For those whose computers won’t let them use , please do consider blocking advertisers earlier than inside the browser. Try this hosts file, or better: set these to block on your internet router’s firewall.

You can have my ad blocker of choice when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers. But yesterday I found two more plug-ins that make YouTube tolerable again.

  1. SponsorBlock uses crowd-sourced information on videos that skips over sponsor segments so you don't get annoying "..and talking of bad segues, here's a product!..." bits in the middle of otherwise-interesting broadcasts.

  2. DeArrow removes clickbait on Youtube titles and thumbnails, again by crowd-sourcing.

I've wondered and maybe someone can tell me, instead of built into programs why not have an ad-drainer? When you block the ad you tip off the source that you are blocking, but instead just read the ad stream and discard it instead of displaying it. The source will not know. Seems easy so am I missing something?

Nothing warms my heart more than another website picking up the idea "Detect Missing Ad-blocker" of https://stefanbohacek.com/project/detect-missing-adblocker-wordpress-plugin/ (after seeing it on mine in action).

#adblock

It's made for WordPress but the idea is so dead simple that it can be integrated in almost anything with some work (if nobody else did that work already :D)

@macdonst @bekopharm This is great! I added a link to your blog to https://stefanbohacek.com/project/detect-missing-adblocker-wordpress-plugin/#other-implementations.

Thank you for putting this together!

This guy made a tool that beeps every time a website sends data about you to Google. The beeps blur into a continuous buzz: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/tracker-beeper/

I use Privacy Badger (https://privacybadger.org/, blocks trackers), uBlock Origin (https://ublockorigin.com/, adblocker), Firefox, and the SearXNG search engine (https://searxng.ca/ or find instances at https://searx.space/), but it's annoying I have to.

A video of navigating various popular news sites (Daily Mail, nu.nl, telegraaf.nl) in Chrome. A terminal is visible in the background, running a program that beeps ever time the site reports back to Google.

Youtube and it war with its users continues. And they say it is all about protecting creators. Sounds fishy to me and probably painful.

No, so far, I have mostly gotten by.

Invidious will go down for a while
Or I will briefly have buffering problems

But nothing effective yet.

This explains why using an AdBlocker is more than just keeping annoying advertisements from popping up. There's serious privacy concern.

I use very rarely, and only with / clicker running in strict mode.

Today I went and looked at the few non-personal groups and pages that I was following and tried to add them as RSS feeds to my RSS reader...and you know what...I was 100% successful with that. Bit of a surprise.

Then I de-followed/de-liked any of those pages, since I don't want them to count me among the people who use the dying facebook platform to reach them.

@BeAware it even cuts out sponsored segments inside videos, that's the part that stopped working.

Well, #Qwant, the "privacy focused" French search engine is not only proprietary but now is forcing the user to show ads and disable their ad blocker.

Anyone have any alternative search-engine suggestion apart from duckduckgo (which is practically Bing), and Searx instances?

@Mehrad first one would be nice and open source.

@gacha I 100% agree. If something is publicly funded, it should doubtlessly be FLOSS. Ethics dictates: Public money should produce public license code that is publicly available.
