers from my discord server I setup (it’s kind of a mess ngl) and I normally watch his content on Odysee, just wish it was faster although I believe it takes time as per API requests. Takes time to upload to the LBRY network I believe… @lemmy #syncthing #videohosting #Cryptocurrency #lbry #BlockChain #YouTube

Leute, es gibt super #Passwortmanager mit lokaler Datenhaltung wie #KeePassXC, die ihr beispielsweise mit #Syncthing selbst zwischen euren Geräten synchronisieren könnt. 👍

me: okay, setting up with 10+ folders on multiple machines that all sync a slightly different set of folders, or use different paths for some of them, is somewhat of a hassle … let me just write a small tool real quick that I can give a YAML definition of my whole "fleet" of machines and that can generate each machine's config based on that

also me, 2 hours later: [learns that this isn't something to do "real quick"]

I was already inclined to share usage data with because it's open source, but this is the most respectful usage stats popup I've ever seen.

  1. Unambiguously tells you exactly what data it will send
  2. Lets you know it will prompt again if the data set changes
  3. Tells you where to view the aggregated stats for yourself

Well done!

I created my first mobile app in using . It's a very simple app for logging small ideas and to do tasks on my Android phone into simple text files. These are synced w/ to my Laptop. From there, a glue script adds them to my DB. I know, weird workflow. But I wanted to highlight how easy it is to build cross-platform mobile apps in Go now. Dont have to use the Android SDK.

Using on multiple devices and want sync between them? Don't want to upload your vault to some server online, be it Obsidian, Google or whatever? I found to be superb for my use case. One Windows/Linux Workstation, two Linux laptops, Android smartphone. All syncing well over my local network.

I've been fiddling a bit to make discovery over work in a local network with multicast routing. Interesting experiment, and I think Syncthing needs to make the hop limit configurable so it can work work without firewall hacks. :blobcat_mlem: Blog post: https://airtower.wordpress.com/2024/01/12/ipv6-multicast-routing-for-syncthing-discovery/

Hey , any recommendations about a self-hostable open source photo sync solution with Android App support?

I am currently using NextCloud, but am curious to try out alternatives. NextCloud does many things and appears a bit of a bloat for the reason(s) I am using it.

Maybe just set up a server? Or ? Or plain rsync in ?

Main goal is to have backups of the photos taken automatically. Doesn't require a fancy UI.
